My wife and I rode the Legacy Trail yesterday from Canmore to Banff and back -- total round trip distance of 33 miles and elevation gain (and loss) of 1,043 feet. It was an easy, pleasant ride, with the exception of the bike racing packs that take over more than half the trail when they pass in the other direction. Either they need to learn to be courteous or bike racing packs should be banned.

this is a very popular and very well maintained bike, rollerblade, roller ski, running trail between the Canmore Nordic Centre all the way to the 1A turnoff just west of Banff. We have cycled the stretch many times using different starting points in Canmore and stopping for a bite and a stretch at various spots but our favourite for a light lunch is at the Cascade Ponds day use area. Along the way we have seen all sorts of wildlife including having a whole large herd of elk come and visit us at lunch at the Ponds. It's a good ride with some good hills so it becomes a good workout. Some parts are further from the TransCanada Highway but still has traffic noise AND you are right next to the rail tracks too.
However, because it is so popular we have found that the westerly direction gets very busy by 11am but it's quite different if you get going a bit earlier.

Saw all ages & abilities on the trail. Best order is Canmore to Banff and then back. Somewhat noisy being near the highway, however the views and enjoyment of the experience are still worth it. Parking was full at the Canmore Visitor Centre so we grabbed a spot just down the road.

Scenic and enjoyable ride but go early as it can get busy especially on weekends and parking is limited at the Canmore Visitor Centre. As the trail follows beside the highway, the traffic noise is high and can deter from the full enjoyment. Its fun for families but the Peloton bike racers are a nuisance with their high speed so always ensure to keep to the right to be safe.

We were visiting Canmore from the US and decided to rent mountain bikes to ride to Banff. Two adults + a 13 & 11 year old. Shortly after leaving Canmore we encountered a very aggressive cyclist who was screaming profanities at everyone he passed on the trail for being too slow or not moving over enough to the side to let him pass. He yelled at my 11 year old and then two older women who were walking their bikes up a steep hill. He was going well above the posted speed limits and was frankly a little unhinged. Maybe it was a bad luck of timing on our part, but just a warning for the casual cyclist— this trail is not for the faint of heart. Beware of the Tour de France wannabes who think they own the trail!

Did this bike ride with my boyfriend and we both LOVED it. We rode to Banff and back! For sure will do it again, very beautiful.
On the way to Banff it’s a bit challenging and the head wind, but heading back to Canmore it’s a breeze!

It’s a beautiful trail but really where is bike etiquette. There are so many uncaring cyclists that stop on the middle of the trail take pictures ride side by side. Get this you are not the only one on the trail. Move over ring your bell be safe. There are tons of accidents on this trail every year. Enjoy it ride it but please please be safe and considerate. Locals are afraid or don’t ride it due to the stupidity of others

A fairly easy ride between Canmore and Banff. We took a 9 year old through to a 61 year old. No rush and everyone on the trail is polite and goes their own pace. All told it ends up about 43+ Kms but it is lovely

We enjoyed the ride from Banff to Canmore and back on a beautiful, warm fall day. It parallels the highway so there is traffic noise, but it doesn't ruin the ride. It's just nice being on a trail where you don't have to worry about high speed vehicles passing. We found the majority of other cyclists we met to be very courteous. The views of the mountains along the way are beautiful! As an old road geek, I wondered if this trail followed the old highway alignment. Turns out that part of it does as we found an old stone highway mileage marker at 6 miles out of Banff. I'm assuming it was miles since Canada used miles instead of kilometers up until 1970 and this marker was much older than that.

This trail is awesome. It's well paved and you can easily pedal along at your own pace. Sure you'll run into the occasional peleton of other cyclists or the random rocket bike trying to set records for the trip but my wife and I with our kids in tow in their trailers really enjoyed the ride. It's 22 Km+ to get from one town to the next so be prepared. Also if you can ride it from Canmore to Banff and back and not the other way round. It's uphill from Canmore to Banff so it's best to do that part first then coast back downhill. We did it the other way and had to ride back with bellies full of pizza. We did manage to catch a great sight of a bald eagle landing on its nest where its mate was waiting. I wish I had had a proper camera. Ride slowly and look up. That's the reason you're on this trail.

In Canmore you can rent bikes from Rebound, Outside, Sports Experts to mention a few. In Banff, Banff Bike Rentals, Soul l Ski & Bike, Snow Tips to name a few. Many other choices.

Is there anywhere along the trail to stop for a picnic lunch?
Written September 2, 2018
There is an excellent picnic site about the mid-way point with great views of Rundle Mountain.

What do you do with your bike once you make it to Banff from Canmore? Are there racks set up to park and lock your bike if you want to do some hiking in Banff once you get there?
Written June 11, 2018
There are racks in Banff to lock your bike to, but make sure you do that on the main street because there are a lot of bike thefts.

Do buses run from Banff all day to take you back to Canmore?
Written May 21, 2018
Yes for the most part - the Roam buses. Google search "Roam buses banff Canmore". It only costs $2 one way fare

Can you walk / hike this trail, or is it only for cycling?
Written January 28, 2018
You can walk the trail, though there are some rude cyclists who inexplicably ride side by side.
Written January 3, 2019
No the grade is actually very easy there are a couple of hills but they are of the short steep variety. The trail was made for the average cyclist
Written May 17, 2017
No, it is not and not recommended as plows will push snow from the road onto the trail, sometimes from above.
