You don't realize how HUGE these things are until you get the opportunity to see them up close. To truly appreciate the scale of the whole operation, takes these giants of mining. And they are still capable of being used if they were needed. A second dragline was originally at the site until it was sold to another mine, in Australia, if I remember correctly.

I loved being a part of it and seeing how large the equipment is in Fort Macmurray. This is a great education and great for taking pictures with the family. It is very safe and a well maintained place for a picnic and pictures too.
I would have loved to show this to my grandchildren and my son. They would just love it too.

The fact that it is free and not a far drive from Fort McMurray, I would recommend this if you have an hour to spare. There are not many displays to read, but what is there is informative and worthwhile. Great photo opportunities in the large shovels. It is also a nice drive as you go through some of the reclaimed lands that you never see in the oil sand protest video clips.

Easy drive to show off our region and what we are all about. You can see beautiful colors in the fall, catch a glimpse of wild life as well as learn about the Oilsands and how they are mined.

This place is a pull off from the highway from Fort McKay going south to Fort McMurray. It’s worth a stop to admire these amazing and enormous machines once used in the oil sands which can also be seen en route

I've seen this monstrous machine on more than one occasion that's pretty cool too see how they used to do things in the olden days, it's north of Fort McMurray not far from syncrude and I would suggest if you're in the area go have a look.

This site is about a 30 minute drive north of Fort McMurray. There is no charge to enter the display park and machine exhibits are astonishing. The sheer size of the equipment and the complexity of the engineering involved is simply unbelievable. In our travels, we have only very rarely seen anything so amazing and huge!

Make sure to visit the re-mediation site display with the bison across the highway while you are there.

I have lived in Alberta all my life and have been through the boom and bust effects on our economy but had never visited Ft. Mac. The display was really interesting and impressive. As we walked and took photos we could hear the guns go off the scare the birds. You could see The Syncrude site which is massive. Liked how the machinery were treated like antiques and displayed with pride. Really cool.

A great place to take visitors to see some of the history of the region. You get to see the size and scope of industry. You can also walk inside of a bucket and take pics.

It was a long drive up to see this. Ok for a picnic place. The kids were amazed for 5 minutes and then got bored.
