- johnnnitaNapa, California2,470 contributionsDRIVING ON THE ICEFIELDS PKWY FROM EDMONTON AIRPORTOur drive initially was from Calgary Intl airport to Jasper our first day visiting the Canadian Rockies. Truth be told, there's way too much to stop and see along the way. So, it's better to spend time in both Banff and Jasper and take it all in with small group tours. THAT'S WHAT WE DID. That way, we could just take our time, enjoy the ride, and reach our initial destination in Jasper in reasonable time. We still were able to take in the beautiful lakes, streams, mountain ranges as we drove north. Luckily on this day (as well as all the rest) the skies were clear, the air was crisp, and a great start to our trip. We only stopped once for gas. Still, it was a great introduction to our Canadian Rockies road trip.Visited October 2022Written December 11, 2022
- Ken B5 contributionsIcefield Parkway HighlightsThe whole day was filled with new sights and sounds. After my wife and I boarded the Brewster's coach, Rob our excellent Tour Guide gave us a rundown of what we would be seeing during the day. He continued to highlight points of interest along the way. Brian our coach captain even squeezed in a few side trips to points of interest not originally listed in the itinerary. The lunch when we arrived at the glazier was delicious with plenty of food options. The Skywalk was a sight to behold hanging out over the canyon. We even saw some goats down below us. Next onto the Ice Explorer and up the glacier. What magic machines these vehicles are. The weather was very sunny with little wind, perfect for our visit. After re-boarding our coach we continued onwards to our arrange accommodation. I honestly could not find anything to complain about.Visited May 2023Written June 3, 2023

We got a clear day blue sky and early morning set off from Banff to cover Icefield Parkway till Athabasca Falls . Bow Lake, Peyto lake were stunning including Parkers ridge and Athabasca Glacier . Ideally one should stay a couple of nights at Jasper to make it more relaxing . Stunning views and pictures and memories of a lifetime .Visited May 2023Written June 5, 2023

- TennisStar602New Jersey611 contributionsI drove almost this entire road except for the last eleven (11) miles. The views were out of a movie.Nearly all of the significant attractions of Banff National Park and Jasper National Park were off of the Icefields Parkway. In order to take a drive on this road, individuals had to purchase a cheap park pass for access. Both national parks were covered under the park pass. The money spent to ride this road was definitely worth the cost. I almost drove the entire road from Lake Louise to Jasper, but I had to avoid the last eleven (11) miles insofar as I needed to make my reservation at the Columbia Icefield! While this road was very long and time-consuming, I would definitely encourage people to take their time with the drives. The scenery could only be described as breathtaking, so I made many stops, and I took many small hikes.Visited July 2023Travelled soloWritten July 13, 2023

We started at Lake Louise at spent 2 days on the road stopping off at Crowsfoot Glacier, Bow Lake, Peyto Lake, Waterfowl Lakes, Mistaya Canyon on the way through to our overnight at Rampart Creek Campground. Day 2 we took in the Weeping Wall, The Big Bend, Columbia Icefields, Goats & Glacier View and Athabasca Falls before arriving in Jasper. Everyone should experience this road at least once in their lifetime!Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten August 19, 2023

The informative signage was quite sobering showing the fast retreat of this once magnificent glacier. You can park quite close to the face of the glacier and walk to get great views, even though some of it is covered in dirt at the sides which isn't immediately obvious. Afterwards, go to the Chalet for a hot chocolate and a warming home made soup. This is a really beautiful drive through the Canadian Rockies. However, every viewpoint along the way is very crowded with visitors, even in September. There are lots of places to stop along the parkway to enjoy a quick view of a waterfall or a glacier. I would recommend picking one hike that allows one to get away from the crowded lookout points.

The Parkway encompasses a lot, overviews, trails, pullouts, the ice centre, glaciers and tourist spots. As a whole it is an experience that should not be rushed. Take it as it comes, with a plan because there are so many stops and "distractions" that you may not see all you like if you don't plan.

This was the 3rd time for us on the parkway, the first in 8 yrs. Besides some interesting waysides we enjoyed Athabasca and Sunwapta Falls, Athabasca Glacier, and Peyto Lookout in the day long drive through the parkway. You never tire of the raw beauty and it was noticeable how much the glacier had melted back in 8 yrs. This is a must see for nature lovers if anywhere near this area. I do look forward to a return visit in the future. It was amazing how many people were visiting in mid Sept, it felt like summer! The scenery is awesome with countless photographic opportunities.

I strongly recommend doing this drive for the beauty of the drive itself but also as a means to getting to beautiful Jasper National Park. We stopped at the stops recommend to us: Bow Lake-beautiful; Columbia Icefield-meh; Glacier Skywalk-cool; Peyto Lake Viewpoint-so stunning but we did not hike to the summit. Too strenuous looking for us; Sadly missed Sunwapta and Athbasca Falls-somehow missed signs for these falls on our way to Jasper.
We expected to see wildlife but saw none. Make sure you have a full tank of gas and some snacks before doing the drive.

No, you don't need a pass to drive on the Icefields Parkway. I would suggest you take your time and enjoy the evolving and grand scenery. Also, make sure you are properly gassed up (if using traditional car). Gas stations get to be few and far between unless you are in the major towns.

Hi Planning a two week trip in BC and Alberta. I've been reading Q&A on the Icefields Parkway. We had planned spending 3 days to explore all the main attractions between Banff and Lake Louise is that too much? We are not avid hikers but will take time to do the shorter ones or walk to the main obervation points.
Also would it be strategic to sleep these 3 nights in Lake louise and go back and forth every day to different attractions?
Thank !!

It is nice to see that you want to take the Icefields parkway. But you should make sure you check the daily forecast. In winter the parkway can be shut down at any time. I think the best thing to do is consult with the accommodations at Lake Louise because they are more up to date on what is open. Some of the sites are not open in the winter. Make sure you have lots of fuel as there is very limited services. Once you get past Saskatchewan Crossing there is nothing until you get to Jasper.
I hope this helps

Hello
Apologise if this has been covered already but we are planning to drive from Lake Louise to Jasper via the icefield parkway. We are stopping at lake Louise the night before and will have a car with us and it will be in July.
I was just wondering if people would recommend driving the icefield parkway in a day or to take our time and do it in 2? If you recommend 2 days do you know where the best places to stop on route would be?
Thanks very much
Sarah

If you like to hike a lot and are an avid photographer then plan on two days and you can stay at the lodge located about mid way on the ice fields at the glacier welcome center. That said we did it without any problem in a day and stopped several times including taking the trip to the glacier. The days are very long when you are going ( 15 hrs of daylight+).
Planning to travel from Calgary through Banff and Jasper parks in a 40' RV. Any road concerns for a vehicle of this size? Also, are their parking areas that would accommodate our size?

We did the journey on a coach and did see lots of places where you could park a large RV. Unsure of the cost however, the whole setup within the National Parks are incredible so I’m sure you guys will have no issues.

Is it worth it to do part of the parkway and make it a one day trip from Banff and back instead of staying in Jasper overnight? Thanks in advance!

HI dipban, well the Icefields parkway is a long road. we stayed at bow lake in num ti lodge which was great. it is about 30km. north of lake louise. I went in late July and it was amazing. there is also a cut little hotel in the parking lot at Saskatchewan crossing about 30 km north of bow lake. I hope that helps, Regards David.

Hi,
We will be in Banff from Oct 11 to 16, and I see there are many tours offer including Icefields parkway.
do you recommend self-drive or go with tour company?
Thank you so much.

The Parkway is best solo. Enjoy it.
Time arrival at visitor center for Columbia Icefields in early morning as crowds usually are present from 11:00 onward. You are outside prime season so may not be too bad.
There are numerous hiking trails off parkway so you can spend as much time there as you want hiking and exploring. Remember bear spray. We saw 2 on our drive along roadway.
I’d book my tickets online with time slot for sky-deck and Icefield visit. The solo drive up is nothing now as Icefield has receded where parking lot is.
It was nice to take the snow vehicle right up on Icefield and get out with time to walk and obtain water from run off. They then shuttle you to sky deck as there is no public parking. You are allowed self guided tour here or we had free tour guide at our visit (August).
Hope this helps. Just plan accordingly before going. Only one gas station along parkway from Banff. Ensure you are full before as the price is + 25 cents/litre.
Any other Q’s do not hesitate.

Can you drive the parkway from Banff and back in one day or should we stay in Jasper for one night? How many days do recommend to see Banfff and Yoho National Parks? We are not hikers.

HI I hope you can get this answer while your in Canada. Me and my friend landed in Calgary, slept over then drove to Canmore which is a gorgeous small town 25 minutes from Banff. We stocked up on any munchies we might need and also any medication, there isn't a lot on the Icefields Parkway other than Banff and Lake Louise town. We then drove up to Bow Lake and Stayed at the Num-Ti-Jah Lodge, this was a great location with a lake glacier and waterfall as a backdrop for breakfast. From here we drove to Saskatchewan Crossing about 40 minutes north. There is a gas station and restaurant here plus you can buy bear spray $70, expensive. Very close to here is route 11, maybe 3 minutes away. If you want a very nice walk with a little hiking go to Kootenay Ecological Reserve which has Siflfeur Falls. It is not touristy and you will have a real feel of wilderness without walking to far. Driving all the way to Jasper is fine but I would stay up there for a couple of days because it is separate from Banff and Lake Louise. It is such an amazing place, find a quiet place near a lake and relax. You can't see everything in one trip. I'm definitely going back.

We will be arriving at The Banff area on 1 September and I’ve just discovered that the whole of the Peyto Lake day use car park, trails and Bow Summit are going to be closed from the 19th August for upgrading work. This trip has been 2 years in the planning and we’re coming from England and to find out at this stage that one of the things we were most looking forward to is not going to be possible is incredibly disappointing. Is it possible to see Peyto Lake from any other viewpoint or can you still get to it without using the car park?

I would seriously consider doing some scenic flights over the region. Wife and I did the road trip towards the end of Aug 2019. Didn't know they were planning to close the parkway Get up in the air and see it all unobstructed :)

We're driving from Lake Louise to Jasper, along the Icefields Parkway of course. We will stay in Jasper for 2 nights, and then take the parkway back down to Lake Louise. We don't like to cram too many things in on a long drive. I'm wondering if the stops going up are different than on the return trip?
Is there a map of the best stops along the way in both directions and where can I get it? What are the "must-do" stops if time is limited?
Is there any stop where we can at least "step" on a glacier without doing the explorer tour. Family of 3. It's a little over our budget :(
Finally, is the skywalk a "must-do"? Thanks for your answers!

I would recommend you get a icefields parkway map from your hotel before you take the drive. We did the drive twice as well. And stopped at some stops on the way up (Herbert Lake, Bow lake, Peyton Lake and then did the Wilcox hike for an hour, then the ice field explorer); then other stops on the way down (athabaska Falls, Sunwapta Falls, did the Parkers’ Ridge hike 2 hours and saw Saskatchewan Glacier).
The ice explorer thing is a bit overrated so definitely not worth the money and there is a long wait. The skywalk did nothing to me but my kids enjoyed the thrill of walking on the glass bridge. So up to you.
Hope this helps, have fun!
