This is a great hike! It's relatively easy, with a good trail on an easy grade leading to a lovely open Cirque. There's a good amount of parking and adequate pit toilets. There are picnic tables at the trailhead, but they have closed the picnic shelter for COVID. We love this hike in the spring for the wildflowers. For more intrepid hikers, a steep hike beyond the Cirque leads to a great viewpoint of the stunning Lake Minnewanka. On this last visit, we saw lots of wildlife and wildflowers.

We took in this attraction, just off the Lake Minnewanka road -- it is a very scenic hike. You start off from the Upper Bankhead parking lot and wind your way to the top and the Cirque at the base of Mt. Cascade (East side). It is a gentle climb with a good trail. Along the way you will find remnants of coal mining from historic times. Because of the mine tailing you will find little underbrush. At one point you can follow a side path, a short distance, to a FANTASTIC vista that overlooks Lake Minnewanka and you can see as far as Canmore (in the distant horizon) and the corner edge of Banff. This alone is worth the hike and offers some great photos especially for couple/ family photos.
At the top, you are at the base of Mt Cascade and in the bowl shaped cirque where it is pretty flat with lots of trails where people have explored.

Didn't see this one in our guide books but found it in Parks Guide.... turned out to be one of our lovelist hikes in Banff area.
Problem with many in area is that they are too short or too long for us anyway ( preferring 10-12km hikes)

I really don't understand why this hike gets recommended to Banff visitors.

It is a long slog up a very boring trail (we've done a lot of hiking). No views on the way up. You do pass an old concrete building shell, and a few mine pits that have been chain-linked off, but otherwise it is an uphill trail with no variety in scenery. Mining debris is not very interesting.

There IS a scenic spot near the abandoned mines where you can climb out on a coal dump, but it is not a safe area for young children or pets to run around. Otherwise your only view after climbing uphill for 1.5 hr is the top part of a mountain with a rock slide area, where you can look down on some picas running around.

If you are looking for some cardio, with very little Visual Payoff -- then this trail may be for you.

This is a steady climb up to the end of the trail where you are greeted with a view of the carved out mountain side. Although there is an old mining structure, it is not noteworthy.
Once you reach the end of the trail there is a less hiked trail that leads you farther up to the tree line, but be warned, this is a steep steep climb to the top. Hiking sticks will absolutely help you on this part of the hike. The view however is pretty awesome.

We are not strong hikers, but we are relatively fit. Took us 3 hrs for the round trip. We decided to do this trail since we arrived in Banff in the afternoon and just wanted a short warmup for what's coming for the next couple days(plus my friend doesn't want to do any Gondola and such since she wanted to be active). the first 0.8 part of the trail was just pure climbing up the slope, not much to see really. When we are approaching the top and the tree started clearing up a bit, there are some views of mountains far away. The trail ended at the basin, which is impressive, but not impressive enough for the effort we spent to climb up here.

If you're just starting out, like I am, this trail is a lot of fun. I had to push myself at one point and made it to the basin area in 1h10min. Next time I'll do it in an hour, as I stopped to take pictures of the old minding buildings and sink holes.

A friend of mine and I drove out there after my shift finished at 3pm. We were not sure if we had the time to do everything, but we hiked fast, so we were back in 3hrs. Sure, some parts were steep, but the view you get from the top of the top is rewarding on a nice day. The official trail was 4.2km one way with the elevation gain of 455m. We went extra 1.4km and 250m or so higher. Stunning view of Lake Minnewanka & Two Jack Lake.

the hike up was great, with a great view of Lake Minnewanka if you take a very brief detour to the right at the coal mine up onto the old coal slag. But the avalanche run at the end is almost unprecedented. Really great place for lunch after a good hike up.
