Our family of four recently visited the Canadian Rockies, a trip that has been on our list for many years. We travel a lot and when we travel, we enjoy being active. On this trip we scheduled hiking and biking in Banff, Lake Louise, Yoho and Jasper.

We spent two full days hiking with Joel Hagen of Great Divide Nature Interpretation. Hiking with Joel was the single best decision we made on our trip; we all agree that those hikes were the highlight of our trip to the Canadian Rockies.

Joel is levels above any guide we have ever met which is why he is so highly recommended. We were fortunate to be visiting "preseason" so Great Divide had some openings in what is normally a fully booked schedule. Joel spent some time in advance getting to know us and he tailored hikes to our interests. Topics discussed resonated with our different age groups. Also, the hiking pace was comfortable and aligned with our fitness levels.

Joel is exceptionally personable and passionate about nature. He combines that passion with his many years of experience working for Parks Canada and the net is an elevated experience for hikers. We came away with a great appreciation for all aspects of the amazing natural landscapes, the wildlife and the history.

Everyone should visit the Canadian Rockies and go hiking...and if you really want to appreciate the natural wonders there, go hiking with Great Divide. We are thrilled to recommend Joel and his company Great Divide nature Interpretation.

Thank you Stephen. That's possibly the best review I've ever received, so I really appreciate you taking the time to write about our hiking trips. And of course I couldn't be more pleased to know that our two days together were meaningful for you and your family. Being in my guests' "highlight reel" is what I strive for.

We spent a few days in Banff and Lake Louise on a family vacation (grown kids, so 4 adults total) and had the absolute pleasure of booking two hiking days with Joel, and the experience was the highlight of our trip.

Joel is super knowledgeable about the National Parks and the whole Lake Louise area, and shares engaging information during the hike that we found fascinating. He's great at answering questions, great to chat with, and I never knew what he would pull from his pack next that would help us understand more about the plants or animals or mountains surrounding us. The hikes themselves are tailored to what you share is your fitness level and desired experience, and the natural beauty is incredible.

I cannot recommend enough to do a hike, a bird walk, a snowshoe, etc with Great Divide Nature Interpretation. Thank you, Joel, for a truly wonderful experience that we will never forget!

Thanks, Alexa, for such a positive review. This week's two hikes were a real pleasure for me, as well, so thank you to the whole family for your keen interest and enthusiasm. And the acceptance by everyone of my dad jokes showed great respect and patience on your part.

A day out with Joel isn't just a walk in the woods, it's a day you'll remember for ever.

He plainly loves the outdoors & this enthusiasm is infectious, you can't wait for him to impart more interesting facts about all manner of things; who knew snow was so fascinating!!!

We did a full day snowshoeing, the sense of isolation and wilderness makes you fizz; there's something very special about wandering down a boulder strewn frozen river where nobody has been for months, and stumbling onto some fresh bobcat tracks.

I'd recommend a full day, it gives you the opportunity to get really far out into the woods.

Thanks, Tim. I'm so glad it was an outing that has left you with strong memories. I enjoy the full day snowshoe trips as well, especially in late February and March, when the days are getting longer and warmer. And seeing the lynx tracks (the more winter-loving cousin of the bobcat) was a big bonus!

This was a great adventure into the fascinating world of natural forests and trees. Joel really brought it alive with his expertise, showing us different forest areas and pointing out specific features.

Joel was a wonderful guide during our snowshoeing trip. He shared many stories and made sure we were comfortable and well looked after. The homemade power bars and hot chocolate were very tasty. I highly recommend spending a day with Joel on his tour.

Had an awesome snowshoe tour with Joel! It was both fun and informative - we learned to identify some animal tracks and about some of the winter woodland animals. We were able to do some "off trail" snowshoeing, which was really fun. I'd definitely recommend this tour to anyone. We also really enjoyed the homemade energy bars and hot chocolate!

Thanks, Mike, for both the review and the photos. That was a fun day, and we should be able to do a lot more "off trail" snowshoeing soon, as we've had snow this week.

On Saturday afternoon my partner, our 2 friends and I set off to Lake Louise to meet Joel for a snowshoe walk through the forest. Little did we know that it was going to be one of the most exceptional experiences we could have asked for.

The Hike- Joel took us through a thoughtfully planned out loop through the forest. We saw many signs of wildlife as well as the most beautiful snow-flocked evergreens you will ever lay eyes on. The route we took was completely untouched- no one else was within earshot so we felt completely secluded from the world.

The Knowledge- We mentioned to Joel that we were particularly interested in wildlife, so he made sure to stop us whenever there were any opportunities to teach us about wildlife that recently passed through the area. You can easily tell that Joel is absolutely flooded with knowledge- I don't think there was one question that he couldn't thoughtfully answer. Or at least give a very insightful speculation! He is the nature pro.

The Personal Touch- As mentioned in Joel's description of the snowshoe tour, he brought us his delicious homemade hot chocolate and power bars. These did not disappoint. Our entire group requested that he send the recipe. It was the perfect break for us all to sit down, get a jolt of energy, and be back on our way. On top of this, Joel made us really feel that this was no 'cookie-cutter' experience. He got to know us each individually, remembering small details about our lives and connecting it back to the tour. This was amazing and the most personal touch we could have asked for.

The Guide- Lastly, but most importantly, Joel. Not only is Joel one of the best tour guides I have ever had the honour in spending an afternoon with, but a truly exceptional human being. Once you meet Joel, you will feel like you have known him your whole life and you will be sad to say goodbye to him!

I feel blessed to have had this experience and can not recommend it enough for others. Joel- thank you again for an incredible day.

Wow! Thanks so much Courtney (team Gordy member). I'm really stoked that the day was so enjoyable for all of you, especially when you were hosting your firends from Chicago. It's really gratifying to find out that the snowshoeing tours I run are memorable and meaningful for my guests. Great guiding also needs great guests, so give yourselves a five star rating for being so keen and enthusiastic. -Joel

I cannot recommend the nature hike with Joel more thoroughly! He immediately connected with our group, with his humor and genuineness. He made sure we were engaged, comfortable and safe. Honestly I wish he had been my science teacher back in school - he knows it all and explains it in such an engaging way (spoiler: props are involved!). Can’t wait to go back!!

Thanks, Diane. That's high praise, especially with the rainy end to our day together. I'm glad you enjoyed our time on the trail, and I hope it counts as training for your cross-country ski racing season coming up!
