We would rate Into the Vineyards as a 10+! Sara listened critically to what we wanted from a trip to Bordeaux, the Loire Valley and Burgundy and facilitated a spectacular trip that involved multiple vineyards, incredible lunches and visits to amazing sights - all of the planning with uniformly excellent guides and boutique hotels was accomplished in less than two months! The trip was seamless. They provide a list of recommended restaurants and would help with reservations if needed ( we did that on our own but started with their list of largely Michelin Star establishments. ) Into the Vineyards provides the experience that you are paying for- we were very, very pleased with their attention to detail and quality and have recommended them to friends. Would most certainly use their services again

We recently returned from three weeks in Croatia and Slovenia that was organised and planned by Kevin and his team from Into The Vinyard. Personal drivers, hotel and restaurant reservations and places to visit were all scheduled ahead by Kevin. Down to minor details with a contact person at every stop made this a relaxing and stress free experience. I would highly recommend Into The Vinyard for any travel arrangements you require.

We truly had a wonderful experience on our Italian adventure in Sorrento, Tuscany & Rome. Sarah & Allesandra designed a custom trip for us. The pace of the trip was excellent. We had enough time at each destination to feel that we explored the area but not so much that we would not want to return to see more. The travel days were very comfortable and we got to our destinations with a good amount of energy and some time to explore.

All of the accommodations exceeded expectations. The owners of Sorrento Stylish Rooms(Libera & Mimmo) and staff at the other hotels were excellent sources of information. We got superb dining suggestions from all of them. Our favorite room was the Francesco Di Giorgio Martini Suite at Il Battistero in Siena. I also need to mention Hotel Mellini - it can be hard to find an optimal location in a big city - but this was right on target. We could walk to the Colosseum and the Vatican and the local dining options were excellent.

Into the Vineyard arranged guided tours with Rosemary (Pompeii), Allesandra (Florence), Michelle and Sara (Castel Gandolfo & Frascati) & Alvise (Rome) They were first class guides. Our cooking class in Florence with Nicola was delightful. Joseph, Leonardo, Michael, Andrea, Edward & and our driver for the day in Frascati were excellent drivers. They were informative and very safe in the variable Italian driving conditions.

Of course, you also want our opinion on the wine experience. The Chianti wineries of Poggio Torselli and Rocce de Macie are the highest quality Chianti wines we have ever had. We have an extensive background in Burgundy, so we know exactly the strategy of the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione classification but we were not familiar with that until this trip. We took advantage of their shipping to the USA but we also purchased items like olive oil and grappa to bring home ourselves. Patrizia Cencioni and Altisino in Montalcino are high quality boutique wineries. We really enjoy these kinds of wineries. In Montepulciano, Boscarelli is a world class wine producer - we only can say 'thank you' for introducing us. Cantina de Ricci is more tourist oriented but they live up to all expectations. It seems like their caves extend deep into the hill of Montepulciano. The final winery on our tour was De Sanctis in Frascati. This whole day offered a perfect syncopation to our time in Rome. We needed a bre-ak from the bar-oque. Finally, a return to the 21st century. We were able to contact a USA wine retailer to get some of Luigi’s wines.

The season was quite delightful. Many of the (native) English speaking people we met were students in Italy or there for business. There were a lot of Italian tourists especially in Florence and Rome. We had dinner accompanied by a birthday party for an eight year old (I wanted to ask for a balloon at the end of dinner) and we saw four generations dining at several restaurants. But I am certain the crowds are much smaller than is seen in the high seasons.

“Excellence in Travel Plan Details” should be the standard of every premier travel company, with an emphasis on the details. For our trip to Italy, the travel company— “Into the Vineyard” (ITV) fell short of this goal in a number of respects.
Together with West Coast friends, the four of us (2 couples) annually schedule a wine-oriented trip. We plan our trips around personalized winery visits and special or unique winery experiences. We also dedicate time to explore the local culture and communities.

Trip Planning
Based upon recommendations from friends (prior ITV clients), we decided to evaluate having ITV arrange a custom wine trip to Italy during the latter half of September, 2023. We proceeded as follows:
• Introductory Zoom meeting with Into the Vineyard’s Colin Simpson in February, 2023 to discuss our travel focus and expectations. We indicated our goal of booking a 2-week trip starting in Tuscany, having a short stopover in Florence and then onto the Piedmont region. We emphasized our preference for small group wine tastings with discussions regarding the winery, its history, and winemaking style. Colin was a strong salesperson, who noted his organization (ITV) was very experienced in delivering the type of custom, personalized wine tour we were seeking. Colin highlighted the theme currently presented in ITV’s webpage statement: “…experience which offers an intimate and luxurious journey...”
• Following this meeting, we proceeded with payment of the initial retainer in ITV’s process to develop a trip sketch. Once the basic outline was developed, we had further Zoom discussions to agree on a final trip proposal & contract in March, 2023.
• Very little transpired after that point until Alessandra Corno became our primary point of contact with ITV in late May 2023. As there were important details (transportation, specific wineries to be visited, etc.) that had yet to be nailed down, the lack of scheduling progress was disappointing to us. As we attempted to finalize details between May and August, ITV continually assured us they were working on it and we should not be concerned.
• Ultimately, several details of our trip agenda were not finalized/confirmed until 2 weeks before our mid-September departure. This final itinerary included a significant number of changes from our original detailed trip presentation/agenda.

Trip Overview
We would rate our trip about a 6 - 7 out of 10. We did have a very good overall trip with our great traveling friends and the experiences were – for the most part – very positive. However, as the saying goes, “…the devil is in the details”. Fortunately, we were able to make changes/modifications locally and “on the fly” in Italy to overcome some of the initial shortcomings that were encountered.

Trip Negatives
The overall trip shortcomings may be attributed to several factors including:
• Obvious gaps in ITV communications with the different independent tour companies/guides. One jarring example, our scheduled personalized intimate tastings began in Tuscany with a group tasting of 14 and this was followed by other tastings with group sizes of 8-10.
• Late finalization of the trip details and lack of key ITV inputs impacted the selection of the hotel (Locanda del Pilone) outside of Alba, Piedmont. The hotel was lovely, however, while ITV provided Alba restaurant recommendations along with the input that the hotel could easily arrange transportation to Alba for our dinner choices,---- an important fact omitted was the cost of each round trip to Alba was a minimum of 100 Euros and there were no other nearby dining options . Our decision to work with local, independent Piedmont guides to enhance our lunch selections resulted in excellent multi-course menus/food pairings with local wine in great settings during our Piedmont touring. Unfortunately, however, we cancelled all our Alba dinner reservations and opted to just enjoy some interesting wine, cheeses & sausages in the evening. If we had the time prior to arriving in Italy, selecting a simple hotel in Alba would have also provided some opportunity to experience the charms of this local city which is the location for an international white truffle market each fall.
• Enhanced and more specific information on particular mid-day stops would have improved our experience, particularly in Tuscany. For example, in Tuscany, we often had 1 – 2 hours in small towns for lunch and sight-seeing. It would have been beneficial if the local guide or ITV provided some basic information from their expertise regarding each town -- such as a town map, suggestions on selected restaurants/cafes points of interest, etc. Instead, we were dropped off and advised to be at the pick-up point in 1-2 hours, and “have a good time.”

Standout Experiences
• Tasting experiences in Piedmont were outstanding and far superior to those in Tuscany. Winery hosts were better, tours were better, and food/wine pairings were excellent.
• In Piedmont, the day of the white truffle hunt with farmer/ wine maker Gino and his family was absolutely the highlight of the trip. Following the truffle hunt (successful by the way), Gino’s wife prepared an amazing five course meal in a simple setting. The wine pairings were excellent. When we remember this vacation, this is one day we will always reminisce about.
• Our private wine tasting with the small family winemakers were the most interesting.
• Our Tuscany hotel located on the edge of Montalcino provided us an opportunity to enjoy amazing dinners at two small local family restaurants.

Opinion
An impression we developed after our experience with ITV - it would seem ITV developed a very successful, niche wine tour business focused on creating small group, highly personalized experiences. This capability may now be impacted by the lack of adequate resources and established business processes to deliver consistent excellence in an expanded business environment. Our experience indicates, with the resources currently available at ITV, promoting standardized group departures may be a better description of ITV’s capability.
Unusual Disappointment
Upon returning from Italy, we offered to have a short Zoom with Colin and Alessandra to discuss the highlights and difficulties experienced during our trip. We never received any type of response from ITV.

My husband and I had our dream vacation to Italy and planned it through Into the Vineyard. We explored Venice, Florence, and then on to Tuscany for wine tasting. Every detail of the trip was customized for us. Paolo had several discovery calls with us to find out what we liked to do, our food preferences, hobbies, and vacation goals. All of the information shared on the calls, created our Custom Italy Wine Itinerary.

Our trip was incredible. It included many private winery tours, our own driver and tour guide Andrea (who was fabulous), tours of medieval towns, two cooking classes, and some days that we had nothing planned but exploring beautiful Tuscany. It was the vacation of a lifetime for us. We cannot wait to plan our next vacation with Paolo and his team at Into the Vineyard.

We just returned from our third trip with Into the Vineyard. This trip explored the Piedmont region, Lake Como, the Franciacorta wine region, and Venice. Every detail was well thought out and personalized based on our previous two trips. We visited 10 wineries, ranging from small family wineries producing great wines to larger wineries that export to the US.

Our visit was during harvest time and it was amazing to see the controlled chaos of hand harvesting whole hillsides of vines. When our wine guide found that I liked white wines, he altered our scheduled plans so that we could taste Arneis wines one day. Another winery opened their tasting room for us on a day they were normally closed.

Our trip also included days when we took a break from wine to appreciate beautiful historic homes, gardens, and churches. Our itinerary took us off the routing tourist path and to the Vittoriale degli Italiani on Lake Garda to a 14th century monestery in Pavia where Monks still reside. We had lunches that were booked for us at small local restaurants. The guides and drivers made sure the experiences fit us.

Even when travel doesn't go as planned, we were treated like VIPs. Our return flight was canceled on the morning of our departure. Our hotel arranged for us to keep our room and rescheduled our water taxi to the following day. Another passenger on our flight, staying at the same hotel, had to change hotels. We got to enjoy a sailboat race in Venice that we would never have experienced because everything was taken care of for us.

I have already started thinking about our next trip with Into the Vineyard. Taking away the stress of travel and working with people who know the area makes the experience so much more fufilling.

My wife and I just returned from a wonderful custom wine tour of Tuscany, Italy courtesy of the planning experts at Into The Vineyard. We learned so much about the history and culture of Tuscany. We met so many Italian wine experts that were passionate about their vineyards, wine history, and their unique winemaking. The trip details, hotels, restaurants, cooking class, drivers, and other bookings were perfectly made. It was a true please working with Paolo, Alessandra, and their expert staff at Into the Vineyard.

We worked with Madison at Into The Vineyard on our trip to Italy and France.

We already knew which cities we wanted to visit (we even had specific neighborhoods in mind for Paris). They selected hotels for us (we were specific with requests like A/C and modern amenities) in Beaune, Bordeaux, Lyon, and Paris which were all great stays.

We asked them to arrange several food and winery tours (both group and private) which were all excellent. The private tours met us at our hotels and the group tours met within walking distance to the hotels.

They arranged train tickets between cities as well as drivers in ea city that took us from the train stations to the accommodations and back again.

We found Into The Vineyard to be knowledgeable and accommodating with our specific requests and definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a very capable travel agency. We will use them again…

We had a family event in Brazil and Paulo helped us plan some post-wedding exploring in Brazil (Iguazu) and Argentina (Buenos Aires and Mendoza). There were a lot of moving parts -- not everyone had the vacation time for the whole trip, so at each step more people had to peel off. Paulo deftly handled the arrangements (internal flights & transportation, hotels, guides). The real test came when a group member had a medical emergency. His team stepped right up, rescheduling flights, cancelling tours and dinners, etc., as needed. It was very helpful to have someone handle all that (everything is fine now BTW). They even helped gather information for our travel insurance claim. We were prepared to recommend them before the trip interruption; afterward we give more than 5 stars were that an option.

This was the second tour my wife and I have arranged through Into The Vineyard, and like the first tour, it delivered everything we had hoped for and more. Yes, a 3-week custom trip with high end accommodations and extensive use of personal guides along the way is expensive, but in our opinion worth the cost as long as it provides the desired experiences. Providing those experiences is what Into The Vineyard excels at. This trip included 3 private visits to excellent family wine producers where we were the winery owner gave us insights into the wines and the connections between the wines and the local culture and history. But for this trip we did not focus on wine, instead choosing to focus on regional history, architecture, and art. In Northern Italy we toured notable architectural examples of works by Palladio, Colio, and Scarpa. We also attended three outdoor operas in the Verona arena (similar to Rome’s Colosseum), all of which were fantastic, although if we could only have gone to one, it would have been Aida, which had a cast that must have been around 400 people. Upon leaving Verona, we visited Munich, Germany, and Saltzburg and Vienna in Austria. Excellent private guides gave us both access to important sites, but also personal insights into the cities and how best to see them. The quality of the guides was universally excellent, whether the day’s focus was history, architecture, art, wine or culture (or more often all of these in combination).

Planning a tour like this requires a lot of effort and contacts. Paolo at Into The Vineyard worked with us throughout the trip development process, making sure he understood what we wanted and suggesting ways those desires could be met. In the end, some of our top memories from this tour included: An incredible tour of the Brion Tomb by Scarpa led by an incredibly knowledgeable guide, beyond the usual private tours of both the Vienna Zoo and the Spanish Riding School that gave us the opportunity to explore in ways that would have been impossible in a group tour setting, and the unforgettable Operas. But the value we received from Into The Vineyard also came from the details such as: arranging excellent accommodations and transfers, making sure that enough time was provided that we never felt pressured making connections. making sure we both had window seats on trains, obtaining excellent seats for the opera, and the suggesting we attend a performance of Haydn’s Creation oratorio in St. Stephens church our last night in Vienna.

Yes, such a tour is expensive, but if you’re looking for memorable experiences, you’re not likely to do better than working with Into the Vineyard. We are already planning our next trip with them.
