I love little local museums because you meet nice local staff and can learn a lot about the local community. This one is a great one because it has a lot of detailed info on various events that has shaped the local community. Great and knowledgeable staff too.

This is a lovely small local museum run by folks passionate about their community. Admission is by donation and they sell a booklet that describes all the mural artwork located throughout the village. If you look carefully you could spend at least a few hours looking over the collection of local and historical artifacts. There are a few things for the kids to look at, but they might not have the patience to look at the treasures here.

My friend and I dropped in here today and had a wonderful, impromptu tour by one of the enthusiastic volunteers. His love for his town shone through!

only a small museum, but has some very interesting things in it. Notice the carvings on the outside of the building also.

I haven't been in the Museum since the expansion and it is very well done!
If you are lucky Bill, a Decorated Korean War Veteran, will be your guide or you can do a self guided tour.
How many museums have an old time punch clock from the 1920's? The time punch clock was from the sawmill.
They have a recording of the loudest steam engine in Canada, I can attest to this because my relatives could hear it on Saltspring Island back in the day.
If you are interested in genealogy they have school photos from the earliest schools there too!
A beautiful curated display of nursing through the ages. Do you know why nurses caps had different coloured bands on them? Not going to tell. You'll have to visit.
Well worth a visit!
Price is my donation and the lovely lady behind the counter makes the most delightful crocheted animals.

We spent a week in Nanaimo, and each day we ventured out to different areas in the region. The little museum is full of local nostalgia, and full of local Mounties memorabilia, etc.

The entrance fee is nominal, but in reality it's a donation. The ladies at the front were happy to engage in a conversation and we learned more about the local area.

Don't need more than one hour.

Do not expect big city museum...I found this one interesting and with exhibits that were well-sourced. I also went to the small local museums in Nanaimo (best), Ladysmith (2nd best), Chemainus (3rd), Qualicum Bay (4th)--though each was interesting in their own way

The Chemanus Valley Museum is a smallish typical local history museum --- not likely to be of great interest to non-locals, but certainly worthwhile if you are already there. However, the complex in which it is housed is very well done and has much to offer. Lotsa free parking. There is a Visitor Center where you can get a free map of the town, showing the locations of the murals (they'll try to sell you a $3 booklet, but the free map is good enough if your interest is moderate). Some of the murals (particularly those in "Old Town") will probably require driving --- but many (perhaps most) are within a few blocks. There are nice clean restrooms. There is a viewpoint for a large lumbermill. There is a beautiful little public park (Waterwheel Park), with picnic tables.
