About
The Alberta Railway Museum, located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is a heritage outdoor display of railway equipment and buildings. It was constructed with the vision of preserving and interpreting the heritage of Canadian National Railways, Northern Alberta Railways, and short lines and industrial railways from Western Canada. The Museum replicates a small terminal with the original St. Albert station, a water tank from Gibbons and various buildings, locomotives, railway cars and track maintenance equipment. Being recognized as a historical landmark, the museum receives various requests annually for use as a monumental location for various events including weddings, birthdays and various celebrations. The artifacts provide a great stage for photography and videography. We are open seasonally Saturday to Sunday and Holiday Mondays, from Victoria Day to Labour Day from 10 am to 5 pm.

Super chill place with lots of different rail carts to go in. There are only a few cordoned off areas, so kids would love the freedom to explore. The staff are very passionate and love sharing their vast knowledge of trains with curious guests. It's a little out of the way, but it's worth it and makes you get a lot more space to explore without crowds.

A sunny Summer Saturday morning is a great time to travel back in time experiencing what train travel was like almost a century ago.

From the well preserved Edmonton area railway buildings to the train cars and locomotives it's worth a leisurely 2-hours amble on the self-guided walking tour.

I'd recommend opting in for the short ride on a half-century old, bright orange speeder which operates regularly every weekend between Victoria Day and Labour Day but on holiday long weekends the big old locomotives rumble back to life for rides to museum goers.

As people have noted, make sure you know it is open before you leave the house. I finally went to visit and it was closed but i did a drive through anyway. There are a lot of different rail cars, so more of an outdoor display than a museum. If you are interested in trains you will like it a lot, if you do not, it may not be worth the trip.

Despite a cool and drizzly day... the volunteers at the museum made this outing for my grandson a great success. The dedication of the station staff is matched by the friendly and informative individuals who operate the equipment. Thanks to all at the museum. We’ll be back.

A hidden gem. Easy walking in and around trains. Staff are friendly. So glad we went. Only wish it was possible to refurbish more but likely not. A nice history lesson

Our 4 year old is obsessed with trains so on our latest trip to Edmonton we went to the railway museum. He loved being able to explore all the engines, cabooses and cars that they have on the grounds. The highlight was the steam train ride. The engine is impressive but it is a very short stretch of track on which you go forwards and backwards a few times. Other venues usually have short circle tracks so this was a bit disappointing, but the 4 year old didn’t seem to mind. I would highly recommend it for families with young children, but not too young. The steps into the engines and cars are often very steep so unless you want to haul kids up and down them the whole time, I would recommend 4 or 5 years of age and up. Abandon your stroller and use a backpack for infants and make sure you wear proper footwear. The boardwalks and steps are treacherous if you are wearing sandals or flip flops. Other than those tips, prepare to spend 1.5-2 hours if you take in the train ride and check out everything.
