Mark was great with finding me a terrific photographer (Nick Fitzhardinge) for the days that I was staying in Banff. Mark was patient, professional and very informative with all my questions. He is very knowledgeable with location scouting and knows how to set up a worthwhile tour. As for my actual guide, Nick did not come to the tour with his own camera, nor was he shooting his own content at the same time as the one on one lesson. I cannot say how important that was to me and it merits a lot of respect for his ability and professionalism to only focus on me and my learning. I would highly recommend rocky mountain photo adventures to everyone and anyone who wants to take advantage of their time in banff by photographing it in all of its beauty with a trusted company who will get you to the locations at the right times. Thanks so much for everything Mark!

I'm so glad you enjoyed your session with our photographer Nick! I make sure all our guides are not taking their own photo's as we feel it is very important to focus on our guest's learning experience. We appreciate your comments!

Had a great full day of shooting iconic locations while in the Banff area with Mark Unrau. He knows the area well and knows photography. He helped me with composition, technique and he freely shared his experiences and knowledge with me. I highly recommend RMPA if you are looking to shoot beautiful landscapes and improve your skills! Mark is a great communicator, easy to talk to and very personable.

Mark is a superstar photographer. I’ve been shooting for 20 years and I thought I knew most of the technical knowledge but Mark helped me both on technical side and creative side. I learned a lot in the 3 days with him and highly recommend the tour for anyone looking to grow as a photographer and get great images of Banff.

Mark was so awesome! He really took the time to explain how certain compositions worked and why certain angles make better "eye appeal" photos. I enjoyed that he took the time to really show me why certain things worked better so that I can take this information on my own and capture stunning landscape photos myself. He is super outgoing and laid back that it was like talking to an old friend.

I did the Banff winter photography tour and Mark picked me up from the Canmore condo I was staying at. Dress warm!! Mark is a passionate photographer which showed through in his tour. His attention to detail and love of sharing his craft were inspirational, and he opened my eyes to the level of preparation required in scene composition and also to the many tweaks required to get the camera to mimic what your eye sees. Thank you so much for a fab (but chilly!) tour.

I chose the Banff at First Light session and loved it. Mark was very informative and knowledgeable and I learned a great deal about my camera and composition. He was more than willing to answer any of my questions and his instructions were easy to follow. I highly recommend taking a session with them.

I had the best 4-hour photo instructional with Mark. Banff is beyond beautiful & the tour with Rocky Mtn Adventures allowed me to see spots I probably would not have seen. Mark's expertise & directive with my camera is allowing me to look thru my lense in a more thoughtful way. Still so thrilled that I walked away from the 4 hour tour w/ captures of the magic of Banff & I can actually even take the photo credit!:)
So great to connect with a professional photographer who values and can teach the fundamentals of capturing such beauty. Extremely worthwhile to book thru Rocky Mtn Photo Adventure...I am already looking forward to doing another photography venture with Mark & team in the near future! Thanks again for everything, Mark - you rock!

My sister and I went out with Mark Unrau last week and my plan was to just go along for the ride, shoot a few pictures and enjoy the morning. I have a fairly nice camera and was happy just shooting in "Auto". Mark spent as much time with me as my photographer sister and showed me all of the things my camera was capable of doing. Now I am looking at photography from a whole new viewpoint. Thanks Mark for the great morning!

If you’re into photography and looking for a way to boost your landscape photography skills, or walk away from the mountains with an amazing image, a day with Mark is the way to go. He is incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about photography, and I left the session with a greater understanding (and appreciation for) landscape photography. We covered just about every topic imaginable, from basics to advanced techniques and even fit in some post-processing.

My wife surprised me with a personal photography session with Mark this past Saturday, as a birthday present and to encourage my interest in photography. It was a fantastic idea and I really enjoyed the 1/2 day session. From composing interesting and artful scenes with proper exposure to processing my images in Photoshop, we covered much more than I thought we would. At no point was it overwhelming or too much to take in though. Mark was excellent in explaining the hows and whys and made sure I was comfortable with the details. We finished up with several great shots, but more than that I learned a great deal to take with me every time I go out shooting.
I'd highly recommend Mark and Rocky Mountain Photo Adventures for anyone wanting to learn more about photography and/or capturing the best shots they can in the mountains. Wonderful experience!

Hi there. My husband & I may be in the Banff area for a few days May 30th-June 2nd. I would really love to go visit places like Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and other beautiful landscape areas but have heard that chances are, they will still be ice-covered and may not even have roads open to Moraine Lake that early. Would it be better for colours etc for photography to come a month or so later?
Written April 17, 2018
Sorry for such a late reply! I was away on a shoot and this message slipped through the cracks. For weather it depends. This year is a late winter so there is a chance that Moraine Lake may still have snow. Everywhere else should be fine. There are not many colours throughout the summer as it is mostly spruce and pine trees here. The best time for colour would be in and around the first couple weeks of September where the aspens turn yellow and the larch trees turn. Hope this helps!

How long is the tour? What time of the day does it typically start? We are planning to visit Banff in last week of July.

How accessible is it for people who have difficulty walking?
Written November 28, 2015
Hello Kergin,
Sorry for getting back to you so late, I have been in Panama on a shoot and had limited internet. All our private guiding are custom made to every persons physical abilities. Our Best of Banff Sunrise Sessions are all fairly accessable. In the Winter the locations are a bit more difficult to get to but walking is no more than a couple hundred meters.
Does that answer your question?
Thanks for asking!
