This was my second heli-hiking trip with CMH. The first was a few years ago at the Bugaboo Lodge. This year they only opened the Bobbie Burns Lodge for heli-hiking and only to a limited number of guests as Covid protocols were in place.
It certainly did not disappoint! I can recommend this trip to everyone. The lodge is spacious and has recently been updated. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed. The lounge/bar is well set up with large tables and comfortable armchairs. The dining room tables are well spaced following covid protocols, and guests encouraged to dine within their own cohorts. As a cohort of one this was potentially a problem for me, however, a delightful couple quickly invited me to join them, so it was no problem. Missing because of covid was the practice of family dining which is usually the rule in the CMH lodges, but that was understandable in the circumstances. The dining room and bar staff were wonderful, friendly and helpful, and as others have noted, knew me by name after the first day. The food was great and the lunch items fresh and delicious.
Masks were handed out on the first day, and worn throughout the lodge except when eating or drinking. Masks were also required on the helipad and in the helicopter.
The guides were absolutely first rate on every count! I heard nothing but rave reviews from the younger people who did the via ferratas. On the first day we were asked what sort of hiking we would like to do in terms of pace and difficulty. As a senior, I opted for more gentle hiking, and was grouped with people of similar age and ability. For the two full days I was guided by Matt B, and it was a wonderful experience. The pace was great, the views spectacular in spite of a slight smoke haze. We were able to hike up to a high alpine lake, up to a small summit over 8000ft asl, spend time looking at alpine wildflowers, identified with the help of our guide, and walk on a glacier. The second day was capped off with a swim in an alpine lake.
As someone who has done many guided hiking trips, I would say that this one ranks amongst the best. After at least 18 months without being able to go on hiking trips, this was a real tonic!

We can't say enough about our heli-hiking experience at the Bobbie Burns lodge. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. The guides were so incredibly experienced and obviously passionate about the mountains - we felt completely safe in their hands. Due to weather, we couldn't do both FULL Via Ferratas, but we did the best parts of both Mt Nimbus and Conrad Glacier. WOW WOW WOW! I wouldn't hesitate to go back and do it all over again!! Awesome food - they fed us very very well! One of the best beef tenderloins I've had in a long time. Super comfortable room. I already can't wait to go back and I've got a lineup of friends who will join me after seeing my social media posts!

Incredible experience that far exceeded anything that I thought was possible. So if you are looking for an adventure that will top off any other, the Bobbie Burns "heli hiking" will surely do exactly that. CMH really does know how to provide a trip of a lifetime that will want you talking about it and have you coming back!! Organized, professional, safe, friendly, perfect accommodation, outstanding meals, superb staff and the best guides ever!! These guys are truly amazing!
Far beyond "heli hiking", It's truly a mountain adventure and something for everyone.
All I can say, is DO IT!

Booked with a group for the 2023 ski season back in May of 2022 and was very excited to go. Sadly had to bow out due to a medical issue. The company is completely uncompromising about refunds. Spent most of the holidays trying to find a swap but was unsuccessful. Without a swap, they take your entire deposit. What's more frustrating is the rep told me that they plan to give my spot away to someone on the waiting list. So they keep your deposit and then get the full price from someone else. They say I can rebook for later this year but it's not a realistic possibility given the issue. I get paying an inconvenience fee, but if the spot is going to be taken by someone on the waitlist, taking the full deposit is pretty scammy. Won't book with these folks again.

First the good part. The staff were great and made the best of a bad situation. The important part though that you're paying for, the amazing skiing experience didn't happen.
I went on a 5 day Signature trip, from April 2 to 7th and only one of those days, the last 3 hour day was good skiing, with an amount of powder that you could feel. The day before (day 4) we couldn't fly because of low clouds, day 3 was a cram day, where CMH crammed as much vertical as they could in one day. This involved largely skiing the same area, skiing some runs more than once, and in total skiing about 8000m of vertical. Many people tapped out before this point, but if you do that you can't get a refund on that vertical. The skiing on this day had some powder but not much.
Also despite CMH claiming that Galena is 80% trees and 20% Alpine, on this trip it was the other way around, and most of the skiing was done in the alpine. Day 2 was skiing on firm ice crust in flat light like a bad day at an Eastern resort, and day 1 was skiing on breakable ice crust, and was unsafe so we went back to the lodge after only 1000m of vertical.
So far, CMH/Alterra has only offered me a minimal amount of vertical refund for the vertical below the guarantee. They seem to think that everything else about my trip was fine and it's just the weather what can you do? I don't think I got the experience I paid for and it certainly wasn't what's reflected in their marketing materials. If you're going to Galena in April, or December, you're rolling the dice, and if you get bad weather, then you're throwing your money away.

We had a wonderful trip with CMH. We came with our two daughters, ages 12 and 13. One was initially scared of the concept of riding in a helicopter, the other was hesitant about the via ferrata. The staff got both girls to conquer their fears.
We stayed at the Bobbie Burns Lodge which has a lovely relaxed atmosphere with spacious rooms. The rooms had bathrooms with rainforest shower heads along with standard shower heads and they also had a lot of options for charging devices.
The staff members were all very friendly and got to know everyone on a first name basis. Even though we were at separate tables from other clients (due to Covid) there was still ample opportunity to interact with others.
The hikes themselves were fun and adventurous. People could not believe my photos when I got back. We did both the Mount Nimbus and the Conrad Glacier via ferratas. There were often people of mixed abilities on the hikes, but the guides allowed anyone to do any hike of their choosing ie. there was no discrimination based on ability. For example, on the Conrad glacier hike, there were a couple of more tentative hikers, so the guides just modified their route and allowed them to skip certain difficult river crossings.
I loved the fact that all the hiking was one way! We didn't have to retrace our steps once. The helicopter would pick us up at a different point on every occasion.
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip.

Booked this trip to celebrate my 50th birthday and do something out of the box with my son. I'm going to need a thesaurus to describe how extraordinary this trip was. From the moment we were greeted at the bus transfer by the very friendly staff I knew this was going to be a great trip. It had it all, adventure, amazing memories, luxury, and fun! Lodge was wonderful, rooms luxurious, great food, tons of activities in the lodge (basketball, pool, Foosball, games), but the real draw is the spectacular hiking. Your taxi (helicopter) whisks you and other adventurers to unbelievable mountain drop offs as you either hike or climb. The guides (we had Tom and Simon) make safety a priority and push your limits to achieve amazing heights, literally. You can have nice gentle hikes or if more brave tackle the via ferratas. From the moment we arrived the staff knew our names and went above and beyond to make our trip special. If you are even considering CMH then don't delay, book it now! Not many vacations have you coming home feeling like you have changed your life!

Do things you didn't think you could do. Stand on top of the world. Thrill to hanging off the edge of the mountain. Realize that you can do it!. That is what CMH provides.
A beautiful environment so Canadian and expansive yet accessible, well-paced and safe. The guides were patient and skilled and showed us lots of fun.
Food was incredible and very tasty. Lodge was clean and bedding was very comfortable. Helicopter rides were smooth and precise.
All told, it went too quickly. Would loved to have stayed an extra day exploring another area - maybe more treed, stretch out and learn more about the environment.
Hope to heli ski with Roko sometime!

The food is amazing. Stayed at the Bugaboo lodge and what a joke. Half the crowd will go to sit in a chair. The lodge manager was a pompous jerk (Dave), surprised his body supports his ego. All of the hikes and the terrain from the bugaboos lodge can be accessed via hiking from the logging road. I was almost embarrased to have to use the helicopter to get to these sites when an additional walk could access them without the cost of the polution.
Save your money.

Several years ago my wife and I visited the Whistler area in July for a week of hiking. Unfortunately, it rained the entire week. It wasn't a little rain, it poured buckets the entire week. We never even saw a glimpse of the mountains during our stay due to the clouds. 7 full days of rain.
Wondering if anyone has had a similar experience during a stay with Canadian Mountain Holidays? It would KILL me to pay out this kind of money to be sitting in the room all day due to inclement weather. Is there anything else to do at all other than hike?
Thanks for your comments!

I stayed at the Cariboo Lodge for six days last summer. We hiked all day every day and only put on rain gear once for a short time. Keep in mind that the Columbia Mtns are a temperate rain forest. They get a lot of rain. There was one day that we were brought back to the lodge early, but that was not for rain but low clouds. Our pilot was concerned that he would not be able to land and pick us up if the clouds continued to come in. When we got back to the lodge there was an amazing lunch buffet waiting for us. After lunch the clouds had dissipated and we went back up for the afternoon. To more directly answer your question, there is not a lot to do other than hike. There is a gym and a climbing wall at the lodge but the primary activity is the hiking. My experience is that rain did not impact me trip.

Should I purchase Canadian money before traveling to Canada?
Written May 31, 2018
You do not need to in most areas. A Visa credit card works fine. I have only needed cash when I was snowmobiling in very remote areas on other trips. I had brought Canadian money with me on the CMH trip and never used it.

Hi
I'm looking to book a heli-skiing trip with CMH. Can you provide me some information on the how I should choose the different lodges. We are Advanced intermediate skiers who ski every weekend in Switzerland in Verbier but have never done a heli-ski trip before. We are aiming to go in the first week of April 2018. Some friends recommended Cariboos and Adamant but there does not seem to be vacancies during the period conveninet for us.
Thanks!
