About
Lougheed House is a National & Provincial Historic site, Museum and gardens located in Calgary's Beltline community. This 14,000 sq.ft sandstone mansion was built in 1891 by Senator James Lougheed and his wife Lady Isabella Lougheed. Completely restored, today it is the Beltline community's hub of cultural happenings and programs offering preservation and interpretation of this home, the Lougheed family and early Calgary. We also offer spectacular flower and vegetable gardens (free), weddings and events, and indoors (with paid admission) we offer self-guided and audio tours, historic interpreters (if booked in advance) and year round revolving exhibits, concerts and happenings produced with our cultural collaborators.

As a national and provincial historic site you would think one level of government would come up the sensible idea of having the interior open seven days a week as an interesting tourist attraction in Calgary. There is some exterior signage about the original design of the building and later renovations. The Beaulieu Gardens did not strike me as being more than marginally impressive on the floral front.

Took my mom here for Mothers Day afternoon tea. Too early for the gardens but we did get a free tour of the house with our purchase of the Tea. Lots of history, such a beautiful old home. The Tea was OK. Not much selection for tea but found some we liked. The service was quite slow but friendly.

I fell in love with this as our wedding venue and Cathy was such a sweetheart. But we didn't find out how terribly they handle wedding planning here until after we had already put our non refundable payment down. I was laughed at for wanting a cake cutting song. Told it was stupid and she had never heard of such a thing. Then I was told we couldn't blow bubbles on the grounds as I had hoped to, to keep the bit of tradition following a ceremony. I was scoffed at for even thinking of it. Was told the bubbles cannot touch the house... Ok... I had a few decorations I really wanted but was told they are stupid and they couldn't understand me wanting to put my own touch to it. I had also opted for the cocktail bar downstairs, but found only standing tables, so my guests, especially the elderly, didn't come downstairs to dance, because it was easier to refill drinks upstairs and nobody wanted the hassle of going up and down constantly. Even the smallest things, like the fact they have "bride and groom" parking, but when we showed up, all the parking spots were full. When we got in (running down the street while it was snowing), I asked, and only then was I infirmed their "reserved" parking was the handicap spot and the loading zone... I am so upset we had our wedding here, I wish I could have a redo. The staff here wasn't very welcoming, and made me feel small and insignificant. They didn't care one bit about my wedding, they have their own plans for your wedding and barely give any leeway. I wish I had read reviews on the place before spending a small fortune on a mediocre venue.

My new husband I had planned a wedding for October of last year and because of work issues of mine, we ended up canceling everything. Fortunately, his job improved dramatically and we decided to go ahead and get married! I googled "unique wedding venues Calgary" and the Lougheed house came up. Amazingly, my husband was born and raised in Calgary and I've lived in Calgary since I was a young girl and neither of us had even heard of the house. We saw pictures of other weddings there and fell completely in love, without even seeing the house! I emailed Cathy to find out more information and book a veiwing. Needless to say, I walked around that house with my jaw on the floor the entire tour- it is absolutely stunning!!! To find such a a gem in the heart of Calgary and then imagine getting married there was incredible!! The people that manage the house are really fantastic!! From the first email with Cathy, to planning food choices with Kerri and then meeting Weldon, who was in charge of getting the house set up for our event, everything was perfect!! We decided to do a winter wedding (January 4th) and though it ended up being pretty bitter cold that day, every single aspect of our big day went off without a hitch!! I can't properly express in this how absolutely PERFECT our wedding was, but I will say that we quite literally had the wedding of our dreams!! <3 I could not have imagined a more spectacular way to marry my Love! Our guests are still talking about our wedding!! Everyone enjoyed the cocktail reception and late night snack foods so much, and though my gluten free brother was able to come at the last minute and I wasn't able to plan appropriately for him and food, the staff made him gluten free sandwiches anyway!! I honestly don't even know how many staff were there that evening, but everyone I saw was professional and very good to all our guests!! I have told everyone who will listen about this location because not only are we helping to support the beautiful Lougheed house by hosting events there, but the people of the Lougheed house were so amazing to work with, I didn't have a single worry leading up to and on our wedding day! Our wedding commissioner also had his 70th birthday celebration there and raved about it when we told him where the wedding would be! The house is not just for weddings!! Please go to their website to see everything they have to offer!! As a side note, my husband and I took his kids to the house for their "Christmas" display and that was truly the most wonderful day!!!! It was all decorated for Christmas; beautiful trees in every room, vintage ornament crafts in the basement, which the kids adored!! And even the most adorable vintage Santa Claus!! He was so kind with the kids and they got to bring home their pictures with him!!
Thank you Cathy, Kerri, Weldon and all the staff at the Lougheed house!! Our wedding was pure perfection because of all of you<3

This home is a quiet and relaxing visit. The grounds are a gardener's paradise and it is hard to believe this area was prairie at the time of this home's construction.
Admission was $8 each but a CAA/AMA membership took 50% off this price. The receptionist was welcoming and informative, and she set the tone for our visit.
The home is partially furnished - other rooms are empty. At Christmas, the annual fundraiser, a fully decorated, furnished home is on display, complete with live musicians! The daily life of the Lougheed family is outlined throughout, complete with family ancestry and photographs. The lower level houses a great little gift shop. Actual vintage china and accessories are featured as well.
For an afternoon of history, opulence, and a trip to another era, visit Lougheed House. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Lougheed House has a historical reason for being there. It was the house of the then senator and his family with 6 kids and staff. However, considering all its historical references, it is just a small house nothing more. The admission fee is way to steep 8.50$ + GST I was lucky I had a coupon which let me get one on one free!!! The house winds up in 2 floors, with reasonable sized rooms, all the interiors have been modernized nothing spectacular to see or learn. I was disappointed with the whole experience. The restaurant was closed, due to a private function. The gift shop was over priced so I just picked up a magnet to remind me that I visited the place.

Hi, Sorry that your experience was not the best it could have been. We are constantly looking to improve our visitor experience, and will take your comments into consideration. Please know that we continue to add furnishings, and have a series of rotating historical and art exhibits, and are also constantly developing new programming. As a side note, it was interesting to read your comment about the modernized interiors- perhaps that's because when the house was built in 1891 it had hot and cold running water, electricity, steam radiators, and all of the other modern conveniences you can think of! Many visitors do not expect this in one of the oldest houses in Calgary.

The historical house is downtown, outside the core on 13th Ave and 7th St. I have visited a few times. It was $8.50 the first two times but on this occasion it was $4 but I believe it was because I had lunch there. You can take a guided tour or go through on your own.

The restaurant (11am-2pm Wednesday - Sunday/Brunch weekends 10am-2pm) is lovely and has a feeling of class to it. Lunch was $46 for the two of us.
If you like to see how things were once then this is a place for you. The decor, furniture and the layout were very nice. When it was first built there were no buildings between it and where the governor worked which is somewhere where the tower is now so that shows you how far the city has come.

There are art displays and a gift shop in the basement as well as a book room which has many old legal storybooks to thumb thru.

We had our wedding here a couple of weeks ago. We picked the location because of ease of access and the beauty of the location, although sad to say I won't be using them again. Cathy - the Event Manager - is abnormally hard to get a hold of (I would have to send two, maybe three emails before getting a reply), they "forgot" to send things over to us (i.e revised contracts, receipts). Kerry - the Head Chef/ Decorations Coordinator is anything but professional. On the day of the rehearsal Cathy was nowhere to be in site, but Kerry was in charge of it and showed up in what appeared to be yoga pants and a T-shirt. There was no communication between the two in regards to arrangements we had made for our decorations. Poor management of the wedding all around.

Back in the 1890s when Calgary was still a small pioneer town, this sandstone mansion was the centre of its social and political scene. Originally known as Beaulieu, the house was built for the wealthy and influential Senator James Lougheed and his growing family. Although primarily a family home, it played host to many celebrities of the day, including royalty.

When the Depression hit, the family couldn’t pay the property taxes, and the house was taken over by the city. The furnishings were later sold at auction. Consequently, when you walk through the rooms, the plaques displaying archival photos are your best guide to what the place looked like back in the glory days. The house went through some structural changes when it was put to other uses – an employment training centre, a women’s army barracks and a Red Cross blood donor clinic – and some decorative elements suffered. But in recent years the house has been restored to something more closely resembling the original.

You may get a guide to take you through the house if a volunteer is available. Otherwise, a self-guided audio tour is included in the price of admission. The commentary provides insights into the Lougheed family, the history of Calgary and Alberta, and the restoration of the house. The dining room is now a restaurant. It doesn’t seem particularly private, given that visitors may be traipsing through it, but it seems popular.
