Wonderful evening. “George” (aka Eric) was brilliant in bringing Vancouver’s history alive. Even though a local...still many new facts of my home city shared.... have been on similar walks around the world and can honestly state that “George” has been the best storyteller we have experienced

Highly recommended regardless if visiting Vancouver or if you have lived here your entire life

From the moment I spotted Glenn’s pink hat and sweater vest, I knew we were in for an unforgettable morning. When you start your day dancing to the YMCA, you really can’t go wrong! An engaged, welcoming and heartwarming storyteller, he took us on a magical tour of the centuries beneath our feet - from colour coded ties in 1930s beer parlours to 1990s bombings and Supreme Court cases, Glenn brought decades of 2SLGBTQ+ history to life. These stories remind us that we really are everywhere. Thank you/huy ch q’u

My mum and I did the lost souls of Gastown tour last light lead by Rohan and it was absolutely superb! The storytelling and acting was brilliant, and very interesting to hear the spooky history of Vancouver. Thanks so much Rohan for an incredible and unforgettable tour! Highly recommend!

We did the Lost Souls of Gastown tour in July. I was expecting ghost stories but soon realized it was more of a historical tour. That being said, it was so well done, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Rowan was so entertaining! We did Secrets of Stanley Park with Glenn in August and WOW!! So much history and Glenn is an incredible guide. I would highly recommend any tour as this group is top notch! Bring cash to tip the guide at the end, they deserve it.

Excellent tour with Rowan. Explored Gaston and some of the surrounding area. Rowan did a nice job weaving together the history of the area, Canada, and more. Nice way to see the city.

On July 24th, my family and I decided to be tourists in our on city. We joined Rowan our guide at Cathedral Square where the tour began. Within minutes of starting, Rowan took on the persona of his character. Dressing and acting for the period, we all hung onto the words and story that he revealed to us from a first person perspective. Knowing my city, I was ready to challenge any wrong facts. Wow was I wrong. He knew his facts and information very accurately. He was able to make us all picture in our minds what he explained to the point we thought we were actually there.
Rowans personal conversation and humour with each one of us was exhilarating. At the end of the tour, I approached Rowan and explained that I also work in the tourism industry and with whom. We enjoyed his tour so much that we are planning on doing The Forbidden Vancouver tour about the prohibition with Rowan and at least one or two more. If Rowan is not our guide, I hope that the rest of them come close to the standards he has set.

Hello Clifford R, It sounds like you thoroughly enjoyed the Lost Souls of Gastown with Rowan! He is a wonderful performer and storyteller with a vast knowledge of our rich Vancouver history. We do love to have locals on our tours as we all learn so much from each other, exchanging stories and experiences. We look forward to seeing you and your family on more of our tours in the future! All the best, Lina F.

This is a tough tour to review because on one hand, the people who work for the company are SO nice and helpful I would never want to poo-poo what they are doing, but for travelers like me I feel like you need to know what you are getting into. This tour is very theatrical and very silly. It would be ideal for people with young children or if you love musicals and are not a city person. I felt SUPER weird and out of place as a solo traveler, because I had nobody to laugh and smile with when things got a bit goofy. Also I'm from a big city and so being in a group with a costumed tour leader in the middle of a crowded street is like... eeeee cringe!! Maybe I should have figured what I was getting into, I don't know. I've taken some haunted or ghost tours before that have an element of silliness to them but they were totally fine because they were on specific locations or in buildings so you aren't just exposed on the street. Also I'm a huge history buff and sometimes it's hard to ask more in depth history questions when your guide has to be "in character" all the time. Also the tour is LONG. I thought I could hit up some restaurants I'd been eyeing in the area afterwards but some were already ending their dinner service, so be prepared.
In conclusion- lovely people working for this company, but this tour is not for everyone.

Hi Kathryn, I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your walking tour with us. From your description it sounds like you came on the Lost Souls of Gastown? We try to make it clear on our website that the experience is a Gothic Theatre Adventure, and certainly not a conventional walking tour. It sounds like you had a different expectation and weren't expecting a theatre performance? Might I ask how you acquired your tickets? I searched in our booking system but didn't see any guests with your name - I'm wondering if you bought tickets through a re-seller who didn't accurately represent to you what the experience involved? I'm sorry if that's the case! I'd be very interested to know if you wouldn't mind emailing me at will@forbiddenvancouver.ca. In our experience the Lost Souls of Gastown is much loved by guests who enjoy theatre, history, and an adventure through a uniquely historic neighbourhood. It certainly takes a degree of imagination on the part of guests to step back in time on the streets of contemporary Gastown. That's when the magic happens! I must admit to being a bit puzzled by your comments on the experience having an element of "silliness" - in the many thousands of guests we've hosted, I've never heard that feedback before. While there is definitely some comedy along the way, the piece is pretty dark overall - dealing with stories of murder, fire and smallpox for example. Usually the feedback we receive after the tour is shock and amazement at the early history of Vancouver. I hope the rest of your stay in Vancouver was a great success. All the best Will Woods

I've been on many guided walking tours of various cities, so when it first became clear that Forbidden Vancouver was a little different and would involve more 'audience participation' than usual, I wasn't too sure what to expect. But Tanya played the lead reporter's role in "Prohibition City" well and before long the bunch of us were right along for the ride. Spinning the story through local figures and the buildings/neighbourhoods in which they moved is a fun and (for me) unheard of way to present the historical account. And these guys obviously have a ton of pride in their city. I'll try another next time I'm in town.

The Prohibition City tour is available every evening at 19h00 and is very reasonably priced at $22 (£13) for almost two hours of information, fun and entertainment.

The meeting place at Cathedral Square was easy to find and and close to hotels around Canada Place/Vancouver harbour.

Look for the park opposite the Holy Rosary Cathedral on the corner of Richards and Dunsmuir Streets. If you arrive early - at least 10 minutes is recommended - there is plenty of seating providing a place to relax and admire the cathedral while waiting for the tour guide to arrive.

Our guide was Leonard who arrived just ahead of 19h00 to meet and greet everyone on the tour and tick them off on his list. Online booking is advised and is simple and easy to do.

Although almost two hours jammed full of facts, anecdotes, period photographs, poetry and even the odd dramatisation, the route of the tour is only around two kilometres in length and is mainly level, so should be well within the capability of most people.

As indicated by the name of the tour, the focus is on the Prohibition in Canada, including some interesting facts about the illegal drinking houses and why they became known as Blind Pigs.

But there is a lot more besides including the surprising influence of the Panama Canal on Vancouver, influential characters who shaped the city, violent conflict in Chinatown and the history of opium dens in the city.

There are also some interesting buildings along the way, including one of the oldest hotels in Vancouver, a Beaux Arts building, the Sun Building, and the narrowest building in the world, according the Guinness Book of Records.

The tour ends in Gastown near the steam clock, so make dinner reservations somewhere in Water street for around 21h00 for the perfect end to your evening.

Leonard was a great storyteller, putting a great deal of energy and enthusiasm to the tales of the city. He did a good job of shepherding the group safely on the route.

The Prohibition Tour was two hours well spent and recommended for anyone looking for something different to do in the evening. An added bonus was a small book of "Stories from the Streets" by Forbidden Vancouver.
