We rented a bike in the center of Portoroz and reached the national park in half an hour at a comfortable pace. It is the largest Slovenian salt evaporation pond, one of the few where salt is still produced in a traditional way. The saltworks have been active since the 13th century. It's also a wetland and a breeding place for waterbirds. In the museum, the traditional method of making salt is presented in detail, and in the gift shop, local products can be purchased at much more favorable prices than in Portoroz.

We really enjoyed visiting here. The visit is very informative and easy to navigate on foot. You could hire bikes but we couldn’t find the location (even with a map) where to obtain them. The shop had a great selection of products to buy too. We would recommend this place to visit.

We stopped here on our drive from Piran, taking the paved lane that runs along the canal to the northwest. After parking at one of the fishing boat areas, we walked up a private lane to get an overview of the 40 acre salt pans which extend to the 1,600 acre nature park.
On the return back to Koper, we took the rural vineyard highway that begins at the Croatian border. All very picturesque.

Nothing much to see - you can just walk around, visit store, have a drink and check one exhibition. Museum on the other side is sadly closed and visiting spa is not possible by foot, just by booking and transport... could be more.

I intended to photograph the place at sunset. Its website says it would close at 7 PM. The sunset was at 6PM. I got there at 5 PM and figured I would have plenty of time to walk around. A lady at the ticket window pointed to a hand-written note on the window saying it closed at 5 in "winter". First, it's not winter yet. It changed the closing hour without changing it on its website. Even my hotel concierge thought the closing hour was 7 PM. That's just not cool.

This is one of my favourite places near the seaside. You can see tha past aond the future here. It is quiet and you learn really a lot. The open air museum is really amazing. And you can also buy salt of a great quality and good price.

We were on a tour to Piran and with your good reviews, our guide kindly added this stop upon my request. However, because of his limited English explaining the rainy May they experienced, we were very disappointed that there was no salt in sight while the disinterested ticket lady still wanted us to pay 7 Euros each for a long walk to a building in the distance. The salt available for sale was in big bags and we left empty-handed. My advice is to check with the Slovenian Information centers first before going there. We went with my 88-year old in-law not teens.

These enormous salt pans begin several kilometres south of Portoroz and are within walking distance by a minor road which goes uphill and down again from near the bus station. There are two entrances. At the first you pay 7 euros entrance fee. This is a working saltpan and rather disappointing for birds- just a few gulls, terns and stilts. Exiting the first entrance there is a cycle track alongside the pans to the second entrance a good 5 kilometres or more- keep your entrance ticket. This leads to the customs checkpoint before Croatia where you will asked for your passport or ID. The second entrance is actually in no- mans land between the two checkpoints! This area is called Fontanigge and is a nice wetland - quieter, more scenic and better for birds including various waders and bee- eaters. Unfortunately I did not have much time as it is a long walk back. I did it all in a day but it is a good hike. You could cycle if you can manage the hill at the start.

I cycled here enroute from Porec to Koper. Just over the boarder into Slovenia. Entrance fee then boardwalks over the salt flats. Makes an interesting stop, large area

It's a very peaceful place, with large escapes, water basins and birds. The history of the place is very interesting as well as its importance for the history of Venice and of locals. The mines of the white gold are maybe not so important today but they were a solid part of the Venice development.
There is also a shop with various products based on salt and a spa.

We're going to Piran . . . did you go from Piran to the Nature Park? We'd like to take a boat ride to the Park? How do we do that?
