About
The Contemporary Art Gallery (CAG) is an independent, non-profit public art gallery and one of Canada’s leading venues for contemporary art. Offering free access to everyone, we work with artists from Canada and around the world to produce exhibitions, off-site projects, residencies, learning, outreach, community engagement programs, events and publications. Each of these interdependent strands of programming varies in scale, duration and location to challenge how and where we might engage with contemporary visual art.

The area

Neighbourhood: Yaletown & False Creek North
Yaletown has risen from the ashes of its rough-and-tumble industrial past into one of Vancouver's new chicest neighbourhoods. The place responsible for originating of the phrase 'skid row' might not call to mind independently-owned boutiques and terraced cafes, but having swallowed the waterfront lines of False Creek North, the resulting amalgamation transformed the area into an elegant, stylish hotspot with a view. Its youthful vibe owes to the many young families and young professionals who live there, bolstering nightlife and restaurant variety along its cobbled streets. It is the flagship neighbourhood for modern revitalization, and the It-Spot for boutique hotels and modish eats.

If you are not an expert in modern art maybe you don’t visit the museum however it’s a good plan in a raining day.
It was my pleasure to enjoy the exposition of Japanese Murakami - The octopus eats its own leg spending there a great couple of hours.

Wonderful welcome from the assistant on the front desk who was very knowledgeable and told us about the current exhibitions in the gallery space and beyond in off-site locations around the city. The exhibition on display was a photography group exhibition featuring ten international and Canadian artists. This is a good place to spend several hours viewing high quality contemporary art. There is also a bookshop!

We weren't thrilled with the artist who was displaying, therefore it doesn't get a very high review for the gallery. It's worth a stop though and it's like a flip of a coin. You could love it or you could hate it. I certainly wouldn't walk out of my way to go here.

Very small, very minimalistic, very hipster-y. I liked it though. Was a very short visit but it was free to enter so that is okay. Nice and quiet place, very peaceful end to a busy day.

This gallery is downtown, accessible and free. Open all week except Monday, which is cool. There are two spaces in the gallery and exhibit work from international and local artists. The show currently is Korean artist, Kim Beom. It's cool to attend a free public gallery and view art works from across the world, it's like a passport to an international art world right in your own backyard. I attended the Kim Beom talk and it was free and full for a rainy Saturday afternoon. We were able to engage directly with the artist and ask questions like "was that painting video inspires by Bob Ross?" And it was ! Overall, a great cultural venue to learn more about artists you might not know and a free and easy place to visit if you're a tourist looking for something interesting and don't want to pay $15 admission to see museum quality, international art.

We enjoyed 2 guided tours and the docent was amazing. She obviously loves art and her job. She gave a brief overview, then let us view the art. After that, we would discuss what we'd seen. Both tour were informative and entertaining.

This gallery displays exhibitions by some of the world's most renowned and emerging contemporary artists. Although small, it is a nice change to mega-galleries which take hours to go through. The intimate scale really allows you to contemplate the ideas put forth in the exhibitions and understand what you're seeing or hearing. They also display diverse media including painting, sculpture, video, and performance. The facade is always changing with projects by different artists. It is definitely a great place to stop in when you're visiting, and great that it's free! The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. You can also purchase or read art books in their library. Just make sure to check the website in case the gallery is closed to install in between exhibitions.

Compact in size, but large in innovative ideas. This gallery is just a few steps from Granville and is well worth a visit.

Every visit to Vancouver includes this out of the way gallery that is worth searching out if you want to be pushed into another aspect of modern art. Small, usually two or three rooms. Admission free.

The most recent show was totemic sculptures of found objects, mostly from the ocean, i.e. rusted metal, wood, shoreline debris.

Perhaps not to everyone's taste however this gallery always pushes the envelope. It may only take you five minutes to see it all - test your boundaries and check out Vancouver's contemporary art scene.
