I host 2 and a half to 3 hour guided history walks in four of Vancouver's historic neighbourhoods: the East End/Strathcona, the West End, Grandview, and Mount Pleasant. Most of the stories shared on my tours come from my work as a house history researcher. I have researched the history of 900 Vancouver homes and share their stories and my passion for Vancouver history on my tours and in a popular blog called "When An Old House Whispers". The dates and times and rendezvous information for my regularly scheduled history walks can be found at historywalksinvancouver blog. Private walking tours in English, Japanese or Italian can be arranged for groups of five or more depending on my availability.

I've been on two of James' tours, one in Strathcona and recently one in Mount Pleasant. He knows Vancouver history and in particular specific house histories, which can be quite fascinating. Strathcona being the more rough and tumble side of early Vancouver to me had...More

This was a great way to spend a couple of hours in the East End/Strathcona learning the history of early Vancouver, of connections to well-known (and not so well-known!) local figures, and appreciating the passion James has for the neighborhood. I highly recommend this Tour...More

James Johnstone's enthusiasm and passion for history and the Strathcona neighbourhood is infectious. We were lucky with a dry, sunny day for the tour. We saw areas we have not been to before. I'm embarrassed as I grew up in Vancouver... The tour was just...More

Outstanding! I have lived in Vancouver for 40 years and have done a number of architecture tours, but James' tour of Strathcona was by far the most interesting. As what was historically the first stop for many immigrant groups, the area has had quite a...More

What an informative morning! James is so familiar with the Strathcona neighbourhood that not only did he offer us general knowledge of the area, he shared personal stories and made each home and family 'come to life' for us. From bootleggers to stories about the...More
