    Quiet canyon hike
This was the least traveled of all the trails that we visited in Banff and Jasper National Parks. It was an easy walk along the Bow River on a paved trail. At the end of the paved trail, there is the canyon trail hike. The canyon is a smaller version of Johnston Canyon but without a single person in sight. We enjoyed the solitude and beauty of this canyon.

    Great morning walk
Easy hike. The first part of the hike has no views; you're basically walking on the road. After that, it opens up to beautiful views of the river/lake. Spotted a few chipmunks along the way. After the lake, continue on a while and you'll reach the canyon. There's a short section where you need to find the way around the boulders which was fun, and then there'll be a loop trail which has some views.

    Great Trail, No Crowds
Wonderful hike to a lovely waterfall. Very close to the main area in Banff, yet without the crowds. Highly recommend. You can also bike there, but you should have a lock to lock your bike after the bike trail ends. We do not recommend going in the cave at the beginning of the trail unless you have your park pass that gets you in free of charge.

You can park at the Cave and Basin Historical site(lots of parking) form which begins the trailhead to the Sundance Canyon loop. You follow a paved pathway for most of the way up until you reach the Canyon itself --from there it is gravel/silt path with a slight increase in elevation.
At the start of the Canyon you will find outhouses, a few picnic tables and bike racks(to lock up your bike as you ascend the Canyon portion of the hike).
The hike to the Canyon, as well as the Canyon loop itself, is very scenic and picturesque. So do not forget to take a camera. We could not nail down an exact distance (one source said 2.7 miles) but the hike took us around 3 hours -- and we did stop a lot to take pictures.

This hike requires a bit of a hike along a paved path just to get to. It takes the better part of an hour to walk from the parking lot to the trail head but well worth the time. This trail winds through a deep canyon with a fast moving stream running most of the way through it. The views are outstanding and ever changing as you wander up snd down through the canyon. The walk to the trail head is longer than the hike through the canyon but dont let that stop you from enjoying this beautiful area.

I was here this past winter, and most of the trail was ok with regular winter boots until I got up to the Canyon. I managed to cling onto the railing of the REALLY icy steps going up to the bridge, but I would have felt a LOT safer with heavy duty crampons. In any case, I made it all the way through! It was stunning.

We got to Banff on a Friday in the early afternoon - and after checking into our hotel, we walked down Banff Avenue to the Bow River Bridge and decided to try the Sundance Canyon trail. This route, along the Bow River a good portion of the way is a paved road, really and hikers and bikers share the road with horseback riders. After about 2 miles, the paved portion of the trail ends with a little turnout for parking bikes or strollers and then a short path to a rustic bridge next over a stream/small falls. Many people turn back at this point, but the trail continues, unpaved and much more narrow, climbing over the rocks and continues by the stream and then looping back down to the turnout for bikes, etc. If you want, you can turn off for the short Marsh walk on the way back down the trail.

The whole hike is maybe 4 or 5 miles. It's mostly easy, though there are a few steps of steepish rocky trail above the falls. Wear sturdy shoes - at least tennis shoes.
It was a great short walk/hike to start our Banff exploration.

A 4+ km, relatively flat walk or bike ride from the Caves and Basin Historic Site. Not many people were undertakimg this activity, probably due to the effort to get there, the mosquitoes (v friendly) and possibly because the canyon itself is nice enough but certainly not spectacular. If you decide to visit the canyon, also make sure you appreciate the vistas of the Bow River and valley along the way. There are no facilities at the canyon but also very few people. The climb to the top is steep and tricky but very do-able with a bit of care. There is a nice little bridge across the top of the canyon that gives a pleasant view of the canyon itself.

Really relaxing and scenic walk, first hour or so on concrete but next to the beautiful, cristal blue Bow river! Tons of Mosquitoes, so definitely bring Bug spray

I wish we had bikes! Most of the path there is paved and not especially scenic, and we kept getting passed by bikes. There are some lovely views, eventually, of the river and of course, the canyon, but a lot of it is just a paved path through trees with clouds of mosquitoes. On the inside of the paved path is a muddy muck of horse tracks and manure. The canyon hike was beautiful, but my kids were bummed once we completed that loop and then had to go all the way back down the paved path. We tried the Marsh Trail on the way back for variety, but it was nearly impassable with horse manure and muddy tracks.
