This is a great walking path around a marsh with large ponds. Excellent birdwatching site - great blue heron, mallard, Canada goose, yellow-crowned sparrow, spotted towhee, bufflehead, ring necked duck, woodpeckers, bushtits, chickadees, etc.
Parking at the north end is limited because of the dense housing units. There are several viewing towers along the walk. Highly recommended

Buttertubs Marsh is a discreet slice of paradise between a highway and residential area. It's really lovely visually and often you can spot an assortment of birds which is pretty neat. The best thing about Buttertubs and the walk is the flat land, which makes it a much easier walk for the average person, no hills or hiking required. It also doesn't take too long to walk around, which can be nice as it doesn't feel daunting to make your way. I feel totally safe going for a walk there by myself, but it's also nice to take a walk with a friend or family member to catch up. It also tends to be less busy than some of the more popular spots, I think even locals sometimes overlook it.

Friends shared this delightful outdoor adventure! Have to know what you’re looking for because it’s in a residential area so check a map/GPS-well sign posted when you get close. Lots of parking and before you talk this walk, an outhouse is available. 2.4 km around the circle. Well packed trail/wide for side by side in either direction. Look out towers to view birds, endangered turtles, water lilies, bulrushes and marsh lands.
Very accessible for anyone with walking issues and recommend good shoes and socks. Can do a race walk, stroll along to take pictures or sit on benches provided along the route to just listen to the birds!!! A paradise!
We absolutely loved our visit here! Recommend for all ages and abilities.

Buttertubs marsh has a winding trail that meanders around the marsh for probably a couple of miles. There a viewing platforms around the marsh and the occasional wildlife. Parking can be a problem at times as it is adjacent to housing.

Buttertubs Marsh is situated near a major highway and residential areas, yet it is so relaxing and feels like a world away. Nice level walk to do, with some viewing platforms to observe any wildlife that you may come across.

It's a marsh and really nothing more. Nature within the city.
Listen to some birds and see birds. Some people may enjoy more than I did. Wish I would have saw a turtle.
I wouldn't come back, as I would rather walk the harbour for sites and sounds.

We enjoy this walk, lots of marshland wildlife, easy flat walk, a little muddy in the rainy seasons.
All ages can walk or run this. It's mostly stroller friendly unless you have a small wheeler. Lots of parking and toilets at the start/finish of the loop. Not unsafe for single walkers.

Today, we went for another 2 Kg walk around Buttertubs Marsh. It was too early in the season for the water iris to be blooming. But, we saw red-winged blackbirds.& heard their songs. A young great blue heron posed at the waters edge. We saw mallards & Canada geese on the water. Along the trail we saw lots of plump robins, varied thrush, & rock pigeons. Black squirrels scampered back & forth across the path was we walked. What a lovely early spring walk!

A 2km circle route around a bird sanctuary in central Nanaimo. Dogs are NOT allowed and neither are bikes. The trail is flat, gravel, and well-maintained with a few benches along the way. There are three wooden viewing towers as well.
This walk is often mentioned in any publication about walks in Nanaimo. It can be a nice stroll for a senior who is looking for an easy walk, but I find it rather dull. For someone who is interested in bird watching, this is the most basic common birds you will find. Herons, red winged blackbirds, a few ducks and occassionally something else. Nothing too picturesque here. No water enters the marsh, so the birds and fish are limited. Winter is the best time to go, in the summer the tall grasses block most of the view of the marsh. Unfortunately daphne, hawthorne, broom and periwinkle are dominant throughout the walk.
If you are looking for something more interesting Bowen Park is very close and offers better scenery and flora.
