About
The Alberta Railway Museum, located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is a heritage outdoor display of railway equipment and buildings. It was constructed with the vision of preserving and interpreting the heritage of Canadian National Railways, Northern Alberta Railways, and short lines and industrial railways from Western Canada. The Museum replicates a small terminal with the original St. Albert station, a water tank from Gibbons and various buildings, locomotives, railway cars and track maintenance equipment. Being recognized as a historical landmark, the museum receives various requests annually for use as a monumental location for various events including weddings, birthdays and various celebrations. The artifacts provide a great stage for photography and videography. We are open seasonally Saturday to Sunday and Holiday Mondays, from Victoria Day to Labour Day from 10 am to 5 pm.

It is a long way out and you might think you made a wrong turn
Feb. 2020
As people have noted, make sure you know it is open before you leave the house. I finally went to visit and it was closed but i did a drive through anyway. There are a lot of different rail cars, so more of an outdoor display than a museum. If you are interested in trains you will like it a lot, if you do not, it may not be worth the trip.

Outing with my Grandson
Sep. 2019 • Family
Despite a cool and drizzly day... the volunteers at the museum made this outing for my grandson a great success. The dedication of the station staff is matched by the friendly and informative individuals who operate the equipment. Thanks to all at the museum. We’ll be back.

A hidden gem. Easy walking in and around trains. Staff are friendly. So glad we went. Only wish it was possible to refurbish more but likely not. A nice history lesson

Great find for young kids obsessed with trains
Aug. 2019 • Family
Our 4 year old is obsessed with trains so on our latest trip to Edmonton we went to the railway museum. He loved being able to explore all the engines, cabooses and cars that they have on the grounds. The highlight was the steam train ride. The engine is impressive but it is a very short stretch of track on which you go forwards and backwards a few times. Other venues usually have short circle tracks so this was a bit disappointing, but the 4 year old didn’t seem to mind. I would highly recommend it for families with young children, but not too young. The steps into the engines and cars are often very steep so unless you want to haul kids up and down them the whole time, I would recommend 4 or 5 years of age and up. Abandon your stroller and use a backpack for infants and make sure you wear proper footwear. The boardwalks and steps are treacherous if you are wearing sandals or flip flops. Other than those tips, prepare to spend 1.5-2 hours if you take in the train ride and check out everything.

Alberta Railway Museum

A little hidden gem outside of Edmonton! The Alberta Railway Museum is an interactive museum where you can climb aboard every train, caboose and cars. We visited the museum for the first time on Father’s Day and we were quite surprised at the amount of displays and the stories of the past from the informative staff. My son greatly enjoyed himself as he could touch, climb and see the experience. It’s not like a typical museum where everything is behind a rope. You are immersed in history. One of the volunteers took the time to teach Morse code as it was how the railway communicated in the past and my son got to play with it. Very interesting. The volunteers are very informative and I had a chance to ask a little more about the museum and how it’s operated. The museum is operated by a non-profit organization by mostly volunteers who are passionate about preserving Canada’s railway history. I would recommend the visit for all ages, although the museum is not necessarily wheel chair or stroller friendly.

Experience a past period
Jun. 2019 • Family
We are here as a family with three generations. The museum is about 45-minute drive north of Edmonton. The development of the Canadian railways is presented with much love and expertise. In addition to locomotives, wagons and railway technology from past eras, there is a museum and a shop. You also can celebrate great birthday parties. Further information is available on the website and on Facebook. Steam Locomotive rides are offered on long weekends. The route is relatively short. The train drives this back and forth several times. It is impressive to experience such huge technology so close in action. The volunteers do an excellent job. They are very friendly and attentive. All questions are answered nice and in detail. During the train ride, the conductor does a great job announcing and validating the nostalgic tickets. The entrance is great value. Especially considering the enormous costs for the operation and maintenance of the imposing technology. We recommend the visit to all professionals and enthusiasts! Families with children are very welcome and wonderfully entertained.

Great if you are a Railway fan.

Good venue for a family outing - fun for all ages and the kids can touch things. I believe this is run by dedicated volunteers - who are knowledgeable and make it interesting. Not an accessible display - most of the rail cars were never designed for today's accessibility standards. Spent 2 hours and could have spent more.
