This 35 block stretch of 17th Ave SE is a Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ). Enhancements include murals, a street clock, and improvements to streetscape. Many other BRZs in Calgary (Kensington, Uptown 17, 4th St) have been very successful. International Avenue is also involved in the very successful Globalfest fireworks competition and multicultural festival. Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Avenue,_Calgary

Going through Forest Lawn 17th Avenue is known as International Avenue. Ending at Elliston Park which is a great location for the annual international fireworks competition in August known as Globalfest. The area is under urban renewal with an economic development initiative yet some great developments are generally overshadowed by the undeveloped gloomy lackluster businesses. Great for Globalfest and the... More

Although maybe not the cleanest part of the city, International Ave does have many interesting shops and restaurants of various ethnic origins. Good place to grab a quick, fresh and loaded Vietnamese sub or lunch and to poke around small shops filled with items from different countries. The merchants are friendly and appreciate your buisness.

If you are a visitor simply avoid one of the dirtiest unwelcoming streets of Calgary. The best of it is its name "International Avenue" ... You can get a glimpse into the third world. 👎

To add onto the below reviewer's clarification, International Ave in Calgary is 17th Ave SE, not SW and the two do not connect (17th Ave SE is east of Deerfoot Trail, a main thoroughfare that bi-sects the city. 17th Ave SW, or Uptown 17th or once known as the "Red Mile" commences west of the Saddledom). The originating review is... More

International Ave is actually located in the SE of Calgary, it's not the best area to be in at night but can be lovely during the day in summer. The streets are quite dated as well as most of the stores and restaurants. There is a huge selection of shops and dinning so I would recommend checking it out if... More

There are a multitude of nationalities who own or work in all kinds of stores, boutiques, restaurants, hence the name INTERNATIONAL AVENUE. It is also a gathering place for the young, especially if there is an occasion to celebrate a sports victory of some kind.
