This funicular makes it easy for everyone to access the river valley system. The car is large enough to accommodate bikes. The one thing I would caution you about is that due to vandals it may not always be operational and it is not really good in cold weather temperatures! Go figure that City of Edmonton would purchase something like this that isn't suitable for extreme cold weather.

The funicular gives easy access from the downtown core to the river valley trail system. It is large enough to accommodate a few bicycles. Supposedly it runs all year, though I have never taken it in the winter.
If you are looking for bike or wheelchair access to the trail system, this is the best option.
And if it's super crowded during the summer months, the stairs parallel it from the top down.

It's sort of an "attraction" that you'll just look at, or take a ride in (ok, been there, done that), then off you go. It's not a destination onto itself. If you HAPPEN to be in the area, check it out, otherwise, I would not make a special trip just to see/experience this.

I was visiting Edmonton this week and on Monday my twin brother suggested we go downtown as he said there had been a lot of changes since my last visit. He was right! He recommended we ride the Funicular (just behind the MacDonald Hotel) which we did. There is no charge. (Please don't compare it to the funiculaire de Montmartre--it's totally different.) It's just a short ride to some pathways and a wonderful observation deck. The views were incredible. Nice to see as well that there is security at this site.

We were in Edmonton visiting family. He suggested that we see something different. I have been in Edmonton many time but have never really looked around. The Funicular is really a great way to get into the river valley. Beautiful view of the river and area. We took the Funicular down and the others took it back up but I did the stairs back up just so I could say I did it! Wow its a lot of stairs!

Really liked it, you should check it out its worth seeing.

Went here tonight at 7pm, lift wasn't working. We just saw it go up but then would not come back down or move anywhere after that. Top tip ... instead of the unreliable funicular go into the shaw conference centre nearby and ride their indoor elevator ... which is exactly the same thing and maybe even better! Can't believe they spent so much money on this thing when they could have done so many better things for that money especially the $0.5 million yearly maintainence which would go a long way to helping the city's homeless or other benificial things.

This was so cool! Yeah it may not be a big attraction BUT, it's super cool riding in this moving sideways elevator! And the view is stunning!! Well done Edmonton! The down part is (especially if you don't live in Edmonton ) you have to pay for parking! Park by the Big Hotel , walk around and THEN g check out the gardens at that hotel!! beautiful

If you travel to Edmonton you must see and try the Funicular for the view. I did this in the fall and it was lovely but any time of year would be spectacular. It is located beside the Hotel MacDonald, also a great please to walk through.

Visited Edmonton during the extreme cold so I utilized any opportunities to be protected from the cold. I came on the bus 411 from Sherwood Park that stopped just meters from the funicular. The funicular is very slow in starting, I almost gave up, pushed the start button one more time and could hear the motor starting. It is a short ride but gives a fantastic view of the city and the North Saskatchewan River valley. You can take the stairs to the road below into the valley or follow the walkway over the road to the look out point. Right next to the funicular are stairs to go down, there is even a rail to roll your bike down. Took the stairs back to the top: 150 steps.

We have now been 4 times to the funicular and now with trails open in the river valley this is great to use, if you live in Edmonton it's a MUST VISIT or if you are from outside of Edmonton this is the BEST STOP to see the river valley and city landscape from the trails in the river. A MUST VISIT for all this will be Edmonton's number 1 attraction in the future. Fantastic for walkers, bikes and great for families to enjoy. We will be back in mid October for Fall colours.

The new funicular in EDMONTON is beauty. Not only is the design pleasing, it’s great for a stair workout (if you choose to use the stairs next to the funicular) and it’s functionality to get from Jasper Ave to the river valley is brilliant.
This is a must see.
