Parking can be a bit expensive for just visiting the University of Calgary or getting to this gallery. However, there are lots of transit connections. For my recent visit, I was dropped off, and so didn't have to worry about that expense. The Nickle Galleries can be counted on to present high quality, thought provoking work from contemporary artists. I had wanted to see the Diana Thorneycroft exhibit, but was very impressed with all the other works I was able to see on the way to her material. If you love contemporary art, this is a must see location!…

I was on campus recently, and popped in to see what was on exhibit. They had lots of new works on display, and the space is still gorgeous. An odd thing did happen: there was a great piece in the middle of the main floor, and I didn't notice information as to who did it. I asked at the information desk, and they said people had already asked, and they didn't know... Not the most important thing, but I've never had that happen before...…

I have been to the Nickle Galleries several times and have never been disappointed with the variety of art shown. Definitely worth a visit. Signage is not terrific, but if you know you are looking for the Taylor Family Digital Library building, you should find it. I was on campus for unrelated business, but had some time to drop by the Nickle Galleries. Initially, I was disappointed, as their main gallery was closed as they were installing the next show. The helpful staff, however, said "No worry, our upstairs galleries are still open!" and so I did get to see some nice stuff. The best thing about the Nickle is that they go deep into the work of the artists they present. In the one gallery, they presented painted works by Mark Dicey, and there was a great diversity of his fascinating material. The other gallery was dedicated to graduates of the fine arts program, on the theme of Home Maker, which was very thought provoking.…

Universities should not be in the business of bringing ordinary art to the public, and the Nickle Galleries have done stunning work bring world class art that you'd never see in most commercial galleries. It's a magnificent space with a grand central hall. Upstairs, there are two smaller galleries, one of which specializes in installation art. It's centrally located on campus, near the McKimmie Library area. If you're on campus and love art, check this place out!…
