The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Shaughnessy
Residential neighbourhood to the ultra-wealthy, the gorgeous manor houses centred around The Crescent area are a fabled sight to behold. Shaughnessy is Vancouver's most verdant plotted neighbourhood, and its tree-lined streets, walking routes, bike trails, and charming public parks make for an ideal location to spend and afternoon communing with nature. Consequently, it is also the botanical centre of the city, featuring conservatories and an expansive Botanical Garden, taming and sculpting the wild into seasonal viewing areas and enchanting landscapes. Quiet, elegant Shaughnessy excels at providing the Three Gs: Gardens, Golfing, and Galleries.

- Cameron M3 contributionsZoo for plants! We went for the hedge maze but we loved all of the Gardens! We were saying it’s a zoo for plants! It’s so beautiful and had so many plants! Great place for a picnic! Definitely need a map to navigate! Lots of walking so wear quality shoes. The whole place was very well taken care of.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten May 23, 2023
- GerryAbbotsford, Canada74 contributionsVery interesting trees, plants and enjoyable beautiful flowersFrom out of Vancouver but wished to see these gardens and take some nice pictures as beautiful hot day. We are seniors (over75) and walked most as wide paths and mostly easy. We would suggest thou not enough benches in the long path areas. We had to rest, lean on a tree, and felt exhausted at times. Where are the benches? We wished we had taken a tour seated in wagons. The gardens have people always trimming or planting. We came last week in June and felt more staff should be needed as could tell winter was not kind to some hedges ect. We only saw one man working. It takes approx. 1.5 hrs to walk around most of the early plants. We did enjoy many plants and flowers and ground cover from other countries. Nice facility and gift shop but seemed expensive items. The small lake and fountains are very beautiful. Worth the walk, will be back. Short walking distance to the Shaughnessy restaurant combining lunch and garden walk is very nice. For two seniors cost us 17.20. There is a small but good restaurant connected and can eat inside or outside in the sun. Will come again next year! Longbeach.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten June 28, 2023
- Margo P25 contributionsHighly recommend a visit here!Highly recommend this beautiful garden. It has many themed areas with plants and trees from around the world. Lots of places to sit and admire the scenery. Cafe is excellent. Admission price is a bargain compared to Butchart Gardens in Victoria.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten July 31, 2023
- Hercules RUllapool, United Kingdom311 contributionsWonderful GardenA really wonderful botanical garden. There are sections devoted to different areas and it was a joy to wander around. The variety of planting was spectacular. The water features were especially fine. We also saw a heron, ducks and a black squirrel. The toilet facilities were good and we enjoyed a drink in the cafe.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten August 30, 2023

So glad I decided to include these excellent gardens during my day of outdoor attractions in Vancouver on an unseasonably warm, sunny day in October. Beautiful gardens, made even more enjoyable thanks to the addition of Barbara (volunteer) who accompanied me on a comprehensive, very knowledgeable tour of the gardens. Strolled around after the tour enjoying more of this must-see attraction.

A feature that I thought was really nice was tubs of flowers at the entrance and a map showing where you could go to see each of those flowers.

We went to Van Deusen garden in late September. Huge garden, recently refurbed visitor centre. Huge variety of plants and of interest to a keen gardener to complete novice. Far exceeded our expectations. Not cheap (‘$29 per person) but so worth it. Simple to get there by Uber.

If you ever get to visit Vancouver than VanDusen Botanical Garden should be on your must visit list!!

This budget family friendly spot can either take an hour or hours depending on how you want to view it. I would suggest bringing lunch, water and a blanket. If not, they have a restaurant on site and they also have daily/weekly food truck/pod, the day we visited Japadog was hosting. If they didn’t have one in Los Angeles/Santa Monica then I would’ve considered eating there. (They are absolutely delicious) Come on a week day to avoid crowds, plan accordingly, so you can set up a nice lunch on the great lawn and remember to stay hydrated. This place is sooo beautiful, you have to give them a visit!

We were looking for something to do in Vancouver since we didn't have time to go all the way to Bushart gardens. This was an inexpensive afternoon in a beautiful area of Vancouver. Well worth the Uber ride and admission.

The garden is all fine. Not much exotics plants. Landscaping is good. Yet TripAdvisor is cheating people into buying tickets with lower price on the search and charge more when doing real booking.

How long does it take to tour the whole Gardens?
VanDusen & Bloedel
Vancouver, Canada
We typically recommend an 1 - 1.5 hours to view the entire Garden. Some visitors may require more time if stopping to take photos or dining onsite.

I’ll be visiting there on a Friday at the end of July. Would it be better to visit early in the morning or closer to closing time to avoid the crowds?
VanDusen & Bloedel
Vancouver, Canada
In July we're open from 9am to 8pm daily. If you're looking for a quieter experience then we would recommend visiting in the evening between 5pm and 8pm. Generally weekends are busier than week days and evenings are the quietest time of day.

If I am dining at Shaughnessy do I need to buy ticket to see gardens?
Wim V
Richmond, Canada638 contributions
If you wish to walk in the gardens then you do need to purchase an entry ticket. The entrance to the restaurant is not inside the gardens so you don’t need to buy an entry ticket in order to get in to dine. The restaurant offers a limited view of the gardens but not entry.

Not necessarily
Each season has its unique look at VanDusen gardens; you will have plenty to see in Summer, Spring and Fall but Winter would be a little too cold for a visit there

We will be visiting mid August. Is there a restaurant on the grounds or is there a nice restaurant you can recommend near by

We had lunch in the restaurant there (fairly near the main entrance, before you go in). We found it very good indeed, and would recommend it.

What are some major deciduous trees in the garden? Are there fallen leaves at the end of September and beginning of October? How about red maple trees? Thanks!
VanDusen & Bloedel
Vancouver, Canada
Across the Great Lawn, with its sweeping views, you will find collections of deciduous beech trees, ashes and mountain ashes, with brightly coloured leaves and berries. Lindens, maples and Japanese maples bordering Heron Lake provide some of the best photo ops, or wander through the bronze swamp cypress trees reflecting off Cypress Pond. For a glimpse into the rich autumn colours of Eastern Canadian forests, the Eastern North America Garden is home to red maples, golden tulip trees and horse chestnuts.
Fall is definitely a beautiful time to come to the Garden!
