With a dedication to quality and a respect for the terroir, Painted Rock ensures that each grape is of superior quality, proving that the best wines are made in the vineyard. Painted Rock's latest addition is the spectacular new tasting room, wedding and events facility which overlooks the estate vineyards and Skaha Lake and provides the perfect setting for any event. Painted Rock offers a patio lounge and a grassed picnic area to sit and enjoy the views and a glass of Painted Rock wine.

I've been a club member for more than a year and had the chance to taste some of the wines prior to visiting. I was looking forward to this tasting.

We tasted all of their wines and it is on the top of the list of the wines we had in the valley. The reds are soooo good and will get better if aged.

We had the chance to talk with the owner, John, for a good 10 minutes. We really appreciated this. Thanks for the chat, John.

I will definitely come back to this winery when I'm back in this region.

I visited here last year and wrote a review detailing the amazing scenery, great wine and unparalleled insect killing ability of the mysterious white haired man in the nice car who it turns out is John, the owner. Painted rock were very gracious in their response so I was encouraged to go back.

Upon our return this year, I was at first alarmed to see that we had been set up with a private tasting hosted by John himself, the very man I had made fun of in my last review. I awkwardly tried to sink into my chair and avoid eye contact, which was tricky given he was standing about two feet directly in front of me. I felt like a child who had been summoned to the headmaster. I braced myself for a telling off.

I needn’t have worried. He couldn’t have been more gracious, informative and entertaining. Above all, his absolute passion and energy for what he does shone through. His wines, and your experience when tasting it are extremely important to him - which explains why he was so passionate in removing any distractions such as buzzing wasps or bees that might lessen your experience.

Then, when spinning his stories of hobnobbing with wine royalty such as Jan Robinson or Steven Spurrier, he introduced some of his cellar wines to try. The results were spectacular in a way that can only be achieved by someone who is very serious about what they do. This man is really, really into his wine and it shows. After days of tasting wine, these just stand out from the rest.

This is my favourite wine stop in the Okenagan. Great wine, great scenery, great people. This time there wasn’t even a single wasp to be seen outside to spoil the occasion. I think they might all be scared.

Unwelcoming from the moment we walked in so we didn’t stay. There are many other beautiful wineries to visit in this area that are also happy to invite you in. Find another.

Hi Erin, I’m very sorry you didn’t feel welcome when you arrived. I have spoken with our team at length and my understanding is that we didn’t have any room to accommodate you as there wasn’t a reservation and we were fully booked. I’m very sorry for any disappointment. We offer tastings by reservation to try to avoid any disappointment by visitors though I appreciate that this is different from other wineries who always have space available for walk-ins. We are a small, family run winery and want to offer the best experience to all of our visitors and I’m sorry you didn’t feel welcome. Sincerely, Lauren Skinner and the Painted Rock team

This is an outstanding winery and vineyard. Set on the bench above Skaha Lake, their tasting room offer expansive views of the landscape and the lake. There is a beautiful patio with generous seating.

Charcutier boards are available to enjoy with your wine.

A great date afternoon for couples.

There could not be a more beautiful setting. We expected Hugh Grant to show up. Amazingly, the wine lives up to the setting. We cannot recommend this winery highly enough. Great staff and service with stunning views. Well worth a serious detour. We will be back.

I love this classy, modern and friendly winery. The wine is lovely and the people are so friendly and knowledgeable.
We had a picnic on the lawn overlooking the vineyard and lake. Heaven!

First off let me say that if you want fantastic wine at an amazing location the this place is for you. This place has quite possibly the best reds in the Okanagen and is always one of the true highlights of our annual trip to the area.

This last visit was a bit strange however.

We stopped by and sat outside on the patio, first for a tasting, then afterwards we ordered a bottle of rose that we greatly enjoyed.

At this point a particularly nice car pulled up and a white haired gentleman stepped out brandishing what looked to be a pair of miniature tennis rackets. I assume from the car that he was the owner, although he may have been some eccentric rich local.

He stood next to one of the other tables and began swinging the rackets wildly around his head, a slightly crazed look in his eye. He was apparently protecting the occupants of the table from insects, which I suppose is fair enough if they are being bothered by them. He then stomped his way round the patio, finishing off the wounded and kicking them to the side like the insect hooligans that they were.

It was at this point that he apparently decided that if these insects want a war, then a war they would get, and that he would take the fight to them. He strode off into the bushes with the look of a man on a mission. We were surrounded by dozens of these bushes, but there were two that particularly drew his ire.

He swung again and again, taking out any unsuspecting bee, wasp or decorative plant unwise enough to stray into his path. It was a massacre.

Eventually, he was spent. He trudged back to the patio, half blind from sweat, his shoulders slumped.

“I like to turn off the electricity on these things” he said to one table, nodding at his murder racquet. “Kills ‘em better”. “I think I got 100 of them.” he winked at another, before jauntily springing back into his particularly nice car and speeding off. What a guy!

So as I said, this is place offers amazing wine and is a fantastic place to visit. As long as you are not a bee or a wasp.

Well, this is without a doubt the most entertaining review I have ever read. Clearly John’s passion for protecting patio visitors from the pesky wasps was a little over zealous this day! And yes, John is the owner of Painted Rock. Thank you for your kind remarks about the wines and location, I hope next visit you are able to relax without the wild wasp hunt distraction. Please let us know when you’re coming next, a bottle of Rosé is on me for the pure entertainment this review provided. Cheers, Lauren Skinner (John’s daughter and Director of Sales & Marketing for Painted Rock)

We loved our patio picnic lunch at Painted Rock. An amazing view with their amazing rose was the highlight of our day. Book your trip soon before they run out of their rose

We had not heard of Painted Rock until we were looking for wineries to visit near Penticton. What a fantastic location with gorgeous views over Skaha Lake while you taste the wines. We shared a charcuterie plate while we tasted, which made it more interesting.
The wines were gorgeous and will age well I think. We liked them so much we joined their red wine club.

I made reservations based on the photos of many tables outside for tastings but was surprised to be told that the tasting I had booked would be indoors at a bar with our backs to the beautiful view and with all but one of the large doors to the outside closed.
Since my dentist passed away from Covid19, I am perhaps more cautious than most, but I was surprised that there was not more air circulation in the tasting room given that they had to only open the big sliding doors. Wanting to be outside due to Covid19, we insisted on a table outside and agreed to wait until a table was available. It seemed very backwards to us that in these COVID times a reservation only entitles you to an indoor table when we are told by Dr. Bonnie Henry that it is safer to be outside.
Luckily it did not take long to get a table and view was breathtaking.
I was using wine tasting sheets that I had made myself in an effort to help me identify aromas and flavours since I am a visual person, but I was a little put off when the server said she dislikes sheets like mine. Normally I am encouraged by servers who see that I am trying to learn and not just guzzle their wine.
For this visit we only tried their reds and we both really enjoyed the 2017 Red Icon and bought some to add to our cellers.

Hi! Thank you very much for leaving your review. Firstly, let me sincerely apologize for the staff member who said they disliked your tasting sheet. That is completely inappropriate and I agree, they can be very helpful! I use mine all the time when I am tasting new wines. I also completely understand your confusion with the indoor tasting reservations. I will do my best to explain the reasoning. Because of our location and exposure, when the weather is nice the patio is spectacular. When the wind picks up though, it has the strength to rip our umbrellas out of the ground. This means that some days when the heat is blazing and the wind is up, we cannot put the umbrellas up and tastings outdoors can be quite uncomfortable. Likewise when it begins to rain and there is wind, we do not have any permanent structure that will offer rain protection outside. For this reason we wanted to make sure that every reservation was able to be comfortably accommodated, no matter the weather. Our intention was to then offer patio tables on a first come, first serve basis. We appreciate there was disappointment with this and we are working on a new plan for 2021. As 2020 was our first season offering reservations we did our best but will learn from all the feedback we received. Additionally, we do have an air filtration system which was working indoors and we had plexi glass between all pourers and tasters and barriers to ensure social distancing between groups indoors. When the temperatures get high keeping the doors open all the time can lead to temperature fluctuations indoors when our A/C cannot keep up. This can potentially harm the wine stored inside. I am glad to hear you enjoyed the 2017 Red Icon and I hope you will visit again soon! Cheers, Lauren
