Had an awesome snowshoe tour with Joel! It was both fun and informative - we learned to identify some animal tracks and about some of the winter woodland animals. We were able to do some "off trail" snowshoeing, which was really fun. I'd definitely recommend this tour to anyone. We also really enjoyed the homemade energy bars and hot chocolate!

Thanks, Mike, for both the review and the photos. That was a fun day, and we should be able to do a lot more "off trail" snowshoeing soon, as we've had snow this week.

On Saturday afternoon my partner, our 2 friends and I set off to Lake Louise to meet Joel for a snowshoe walk through the forest. Little did we know that it was going to be one of the most exceptional experiences we could have asked for.

The Hike- Joel took us through a thoughtfully planned out loop through the forest. We saw many signs of wildlife as well as the most beautiful snow-flocked evergreens you will ever lay eyes on. The route we took was completely untouched- no one else was within earshot so we felt completely secluded from the world.

The Knowledge- We mentioned to Joel that we were particularly interested in wildlife, so he made sure to stop us whenever there were any opportunities to teach us about wildlife that recently passed through the area. You can easily tell that Joel is absolutely flooded with knowledge- I don't think there was one question that he couldn't thoughtfully answer. Or at least give a very insightful speculation! He is the nature pro.

The Personal Touch- As mentioned in Joel's description of the snowshoe tour, he brought us his delicious homemade hot chocolate and power bars. These did not disappoint. Our entire group requested that he send the recipe. It was the perfect break for us all to sit down, get a jolt of energy, and be back on our way. On top of this, Joel made us really feel that this was no 'cookie-cutter' experience. He got to know us each individually, remembering small details about our lives and connecting it back to the tour. This was amazing and the most personal touch we could have asked for.

The Guide- Lastly, but most importantly, Joel. Not only is Joel one of the best tour guides I have ever had the honour in spending an afternoon with, but a truly exceptional human being. Once you meet Joel, you will feel like you have known him your whole life and you will be sad to say goodbye to him!

I feel blessed to have had this experience and can not recommend it enough for others. Joel- thank you again for an incredible day.

Wow! Thanks so much Courtney (team Gordy member). I'm really stoked that the day was so enjoyable for all of you, especially when you were hosting your firends from Chicago. It's really gratifying to find out that the snowshoeing tours I run are memorable and meaningful for my guests. Great guiding also needs great guests, so give yourselves a five star rating for being so keen and enthusiastic. -Joel

I cannot recommend the nature hike with Joel more thoroughly! He immediately connected with our group, with his humor and genuineness. He made sure we were engaged, comfortable and safe. Honestly I wish he had been my science teacher back in school - he knows it all and explains it in such an engaging way (spoiler: props are involved!). Can’t wait to go back!!

Thanks Jenny. That was such a fun day together. I'm happy that you made our hike part of the birthday celebrations. I hope the whole gang is able to return for another reunion.

Thanks, Diane. That's high praise, especially with the rainy end to our day together. I'm glad you enjoyed our time on the trail, and I hope it counts as training for your cross-country ski racing season coming up!

We enjoyed a wonderful hike to Lake Moraine with Joel. . .he is very knowledgeable and he is passionate in sharing his love and enthusiasm for nature, the fauna and the animals (big and small!) that live in the wild! Joel chose a perfect hike for us in terms of level of difficulty, distance and timing. We highly recommend Great Divide when you visit the Canadian Rockies!!

Thanks, Sue. I really appreciate your review. Since you mentioned animals big and small, you might be interested to hear that a grizzly bear and her yearling cub were seen yesterday on the trail we were on last week! Everything ended well, but it just goes to show that you never know who is going to turn up when you're hiking.

Joel led a memorable trip from Moraine to Hidden Lake for our family in July 23. The landscape was stunning and the walk would have been managable on our own, but Joel's interpretation and bag full of surprises added manyfold to the excursion. By reaching into his pack to bring out props to demonstrate what we were seeing our understanding of the ecosystem around us was heightened and our day even more enjoyable. Thank you Joel, for making it extra special for us. Sam, Fraser, Angus (10 yrs) and Duncan (9yrs).

Thanks so much, Sam. It was a pleasure to be out with you, Fraser, and the boys. A day with a raven puppet, a thunderstorm, and the tales of turtle rescue expert Duncan is a memorable day in my books!

I highly recommend Joel as a guide for families, adults, and teens. He is fun and uses entertaining techniques for explaining difficult geological concepts. Our half day interpretive walk around Bow Lake was peppered with a remarkable depth of knowledge of flora, fauna, history that made the breathtakingly beautiful surroundings even more memorable. I will recommend him to anyone I know going to the Rockies!

Hi Shelley, sorry about the late response... it's been a busy summer! Thank you very much for your review. I'm glad you enjoyed yourselves. I don't think you gave enough credit to how flawless and beautiful the day was! It definitely made my job easier. I hope you have great memories of our day together at that beautiful spot, and thanks again.

We had an AMAZING birding tour with Joel through the Bow Valley to find a couple of target bird species that I had specifically requested. Joel was extremely knowledgeable about the birds (of course) but also all local flora and fauna. We got to see several lifer bird species for me, along with other mammals that I was not expecting to see. The tour was absolutely conducive for photography, and I got a bunch of keeper images from the tour.
Joel is extremely kind, patient, and accommodating and it is an absolute joy to go birding/hiking with him. If you are interested in signing up, I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed, but I must warn you to be prepared for some dad jokes :)
I will be joining another one of Joel's tours on my next visit!

Thanks, V. Glad the trip went well for both of you, and that you caught sight of some of the birds on your wish list. About a week after your trip, I got lucky, and saw a whole family of barred owls (youngsters included) down near Banff.

This was my second trip to Lake O’Hara with Joel as our guide. I first visited 12 years ago with Joel and have been looking forward to a return trip ever since. This time I brought along my 9 year old son and 73 year old mom so they could share in its beauty.

Lake O’Hara is truly one of the most magical places on earth. The grand viewpoints are absolutely breathtaking, but the tiny details are what make this place so magical. From the gorgeous lichen that fit together like a perfect puzzle to the baby trees growing amid the spongy moss, nature lovers will find something to marvel at around every corner. And Joel is the perfect guide to unlock the stories behind this fascinating, beautifully preserved ecosystem. Joel has the ability to make explanations accessible to all ages, but what’s even more impressive is that he manages to do so while also imparting his infectious sense of curiosity, excitement, and reverence for this place. Our hike with Joel to the Opabin Plateau overlooking Lake O’Hara and Mary Lake was a perfect balance of adventure, beauty, learning, and pure joy.

A note about kids. My son is often a reluctant hiker, but Joel made the entire experience engaging from beginning to end. Joel kept my 9-year-old interested with all of his explanations, complemented by his thoughtfully crafted props, photos, and other realia to make the experience a memorable one. We had a blast following the trail of a pika gathering food for its hay pile, watching a marmot take on sentry duty, listening to the song of a varied thrush, and admiring the thunderous sound and majestic sight of multiple avalanches from a distance.

Joel is truly a gifted and incredibly dedicated naturalist guide. Our day to Lake O’Hara gave us memories (and stunning photos) that we will treasure for years to come. Thank you, Joel, for a truly magical, soul-filling day! We hope to return for larch season in the years ahead.

Thank you, L. What a delight to get home from guiding today and read your review. I'm really glad that the pika haypile hunt, the tale of trees getting the best of their seed eating rivals, and all the other stories resonated with you and your family. It was a pleasure to be out with you this week.
