Brochures are incorrect. We paid for gold level service but experienced less than that on tours and some hotels. Two of the five hotels were much less than a good hotel. One gave us fans to cool our room down- had no amenities. Arrived at Lake Louise after dark and left at crack of dawn- don’t even have pictures of it. The train was nice and the drinks were plentiful. The snacks were all the same all 5 days. Food was good, menu also repeated too much. Don’t carry a water bottle to collect glacier water- doesn’t happen. Be prepared to shuttle your luggage in and out of hotels to the bus to the train each day. Always in a line to get on the train, bus and to get room keys each day.
Certainly didn’t get what we expected we paid for!

The Rocky Mountaineer experience was awesome. I've read other reviews that state the train travel is only 2-days, the trees were in the way for photos, and the food portions were small. All of the above is true, but the entire package from the Canadian coast (Vancouver) to the prairies (Calgary) was an adventure worth the cost. We bought the Gold Leaf Service option and wasn't disappointed at all. From our stays in mainly Fairmont Hotels (3 are on the historic hotel listing) to the excellent service provided while on the train was outstanding. The guides during our coach tours (provided by Brewster Sightseeing) made our visit interesting and fun. Could I have gotten better pictures while on the train, sure, but you are moving (slower than usual in selected spots) and do you want to cut down the trees for your pictures, No. Each stop had its own unique character and charm. Lastly, the food and wine selection onboard the train focused on local fares. I love Okanagan Valley wines! This is journey worth the money.

Our 5 day experience was extremely expensive with virtually no time to enjoy stops on the Rockies. Days on the train were very long getting us into Kamloops, Banff and Jasper too late to explore much. Our arrival in Banff was so late, the restaurant was closing. That would have been okay expect that the food on the train was pretty sad.

We had a little more time in Kamloops than Banff and Jasper (not a good trade off) but one of the two nights we were lodged mikes outside of town in a retail/industrial area. That hotel was a dump.

Putting aside the frantic itinerary, the rail operation was as good as could be expected considering they were dealing with 12 bus loads of travelers.

The scenery was spectacular under beautiful skies; it would have been a real disappointment if weather had ruined that bright spot.

At US$900 per person per day double occupancy, this is a very expensive way to skim Canada’s Rockies

Disappointing - it is NOT the advertised train trip of a lifetime - its a really a hyped up bus trip !

1. Most importantly on our 6 day Rocky Mountaineer journey ONLY the first 2 days were on their much vaunted Gold Leaf train. For the following 5 days we were bused around on a Brewster Bus. The Rocky Mountaineer internet website and Itinerary only shows photos of their train and they are very opaque and too clever in not stating that on most of the journey you are in fact stuck on a damn bus. So much for dining in style in their luxurious spacious Gold Leaf carriages with their much vaunted glass vaulted ceiling. No dining cars or glass ceilings on the bus. No full disclosure here.

2. The views on the first days on the train are really only average at best compared to when you finally get off their train when you actually are in the Rockies. Their train continually stops and starts in rail sidings as freight trains take priority and the train often travels at a snails pace to give them priority. So much for Gold Leaf service where even a freight train takes priority over first class paying human cargo.

3. The train staff know that the views are average for the first 2 days on the train. So in an attempt to distract you they have everyone constantly searching for any signs of wildlife in an attempt to keep you distracted and occupied. Given the age of the crowd we should have been calling out "BINGO" and not Eagle every 5 minutes. Boring.

4. The accomodation at Kamloomps better known as "Kaloomps" is less than 1 star. The hotel provided is honestly embarrassing and so far from the first class price being paid. Its the sort of downbeat place in the movies where Dirty Harry busts down the door to catch the bank robbers.

5. Once you get off the train and on to the Brewster Bus the views and scenery are impressive and you are bused around to beautiful locations. However again you are stuck on a bus - this aint "no trip of a lifetime" dining in style swooshing on a train through the mountains like in the Orient Express.

6. For the absolutely exorbitant price you pay for an alleged first class train trip, which is in fact a bus trip, its hard not to feel that you have been taken for a ride - pun intended.

My advice - save thousands of dollars and get a normal train to Banff. Stay in Banff for 6 days, hire a car and go see the sights yourself. Rocky Mountaineer are just too smug to take your money for their train to nowhere and bus you like a booboo.

Hello Gordon, Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. I'm sorry to hear that your journey with us did not meet your expectations I do understand that the details of what is included can be lost in situations such as guests who do not book directly with us. On the package search page, modes of travel are listed for each package. This can include train and buses, identified by the train and bus images. The details of the journey are then broken down and explained by day under the itinerary section of the page for the package you are viewing, as an example from a day indicated as being off the train "Continue your journey from Lake Louise to Jasper on a sightseeing tour of Banff and Jasper National Parks via the Icefields Parkway". There are simplified details under the "what's included" section on the package page, as an example from a 9-day package "2 days Rocky Mountaineer SilverLeaf or GoldLeaf Service". We share the tracks with other trains and in Canada, freight has priority. Once in a while, we pull over to let another train pass – this is called a “meet”. Occasionally, delays do happen as a result. In such a case, our Train Managers communicate frequently to all guests throughout the day, informing them of any delays or issues should they arise and how they might impact our arrival time. If the journey is longer than anticipated, we extend our service, serving snacks and sometimes dinner. Our trains do travel at a slower speed. However, it is not to give freight priority, it is meant to give guests more time to take in the views. Our train purposefully slows down more at the most scenic areas to offer guests the best viewing and camera opportunities. Our crew does ask guests to keep an eye out and mention any wildlife spotted so that they can radio it in to other hosts on the train to hopefully allow other guests an opportunity to see. I'm sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your overnight stop in Kamloops. Unfortunately, there are no hotel properties such as the Fairmont Vancouver or Fairmont Banff Springs in Kamloops. We use the best of what is available to us in our overnight stops in both Quesnel and Kamloops. The hotel properties used in Kamloops are reflected in the overall package price. We will review to see if we can do better to communicate this to guests staying in Kamloops. I am happy to see that you did enjoy the views offered by these tours. Unfortunately, there are no train tracks available to take our guests to these locations by train. We truly appreciate guest feedback as it helps us grow and improve our service. Thank you. - Cody

Recently traveled in September and issues right from the start. Rental car was to be in both couples names, wasn't. So I did all the driving. Got to hotel in Calgary and they
had no reservations for us. Had travel agent check rest of lodging and turns out no reservation for Banff either. Able to get another hotel. Had dinner scheduled at original hotel and now had to travel 6 blocks to get dinner. Way to treat four 70 somethings. And,restaurant didn't have record of our voucher.Needed to take pictures of our receipts and send to RM for reimbursement, which took several weeks.

Fire in Jasper took out electric so we couldn't go there.RM had no control over this but their total lack of communication, especially a representative at Lake Louise is absolutely unacceptable. Had our emails and phone #'s but nothing till the day we had to travel back to Calgary. Received an email 2 hours after we left hotel. Issue with returning rental car that RM hadn't told agents about. A call by Avis cleared it up only after they wanted to charge us an additional $150.
We ended up missing more than 1/2 a day on the train and the meals with it. In addition, our luggage didn't arrive at the hotel until 1:00 A.M. Some passengers found an uber to take them to a Wal-mart to by night clothes!
I will say the train experience and the staff was wonderful. Figured we lost 20% of our trip and when we asked for some compensation, absolutely nothing.

If you're thinking of taking this "trip of a lifetime" lol, just take the train and keep your fingers crossed. Rent a car and book your own hotel rooms, at least that won't get screwed up. The drive from Calgary to Jasper is easy.

I've contacted RM several times regarding my satisfaction survey but they're not interested in addressing it

We recently travelled on the Rocky Mountaineer Vancouver - Kamloops - Jasper and then further with their Coach Lake Louise - Banff - Calgary. What an amazing experience surpassing all expectations. Their meals on the train were fabulous, the selection of accommodation was perfect for our needs and their luggage handling just seamless. We can recommend the trip and would have just loved for it to never end.

We travelled on Rocky Mountaineer from Denver to Moab, departing 24 October. I can not express how much we enjoyed this trip. The staff were exceptional, very attentive and friendly, I feel they really enjoy what they do, they were having fun and that made us have fun too. The scenery was beautiful. I wish it had been longer, It was our first trip on Rocky and I will do it again, perhaps a longer trip on the train next time. They were well organized I feel they communicated well with us. I think this was one of my favourite trips and I feel I am pretty well travelled.

The 2nd trip we made but we went with Senior Discovery Tours to Vancouver - Kamloops - Jasper. The train trip and meals were wonderful but the views weren't as exciting as the trip to Banff.
Will go on the trip again, but to Banff

I loved this trip. The Rocky Mountaineer staff were exceptional. They did everything with a smile and anticipated my needs. I love the way your luggage was in your hotel room when you arrived at the hotel. Everything was seamless. I will do it again and the 6 ladies that traveled with me all say the same.
