- Yip Yip27 contributionsBeautiful ViewBeautiful! The walk up is pretty easy- just a lot of uphill but very short until you get to the viewing platform. We opted to go over the fence before reaching the overcrowded viewing deck and took photos from underneath the platform- still a great view but only a few other people so much better and easier to get photos!Visited October 2022Written February 24, 2023
- PBPGYorkshire, United Kingdom6,007 contributionsGreat views, would be better when thawedThe path to the lake was Ice/compacted snow and was a tricky walk up and even trickier coming down. Took us about 30 minutes to get up to the lake. Stunning view once you got there though, then a tough 30 minutes down again, not sure it was worth the effort, Lake Louis was probably better and much easier to get to!Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten May 14, 2023
- SNelsonTerrace, Canada659 contributionsBeautifulStunning views. We visited during May long weekend. I knew Lake Louise & Morraine lake would be swamped so we opted to drive a little further. The parking lot was less than a quarter full. It’s just a short walk to the view point. So beautiful with out the crowds of people!Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten May 30, 2023
- dleghornEnglewood, Florida8 contributionsPeyto Lake visit stunning visirWhat an amazing view and beautiful site, stunning! We stopped on way on Ice Field Parkway to Jasper. One of the best of many spectacular views on our Canadian Rockies trip. It was about 1/3 mile walk from parking area, all uphill. At that elevation we stopped once on way there to catch breath due to elevation. It was well worth it, simply spectacular! No fee to see, parking may be little crowded in busy season.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten June 10, 2023
- MPP2703Caythorpe, United Kingdom1,763 contributionsWorth the trek, but it is uphill, so may not be suitable for all.Definitely somewhere to visit. Stopped on the Ice Field Parkway on our trip from Banff to Jasper, Free parking, that at the time we visited, was not too busy. It is uphill and quite a way, so may not be suitable for all, although there maybe a higher car park (possibly for buses) that may make the trek a little easier.Visited June 2023Written June 18, 2023
- cypinsLouisiana273 contributionsBeautiful Wolf Lake! This lake is a sleeper, it is not nearly as crowded as Moraine or Louise, but does have the views. There is a short hike to the viewpoint and it is a little steep but your effort will be rewarded. This lake is very blue but the best part is that the Lake is shaped like a wolf head. Definitely make this one of your stops along the parkway, it is worth it!Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten July 11, 2023
- TennisStar602New Jersey611 contributionsI thought that Peyto Lake should definitely be considered to be among the best lakes within this park!Peyto Lake had a breathtaking watercolor, and I got some great pictures of the entire lake. The surrounding mountains and the trees were out of this world. I took a trail that was probably about half (1/2) a mile long to reach the boardwalk that allowed me to see this lake. It was not difficult to find parking. Although this attraction was crowded, it was definitely under control. I would encourage people to dress appropriately in terms of their usage of warm clothes and proper footwear.Visited July 2023Travelled soloWritten July 13, 2023
- CozgroveHarwood Heights, Illinois17 contributionsDo NOT skip this. Best part of our trip. This was our FAVORITE lake, sight, activity, parkway stop, etc in all of Banff and Jasper NPs. Made our trip. The beauty was unparalleled. Get off the beaten path a bit away from the viewing platform crowds and you'll be rewarded with a serene view of the most majestic sight of your life.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten July 18, 2023
- Christina BLouisiana2,712 contributionsAwesome StopAlthough this hike/walk is about 1/3 if a mile (.6 km) each way on a smooth paced path there’s a lot of uphill. I’ve got knee issues and did ok going up and down. Going up gets your heart going & knees aching on the way down.. but take your time & it’s doable. Knew the bus parking lot at the top would be better for me, but I didn’t try to park up top. Great viewing platform and look out areas.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten July 26, 2023
- JobylakeOttery St. Mary, United Kingdom937 contributionsPictures do not do this lake justiceWe missed Peyto Lake the first time we drove the Icefields Parkway back in 2016 so we added it to our itinerary this time. We left Banff and drove the scenic 1A Highway (no wildlife seen) down to Lake Louise taking in Morant’s Curve and on to Peyto Lake. The car park here is not massive so it tends to be one in one out depending on the time of day you arrive. We arrived late morning so the car park was pretty much full. The walk to the lake is uphill all the way (one or two steep bits) but it is well worth the walk. There is a coach and disabled area higher up so the walk to the lake will be more level. There is a viewing platform (which was built when the area was closed during pandemic times). We had fabulous weather with sun and cloud so the view changed depending on whether the sun was out or behind the clouds. It gets busy here but by being patient, you will get to the edge and get to see the most gloriously blue lake you will ever see. The photos you see on the web do not do this lake justice. By walking back away from the platform, you will find gaps in the fences to enable you to climb down to get much better photos and a photo with just you (and the odd photobombing chipmunk). If you are brave enough to clamber over rocks, you can find yourself in an area by yourself and get some different perspective views. Our route back to Banff on the Icefields Parkway saw a bear jam. We managed to get very close to a young black bear. We managed to get pictures before Parks Canada Rangers appeared to monitor the situation. We also stopped at Bow Lake (see other review) to get an afternoon’s view as this view also changes depending on the time of day.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten August 14, 2023

The water at Peyto Lake is just as blue as all the pictures that you have seen. There is a paved path from the parking lot that leads to an overcrowded overlook. Do not settle for the crowded overlook. As you approach the viewing platform, the paved trail heads off to the left. Follow the trail to the left and up an incline. There are several trails off to the right that lead to a deserted clearing where you have a peaceful view of the lake to enjoy without the throngs of bus tourists.

Nice lake and pleasant drive. There is a small hike with elevation gain to get to. You don't directly visit the lake, the hike is to a viewing platform above the lake, so after you take a few pics, thats it. There are other lakes on the way to visit.

It was quite cold and snowing on this short hike. It’s quite steep. The altitude, combined with the cold, combined with the dry air, had us huffing and puffing. No less than 7 groups of people stopped us as we walked back and asked us how much further, so that gives you an idea - it’s more challenging than it appears. However the blue of the lake when you finish - wow! If you need to, stop and catch your breath a few times, but try to keep going!

Be ready for a short uphill trek to view this beautiful lake. The trail is short but it'll give you the exercise to burn off a few calories. Wear something with a good sole and grip.
Spectacular views of the lake, absolutely an amazing sight.
Come early, gets crowded when tour buses or big families arrive, gets crowded (and noisy sometimes)

There is an elevated lookout not far from the highway. The parking area is large and many tour buses stop here for a look out over the lake. It is a very beautiful spot, far above the water.

Steep climb, harder than these seniors expected but well worth the effort. Spectacular views of the colorful lake. But the round trip was longer than expected because of our age.

On our drive up to Jasper we stopped here in the rain and it was still beautiful. On the way back down to Banff it was sunny and perfect weather and stopped again. It was mush busier but much more gorgeous. DO not miss this stop.
Probably one of the most beautiful lakes in the park that most visitors visit. The colour of the lake is crazy anf you can get very beautiful pictures.

We were on a tour bus that stopped off to look at Bow Lake. It was a short walk from the parking lot to the main viewing area of the lake. The far end of the lake looks like the outline of a wolf with 2 pointed ears and a snout. The water is beautiful green-blue and the lake is surrounded by trees and mountains. Very beautiful and worth the stop.

I am planning to take some elderly folks from England to see Peyto lake later this month. Is there any way that they can get a view of the lake without the "short steep climb"? These people are mobile, but not hikers.
Thanks for any suggestions

I think that is the only way to get to the overlook. Only about 10-20 minutes, but yes, it does have some inclines. I did see elderly people walk it, they just went slower. I saw one guy probably around mid-80s and not in the best condition make it, he just went very slow.
Slow and careful, if they're mobile, they can do it.

How long is the hike from the main parking lot to the wooden viewing deck?

Any listing of specific date that the Lake will be closed for renovations?! I have a group traveling there on Friday, August 16 and am hoping that mid-August means later than the 16th? Any idea of "real" closing date? If it does close is it possible to at least look at it from some point?

I found this information in the internet. Hope this helps.
The Peyto Lake and Bow Summit area will now remain open to visitors until mid-August 2019.
At that time, the entire area – including parking lots, restrooms, trails and viewpoints – will close for improvements for the remainder of the year. Start dates remain dependent on weather and contractor availability. We will continue to provide updates as timelines are confirmed. Thank you for your patience while we improve the quality and reliability of national park experiences and safeguard these special places for the future.

We are going in September 2018. It’s scheduled to be closed for parking lot renovations. HEARTBROKEN! This is on my bucket list. Is there any other way to hike to this lake?

Do you know if it’s upper or lower parking lot renovations? If it is upper you can hike the main road up as that is what everyone in the winter has to do anyways. If it’s lower you likely will be able to park on the side of the highway or at the entrance way into the parking area and again hike up the main road leading to the viewpoint. Hope this helps!

My girlfriend & I will driving along the Icefields Parkway on the 10th-12th September 2019 on our journey from Vancouver to Calgary. I've read a article somewhere saying that the route up to Bow summit to view peyto lake will be closed around this time for repair/maintenance.
Is this true, if so is there any other viewing point?

In the Banff National Park booklet, it says that the Bow Summit Parking will be closed as soon as April 2019 for repairs. I visited in April 2019, and it was still open, though impacted with snow. I would recommend checking back in here closer to your departure. My guess is that they will begin repairs once the snow melts.

I was wondering if the lake is accessible in the winter. I know the road is not plowed, but perhaps snowshoeing in? If I were to do that, how far from the where the road is no longer plowed to the lake lookout? Is it even worth the trouble? I do realize that the lake will be covered in snow and ice.

Roads are only ploughed once per day in winter. None of service areas remain open. Know no more......

Most altitudes in the Canadian Rockies are not that extreme. You should not have any problems unless you have abnormal respiratory problems. Bow Summit is the highest point on that highway and it 6800 feet.

Is the viewpoint accessible by a stroller?
DebM908
Bedford158 contributions
When we were there the end of may part of the trail was snow covered . If the snow has disappeared it is actually a paved path to the wooden lookout so you could push a stroller. The parking lot was not paved though , the path that we used started at the far end of the parking lot . I understand there is another path that starts near the washrooms and goes to the same look off , not sure if it is paved. The one we took is about a 10 minutes walk in but worth it .
