This is one of the best museums I have visited; it is extremely well designed with museum going down a gentle slope, with gardens along the way. It has been designed in a very unique way. The exhibits are also very interesting, the huge size stone sculptures from this area, in excellent condition. Definitely worth going out of your way to visit

First thing you see as you walk in is a giant stone Olmec head and off to the side of that was a beautiful jade mask that had recently been repatriated back to Mexico from New York. It just got better from there. I couldn’t believe how much they had there and that the pieces were in such perfect shape too. If you don’t read Spanish you likely will miss a lot of information but I did see that English only tourists were able to get an audio guide & headphones. Even without being able to read all the descriptions though I think it’s well worth a visit. Also try to get there early in the afternoon (by 1:00) or in the morning or you might feel rushed to see everything because there are a lot of rooms filled with a variety of things that you’ll want to take your time to see. I’ve been to the anthropological museum in CDMX and this museum really rivals that one.

We spent a few hours looking at the mainly Olmec collection. There are I think 8 colosal Olmec heads. And many statues, pottery, jade pieces, masks, and stelae. Not much signage in English.

Fabulous archeological exhibits from the people of Mexico. Don’t miss this museum! It’s astounding! Plan to spend several hours here if you’d like to see it all. There’s a nice dining terrace and small area for lunch or snacks. And don’t forget to walk through the gardens.

An hour and a half drive from Veracruz, this museum is considered the second most important anthropological museum of Mexico, with good reason. Not only beautiful in design (a long, marble clad structure that extends in steps down a hillside with garden displays at each descending level) the unique collection begins with the Olmec civilization--the "founding" culture of Mexico--and explores subsequent cultures in the greater region that encompasses Veracruz with beautifully displayed objects, many not likely to be found anywhere else.

This museum is spectacular; the collection of artefacts of all the neighbouring ancient civilisations is incredible. So is the architecture of this museum: from the outside it almost looks austere. When you walk inside, it opens up to splendid galleries that offer the best perspective on the artefacts on display.
You absolutely have to visit this museum!

We took the bus from Veracruz but a taxi back. This is an incredible museum for artifact buffs and of course they have the giant Olmec heads. The thing I learned is that the Olmecs had some really great artists. The faces on most of the sculptures are so well done and really show personalities. The Olmecs were before the Aztecs and Maya but better sculpturers imho. And the museum is just the right size. Not too big and not too small.

This is a beautiful museum, with the best displays anywhere of artifacts from the ancient civilizations of this region. If you're not going in on a guided tour, pay 55 pesos to rent their ipod with a wonderful guide app preloaded. (You can also download it ahead of time for free, iPhone only so far.)
A note on the app: it uses QR codes placed on many exhibits. You just point the ipod camera at it and the narration begins. Easiest system ever!
There is a small cafeteria; the nice lady behind the counter makes an excellent torts de Pollo (chicken sandwich)! It is a tiny menu, but each item is made fresh, so take your time.
Restrooms are located only in the front of the building; you may well find yourself walking back there at some point in your tour.
Go be fascinated.

The cost of admission is very low (50 pesos) despite the quantity and quality of the remarkable ancient artefacts housed in this museum which in turn is set within a large and very pleasant garden. There are usually very few people there, allowing you time to really admire the artefacts. There is logic as to how the exhibits are displayed, essentially you are taking a walk through time. The exhibits are all well labelled with brief details, but are all in Spanish (however English audio guides are available at reception), which severely tested my limited vocabulary!
It is spacious, clean, tidy and well lit. Staff are friendly and helpful.
There is a gift shop and a coffee shop upstairs for refreshments.

The only potential drawback, is that once again, as with many places in México, parking is at a premium, but taxis are relatively inexpensive here and would perhaps be a better option to take. All in all, this is a must see while in Xalapa. If it's good enough for Prince Charles to visit then it is good enough for me!

An absolute must. The have a truly impressive collection, with some of the most important artifacts unearthed in eastern México. The chief attraction would, of course, have to be the Olmec heads, but there are many other stunning pieces as well. The museum is very well laid out, amidst a lovely park) with sensible curation (signage is in Spanish, but they had audio tours available). It is also a sensible size, and can be thoroughly covered in half a day without flattening your feet. Admission for adults is 55 pesos. Also a very good bookstore.
