About History Walks in Vancouver with James Johnstone
Vancouver’s old houses and the stories of the people who built and lived in them are my passion. My History Walks through Vancouver’s four oldest heritage neighbourhoods: the East End/Strathcona, West End, Mount Pleasant, and Grandview, are a culmination of over two decades working as a house genealogist. During that time I produced in-depth histories of over 800 Vancouver houses. People call me the House Whisperer. My blog, “When An Old House Whispers” is followed by people in over 70 countries world wide. If you like walking through and photographing historic neighbourhoods, if you ever wanted to time travel, if you are curious to uncover the mysteries hidden behind the doors of old houses, if you have an ear for old-timers’ stories, my History Walks are for you! Each tour lasts 2.5 to 3 hours. Check my website for the content, cost, departure times and locations of my scheduled tours. E-mail me if you would like more info or to book a private tour in English, Italian or Japanese.

Once again I experienced the Strathcona History Walk with James Johnstone. It is so evident that he is a superb historian and story teller . Brought friends along and as we walked away from the tour , ALL said what an outstanding morning learning about our city ( many attendees Vancouver born and raised) Incredible details of the lives of those who once lived in the Strathcona area . Advised of the quirks and quarks of our historical planning of our city . Noted architectural details of homes. James is a gem .Cares deeply for the history- kept every attendee mesmerized. Thank you for another fabulous tour!

What a wonderful way to spend a few hours in Vancouver! We went on James’ history walk of the Working/Wild Side of East Van and heard so many fascinating stories of the people who lived there. James is amazing - his knowledge of the area and of the architecture and of how people lived is extensive. Highly recommended for both tourists and locals!

I went on a Photo Walk Experience today in the Grandview/Little Italy area of Vancouver with a group of photographers, led by historian James Johnstone. Informative, interesting, fascinating, well-researched, colourful characters of the past, a full binder of facts, figures and photographs, lots of local colour and charm. I highly recommend any tour with James. You will be impressed! I have been on several of his tours and they are outstanding.

I learned a lot on the West End History Walk about existing buildings and homes and also about what was there originally. A great tour for both visitors and those living in Vancouver! Not a dry, rehearsed talk at all, this tour shows James's passion for Heritage and History.
