About
Nanaimo's Old City Quarter is part of the original economic core of the city. Buildings in the area date from the late 1800s to early 1900s. The map shows the area's boundaries. The Old City Quarter has undergone a revitalization of heritage buildings along with the addition of new developments which complement the period architecture. A revitalization program in the early 1980s attracted upmarket retailers. There are over 20 restaurants and 30 shops in the area, as well as professional services and the historic train station. The success and growth of this area as a destination shopping, business and dining area with the charm of yesterday resulted in the formation of the Old City Quarter Association. The association was incorporated in April,1993. The goal of the association is to collectively administer and coordinate the improvement, promotion and awareness of the Old City Quarter as a unique destination.

We stopped here to check out the Old Quarter. There were some nice shops an older building in the area, but a lot of the buildings had been upgraded and were modernize into commercial establishments, which to me seemed to distract from being the “Old Quarter”

For those who appreciate history, the Old City Quarter is a vast treasure trove just waiting to be explored. With buildings dating from the late 1800s to early 1900s, the architecture alone is enough to merit many a re-visit; however, this historic district is much more than a mere one-trick pony. Its cobbled walkways are home to an eclectic collection of some 20 restaurants and 30 shops. Individually, they represent something of a hodgepodge – bakeries, pasta restaurants, bookstores, law offices and tattoo shops, for example – but together they’re indicative of what Lonely Planet has referred to as a “hood of independence” and help to give the Old City Quarter its charm. Indeed, the general ambiance of place and space reminds me of walking betwixt and between the Jellybean houses of Newfoundland.

As you amble along these historic streets, do take your time because you never know what treasures might be uncovered. Will you find a hidden gem of a restaurant? Or how about some new age trinket? The collection of shops within the Old City Quarter is so random, yet clearly demonstrative of how this area represents both a cultural hub and economic core of Nanaimo. If you have at least an hour or so, take the brief walk up from the Coast Bastion (on Bastion Street) and immerse yourself in this quirky yet fun slice of yesteryear.

Interesting local shops and restaurants in this quarter make it a nice place to visit. It didn’t seem overly hectic, just a nice relaxed pace. None of the shops are chains which is a nice change. Great yarn shop, women’s clothing, and specialty children’s clothing. Many more.

two seniors who don't have lots of energy to walk the area; but we drove it and did several blocks returning to a few. We hit this area after walking too much in the harbour front area, otherwise we would have taken the time here. A little cool and windy in October.

Not sure if most of the stores were closed on sunday but the area was pretty quiet except for a handful of people walking around. Don't know if the locals head there or whether it's just a tourist area. It does however look very nice.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a rating for the Old City Quarter. Usually, the majority of the stores and restaurants are open on Sundays, however, if you were passing through on the Labour Day weekend, many would have been closed. We hope you visit again!

The area is very nice. Small boutiques, and some of the best restaurants in the city. Far safer than it might look at night.
