When it opened in 1974, the Pine Centre Mall was described as the “largest shopping centre in Canada’s northland” and it had some 40 shops at the time. Fast forward to 2018, and Pine Centre sits at nearly 100 shops and remains – to this day – a proverbial beehive of activity. From a social perspective, the fact that Pine Centre remains fairly active is somewhat remarkable, especially since we live in an era and age where Amazon is king and the “box store” and mall have been seen as being on the decline. In many places this is indeed true; however, the Pine Centre isn’t just any mall. It is a space that fashions itself as an “enclosed regional shopping centre” – one that aims to suit the needs of “the North” and the people who live here. And it does so through a mix of local stores + national chains + community driven initiatives. In this way, people get their big city fix while at the same time doing so in a space that is distinctly Prince George.

Even after 40+ years, Pine Centre is still northern BC’s largest shopping mall. In that time, though, it has undergone – and continues to undergo – significant change. Stores come and go all the time; some downsize; others expand; and, indeed, some even return. At times, this happens in a fairly brief period of time. When I visited Pine Centre a short while ago, for the first time in a few years, I was surprised at the level of change that had occurred. Sears had departed (after over 40 years of tenancy), the food court was remodeled and had a few new tenants, Great White had vanished and the House of Knives had appeared. I’m sure there were other noteworthy changes, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind. The point is that the Pine Centre, like any major mall, is an ever shifting and evolving space. Sure, the overall design and “look” of the mall may look somewhat dated, but it is ever changing.

What makes this mall stand out for me is how all-encompassing it is. There is literally something here for everybody: a play area for little ones; many a fashion shop for the fashionistas amongst us; hobby stores for the geeky (kidding); and specialty stores like Davids Tea and Stickys Candy, to name but a few. As well, the food court is impressive for such a small a mall: A&W, Booster Juice, Edo, KFC/Taco Bell, New York Fries (though I do miss London Fries), OPA!, Starbucks, Subway, Tim Hortons, and Tandoori Nation. Such a selection helps to move the overall shopping experience closer from “average” to “very good.”

With ample parking and a history that is reflective of Prince George, Pine Center mall is a place where one can not only find great shopping deals (love their winter “snowflake shopping package!”), but also find a sense of community and that, I think, is what has allowed Pine Centre to continue to do as well as it has. But don’t just take my word for it – check them out!

PS: I hear Browns Socialhouse is coming to the mall soon. Yum!

Typical mall with the usual chain stores. Nothing special…unless you live in a small northern town that doesn’t have those options.

While I waited in my truck, my wife find some good clothes for herself shopping at this mall. Life goes so much better, when my wife uncovers a place that sells her style of clothing.

Lots of parking. Basic mall with lowes and sportchek as the anchor tenants. A basic food court. Good on a rainy day. Covers off the basic shopping.
