We specifically came to the China Beach area to hike to Mystic Beach. The hike was gorgeous, well laid out, and a great length. It was about 4km return and an intermediate hiking experience. There are steep climbs and about 175 stairs near the end of the hike. The beach is very lovely, with a tiny waterfall and a rope swing. The water is cold, but refreshing! We definitely recommend this hike!

China Beach is a beautiful, sandy beach that seems to stretch on for miles! The surf pounds on the way to the beach in typical West Coast fashion. The trail down to the beach is a wide, fairly well maintained one with some steps closer to the beach. It is about a 15 - 20 minute walk. It is lovely to bring a picnic lunch and to sit on a piece of driftwood, listen to the surf and enjoy a delightful repast. There is good parking and the beach is relatively uncrowded. About 2 hours north of Victoria. Be sure to stop for coffee at the Shirley Diner on the way. Very friendly and the baked goods are to die for!

About 90 minutes West of Victoria, there is not much on the South coast of Vancouver Island other than lots of trees, windy road and wonderful country. Just past the village
of Jordan River (one cafe and not much else) are the turn-offs for China Beach. Unlike most of this rugged coastline, this is a real beach with real sand. It's long, mostly empty
and absolutely beautiful. Please note, however, that this is the NW Pacific Coast and liable to inclement weather, so choose your day.

Even in the off season when this place can be rather stormy, it is still a great place to visit. The beach is a mixture of sand, grit, and pebbles and it certainly not a golden, groomed beach for sunbathers (thank goodness!). If staying at China Beach camp ground, be prepared for a LOT of steps getting down and (more importantly) back u to the beach. 160 steps at the last count. Kinda fun, though. The camp site itself is well-maintained and serviced and reasonably priced. It has space for tents, trailers and larger RVs. There is no cellular phone service available in this area, so be warned. The camp site is not open year-round (closes in Sept and re-pens May long weekend), but French Beach camp ground further towards Sooke is open year-round.
The beach is great for a long walk with the dogs or just hanging out. It can get quite windy, so be prepared.

Nothing but incredible things to say about this campground! It was clean, private, spacious and surrounded by beautiful forest and ocean...all ready to explore! Not only was the price incredible, but we were within walking distance of some incredible beaches. We stayed two nights (end of July with no reservations) and we were very happy that we found this location! (We aren't from the Island). The camp host was funny...very nice man. Oh...and they have clean, filtered water as well. Last but not least, if you're looking for a campground where there are not a lot of children, this is the one! There is a campground right down the street which is more kid friendly (playground etc) but this one, we found more couples relaxing and going for hikes down to the ocean. Mind you, if you have kids and love to explore, this is also a great spot.

From the car park you take a well groomed path down to the beach. The beach is sandy and the views expansive. Even if the car park is full, the beach seems empty. At one end is a hidden waterfall. Loads of interesting rocks, shells, and driftwood to explore. Well worth the visit. Note...the path is steep at the very bottom and may not be suitable for all. There are view points along the way .

Large and clean sites. Doubles and singles with lots of green belt between. Pit toilets, water tap, garbage and recycle recepticals.
This is a good way to "leave it all behind". 34 km before Port Renfrew on the beautiful Westcoast. Firewood for purchase, friendly staff, well kept campground with park host.
1km walk to the beach, lots of stairs though with an incline, and pit toilet at the beach.
Pristine Westcoast beach, sand and surf. Worth the walk, spend several hours exploring.

Dogs allowed on a sandy beach-rare! It was great, even in the rain. There is enough shoreline at low tide for a decent stroll. Water cold, but could tolerate wading. Great forest with large trees on the way down to the water. Bear and cougar country for sure. Worth the drive from our campsite at Goldstream (near Victoria.)

A beautiful campground, nice and quiet. Not a party place. Forest is gorgeous and the campsites are quite private. Bring your own firewood if possible as it does get expensive at $8 per bundle. Walk to beach is great but ve ready for lots of stairs - 260 each way! We will go back - loved it!

Amazing 2 hour hike, bring good shoes bc there are exposed roots throughout. Bring a picnic for the beach. Great waterfall at the end of hike!

There's lots near there, look it up on TripAdvisor. One is Fossil Bay Resort, mid-way between Sooke and China Beach, another is Mystic Beach Vacation Home.
