We live in Kelowna in Black Mountain and we try to bring all of our guests to the restaurant for at least one meal during their stay.
The vegan calamari and salmon are always a winner. The staff are always friendly and Stephen, the owner, if he’s around, will stop off at your table just to say hi. The organic Pinot Gris is very distinctive with an almost golden colour and it is very aromatic.
So why only a 4 star you ask. Communications when trying to make a reservation are next to zero. We have been turned away at the door because no one would pick up the telephone at the restaurant so we would drive down to the restaurant but we would always have a back up destination in mind which many times we have had to go to.
I suggest that maybe they could have a calendar on their web site for when they are hosting larger events to save guests from driving down and being turned away and disappointed.
Last night (25th) as usual the food was amazing and Lynne our server was great extremely personal, friendly and knowledgeable. Her manager was also there at a table and she took her ( The only server) away from her duties for an extended period of time to talk about work and this took her away from her duties so we just sat patiently and waited for her to finish so we could leave. We could here all of their conversation and it was quite peculiar that they would have a work update at the tables in a fine restaurant when we sat just 2 tables away.
Either way the food, wine and service was as always a solid 10, with the season winding down maybe Stephen and his mgmt team can look at their reservation process and the ability to communicate to customers if the restaurant is booked out for private events and therefore no walk in customers would be permitted.
Not the cheapest place in town but worth the trip. We will see you soon and hopefully they will post shortly if the restaurant is remaining open this winter season.
Great job Stephen

We bypassed the wine tasting as we were wanting to have a glass of wine and food on the deck overlooking the gorgeous views. We ordered the charcuterie for $42.00 and while edible it was overpriced for the tiny bit we received and the toast was everyday bread you would use for a child’s pb&j sandwich. The rose wine was lovely and I would go back to enjoy a glass on the deck but I would not order food. We also did not like preordering our selection at the cash register as it seemed impersonal and no one was there for 10 minutes. It was also self serve water service. This winery definitely does not make guests feel welcomed or special.

I had a wonderful time visiting Summerhill, their story, culture and products are simply amazing. I ordered some wine to be shipped all the way across the country in Québec and they delivered efficiently and amazingly fast. I would visit every weekend if it wasn’t for the 5000km distance. I strongly recommend Summerhill to anyone of all ages visiting the beautiful paradise on earth that is the Okanagan valley.

This was the wine tasting that we enjoyed the least. There is no tasting fee but we did not care for any of the wines. The server was taking care of our table as well as another table and did not really take time to give us much of an explanation on any of the wines. She was just rushing us through.
We would not serve some of the wines that they were serving, they were that bad and also pricey for the quality.
This is a definite miss.

Summerhill winery Feb 19/24:
Daniel Poured our wines today, this man is a wealth of knowledge about this wineries offerings. If you’re able to, consider visiting the wineries during the off-season. This afford you extra time with the tasting room, staff, where they sometimes spend more time with you talking about the winery, how things got started… What set them apart, or makes them unique more special, amongst all the other wineries out there. For instance, Summerhill wineries commitment to organically produced wine and sustainability. They take pains to do things right here, and the amount of metals that their wines win are a testament to their tremendous efforts.
Wine tasting included their Chardonnay, followed by their pinot Noir, then their Cabernet franc, then the Keter wine whose label includes the cabal tree of life. This is also a whose label includes the cabal tree of life. This is also a very good wine very good wine. We ended up with a very good Spadefoot Toad Syrah this is one of my favorite red wines in this region.
Consider this a must visit winery when you visit the Okanagan.

Not sure what has happened to what use to be a classy and quality winery???!!! We live in the neighbourhood and often visit Summerhill Winery when guests are in town. There is nothing classy anymore. There use to be an excellent wait staff. Had lots of great interactions and fun. Now you have to order your own food at the front. We waited over 10 minutes an no one greeted us or said 'hello". They were not able to accommodate minor food sensitivities (i.e. gluten friendly or dairy friendly) as meals are no longer prepared fresh in house. They are now prepped offsite. Our guest could not eat anything on the menu so we had to leave. Prior to leaving we did try the Calamari appetizer. We were served a plate of deep fried batter...Calamari pieces were so thin and small you could barely see them and all you tasted was oil. We asked it the change was due to staff shortages and were told, "No, management is trying something new." We would like to confirm that your new plan is definitely NOT WORKING. So disappointing!!!

I am encouraging people not to frequent Summerhill Winery or Summerhill Pyramid Winery in Kelowna. I booked a reservation three weeks in advance for the outdoor dining area for 11 of us (One table is six and one table of five ). We emphasized that it is the outdoor area we would like to be seated in. The person that took my reservation confirmed that we would have outside tables In the outside patio area. One week before our reservation we got a call from the Summerville Pyramid Winery and they informed us that they will not be honoring our reservation and we could not have outside dining for that night. They decided to cancel our reservation as they had a larger group that wanted to book the outside area. And as I mentioned we went through great lengths to stress that it is the outside dining area we would need to have dinner there. Obviously the almighty dollar is more important to them than honoring a reservation commitment. I encourage you not to frequent this restaurant as if this is the way they treat their customers then you might wanna question all their other practices when they serve their customers. For better suggestions for winery restaurants in Kelowna I encourage you to try Quails Gate Winery, Mission Hill Winery and Cedar Creek Winery. All have fabulous restaurants with fabulous food and they know how to treat their customers honorably.

Fantastic, unique place. Reserved a spot for the “experience tour” despite little information on their website, and I would HIGHLY recommend it. Was toured around the vineyards by highly knowledgeable and passionate tour guide Samantha who told us the history of the winery, answered all of our questions (even the more obscure ones) and showed us inside the quirky Summerhill pyramid, where wine is stored to ferment. The tour included a tasting (free even without the tour) which we felt was not rushed at all and really really enjoyable. The bistro was also fantastic - all of the food is organic and very fresh, and we lucked out on outdoor seats overlooking both the vineyards and the lake with beautiful rolling hills in the distance.

On the face of it Summer Hill has all the ingredients to be wonderful restaurant and experience; the view is stunning and the wine is great although unfortunately the same can’t be said for the service, and I can only echo and add to recent negative reviews. The service is utterly awful. Our server from the get go was passive and disinterested, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere. We continued the evening ignoring that and working our way to the mains. We noticed on arrival of the food a mistake had been made having been sent tofu instead of halloumi, disappointing but an easy fix. When our server (finally) came back to check on us we informed him of this mistake. Without even checking, he told us we were wrong, we tried to be polite and suggested he check with the chef. Another 10 minutes later after checking on multiple tables he returned with the same dismissive response (we got the impression he forgot about us). My fiancé and I have been vegetarian for 5 years and we are from a Greek Cypriot family so to try and sell us tofu instead of halloumi is almost comical.
After our complaints fell on deaf ears we were keen to leave the restaurant quickly, again our server ignored us, we waited for the bill and for him to eventually swan over with the card machine in some kind of pathetic power play. When we finally settled up my fiancé told him how disappointed we were with the experience and he just shrugged his shoulders.
We left disappointed and soured, the next day we called the manager she was initially great and understanding. She offered for us to return in an attempt to rectify the situation, we refused (it would have been to uncomfortable) so instead she suggested complimentary wine. We agreed since that felt a happy compromise, she told us to email her to let her know when we would be around to pick up. We did; later that day we received an email informing she had ‘spoken to higher ups and reviewed the situation ‘ and would now only be offering a discount on any wine we might purchase.
The idea this was a fix for the evening was again laughable.
Take in the view somewhere else and spare yourself the unsavoury encounter.

My family and I travelled from Toronto to Edmonton, Banff to Kelowna. We were excited to enjoy some lunch and do some wine tasting at Summerhill Winery. We walked in as online I had some issues trying to make a reservation and it was stated online that walk-in was welcomed.
When we arrived, we waited a bit before we were acknowledged by a staff member. The Bistro was not busy. The host asked do you have a reservation as we don’t take walk ins.
I explained I had issues online and she said try and make reservations online you may get it, you may not. I was able to make reservations for 2pm it was 1:45pm. Another guest came in and it didn’t look like they had reservations and the host took them right away to be seated. The host came later and I showed her the reservations and she said come back at 2pm. It states to arrive 10 minutes before reservation on our confirmation. At this point we can feel that we were being treated poorly and felt segregated. We no longer wanted to eat here. I am south Asian and my husband was Eastern European never in our lives have we been poorly treated. We didn’t wear flashy clothes, nor did we look messy. My family and I decided to take our business elsewhere-I have been to many wineries around the world: France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, in Ontario and have never been treated like this. Absolutely disgusting service. When I went back to share my feedback and asked for the manager of the Bistro it was the host that we were dealing with the whole time. She didn’t care if we left and didn’t try to make an effort to welcome our business.
If you want to support a place that’s discriminatory and feel segregated, then this is for you, otherwise please take my advice and take your hard earned dollars and business elsewhere.

Dear Sivaranjanio,
I am saddened you had this experience with us. I was in the bistro that day and I wish I could have helped better. Please understand this is not who we are or what are business is. We should have gone out of our way to make you feel comfortable. We may not have been busy, but we were understaffed so were pacing tables differently. This should have been explained to you better. There are so many things we should have done better in honouring you. Please know we will spend more time with our staff training them so that no one feels discriminated against.
Sincerely, Jeremy Luypen, Food & Beverage Director

Is there an outdoor area to eat that our dog can be near us? Or outdoor wine tasting?
Thanks
Written August 1, 2019
Yes! Summerhill allows dogs, we actually had our dog arrive after the ceremony for some photos. He just wasn't allowed inside the winery. In the summer they have an outdoor tasting bar and a food truck!
Written August 21, 2019
Hi Lyndsay, we're on leash dog friendly, yes, but unfortunately dogs can't come into the wine shop or restaurant. From time to time guests tie up a dog in our shaded entry and we put out a bowl of water.

Can we just stop in and explore the grounds and do a tasting, without booking a tour? We plan to arrive around 1pm but there isn't a tour until 2pm (and we have lunch reservations at 2:30pm elsewhere so can't stay). Thanks in advance!
Written May 9, 2017
Absolutely. You are welcome anytime. The grounds are open to explore and the tasting bar welcomes walk-in tastings from 9 am - 7 pm everyday.

Hello, planning a visit to your winery in early July and would like to know if you have a bed and breakfast on site as well. Also, do you by any chance allow children (10 & 8 ) to do the tour?
Written May 11, 2015
Hello Colleen,
We do not have a B&B but friends of ours own and operate A Touch of English B&B, which you can find on the web (we are not allowed to post URLs in these replies) This is in downtown Kelowna and we consistently hear very good reviews.
We do absolutely welcome children on tours.
Yours,
Ezra Cipes
