I don't actually get downtown as much these days, but had an opportunity recently to check a few things out. It's hard to go downtown and not experience Stephen Avenue Walk in some way - and that's good because it is still an interesting place. Since my last visit downtown, things have picked up considerably, and you see more people out and about. Although the patio season is over, most of the restaurants and cafes are open, and most that I saw had lots of people in them. Although we had a freak cold/snow period recently, this last week the weather has been great, and that makes outdoor attractions like Stephen Avenue even more interesting to explore. For Calgarians feeling cooped up, or any visitors passing through, I'd recommend checking it out - you'll find something interesting to see or do or eat or drink, the mall itself is wide enough to make for easy COVID distancing.

When Calgary is in the grip of a cold snap like it is currently, people don't linger on Stephen Avenue Walk, but all the restaurants and attractions on it are still easy to get to. There is quite a lot of indoor parking nearby, and the Plus 15 elevated interior sidewalk system crosses over it and parallels it as several points. By day it is closed to vehicles and in anything but the worst weather, still a nice promenade. After 6 pm, it is open to vehicle traffic and there is some street parking. On our recent visits to downtown Calgary, although we didn't walk its length, we were able to admire it from several vantage points.

This street is fairly long and completely full of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. We have loved walking uo and down the street every day while on vacation, people watching and stopping in for a bite to eat or a drink here and there. It's nice that the street is closed off to traffic and you can walk leisurely.
We really enjoyed Rosso Coffee Roasters in the mornings, and El Furniture Warehouse (don't be fooled by the name-its a great restaurant/pub with very reasonably priced delicious food and drinks)
Rose Garden Thai was also a very good place to eat on this street with great, authentic Thai food.

Whille it is nice to have a pedestrian area in any city, there seemed little more to this one than restaurants mostly on both sides of the avenue. There is some decorative work above part of the walk. 'The Conversation' sculpture can be seen here. Have a bit and move on.

Stephen Avenue Walk is a wonderful place all year. It's a bit tricky when it's cold in the winter to enjoy it as much, but Calgary has inaugurated a couple of winter festivals, Chinook Blast and Calgary Glow, to make this amazing place more inviting at that time. The festivals are slightly different, but their operations overlap, and so to know more about them, you DO need to consult their web sites. It's brilliant for families with kids, adults who just want to see something unique, photographers, anybody who just wants to get out in on a winter's evening. It VERY well organized, washrooms, fire pits, things to see and do. If you live in Calgary, or are visiting, DO NOT miss Stephen Avenue Walk during the winter festivals!

Stephen Ave. Is a great pedestrian walk through the middle of downtown Calgary. Lots of restos and touristy shoos. Also has the entrance to the CORE Shopping Mall. It's got a quirky group of buskers and some slightly off-colour locals sitting around with nothing else to do, but, if you just want to do some touristy sightseeing, this is the place.

Stephen Avenue had many lively restaurants and expensive stores. It was only open to pedestrians.i saw many live shows, and it was packed due to the Stampede. There was an indoor mall right next to it.

Walking down the street was ok although smoke from recent wildfires was unpleasant! We were there about 11 a.m. on a Saturday but not too many places appeared to be open. We observed a few homeless folks camped out - not a big deal. Getting around downtown was somewhat difficult as there is a lot of road construction and parking seemed to be limited.

My husband and I found the tour online and weren't too sure what to expect. But we were pleasantly surprised by our friendly and informative tour guide Rob. The pace was great and we were able to ask any questions that came to mind. I would definitely recommend the tour for anyone wanting a nice day out/ opportunity to learn more about the city.
Thanks again

I really liked that street, it has a couple restaurants, souvenir shops and other stores. There are many homeless or drunk people on the street tho! Especially around 10am-1pm was where there was a lot going on there, arguments, a few fights. But if you stay out of it, you should be fine.

Hi Do most establishments accept pre-paid MasterCard ?
Written July 25, 2016
I did not use a master card so I don't know. They probably do but I'd want to make sure as well before travelling that long distance with a pre-paid Master Card and find out that I couldn't. The Calgary Downtown Association page (it features Stephens Walk along with other attractions) has a contact email for general inquiries. You could send them your question in an email just to make sure.

Where is there nearby parking, if you are arriving by car. And what is the cost for parking on weekends ?
Written July 4, 2016
Yeah, there is abundant parking downtown, very close to Stephen Ave. esp. on weekends; even affordable parking on weekdays with the economic downturn. Pretty much everything you need to know is found if you google search "downtown Calgary getting around". Stephen Ave also runs parallel to the C-Train, one block north - very accessible by train or car. The link above includes helpful parking links. My personal fav. is "Eighth Avenue Place Parking" where you can park on weekends and evenings for $2. Great deal. Clean, new, secure, visible and accessible. Google that one too!

Where do we eat? WE will be going to the Calgary Tower Observation Deck and then come to Stephen Avenue to eat before going to airport. Where do you suggest for 4 adults..

Right in the area are some of the best food trucks in North America - legendary stuff. Search for YYC food trucks. I would also recommend a few spots right on Stephen Ave.: Saltlik is one of the best, reasonably priced Steakhouses. The Keg downtown location is also great, a couple blocks away. Cactus Club Cafe is a local chain, really solid, just a touch upscale, trendy. The same is true of Redwater Grille, Milestones and Earl's -- all favourites here in Alberta. At Stephen Ave, you're only 9 blocks away from the Red Mile, the 17th Ave food district. My wife's fav. is Corbeaux - I love it too. French. Authentic bakery (patisserie) and lovely french cafe. We lived in Europe for 4 years - it makes us homesick. Again, as reasonable as Calgary gets. It's an overpriced city, so be prepared for a 20% hike on food prices. If you want some good deals head to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (it's a thing, for real) or Hamilton, Ontario. Enjoy your visit!! Welcome to Cow Town!!
