We enjoyed our very first tour so much back in 2007 that we knew we had to go again on our recent visit. On this, our second family trip to Victoria, we managed to squeeze in two Ghostly Walks over three nights.
The 90 minute evening tours guide you through the old streets of Victoria with a very much alive and animated tour guide who tells tales of bygone days in and the eerie reminders of the long-gone citizens who haven't exactly left this beautiful city. In essence, you are led through the streets and alleys of the city stopping at buildings and points of interest which have historical significance and fortunately, a haunted past.
These tours are a great way to enjoy an evening in the city with older kids and teens. My kids were between the ages of 10 and 15 over the course of two trips and both really loved the adventure. Both of my kids have pretty active imaginations and love the paranormal twists, but younger kids or easily spooked kids may not be good candidates. Also, there is a fair amount of walking on each tour (I did notice the tours have changed a bit to evidently offer more seating options along the route on ledges and rock walls along the way). It is often very dark, a few busy streets are crossed, there are uneven walking surfaces, steps, and the elements to consider as well.
Of the three tour guides we experienced, we liked Martin the best. He is a fluid story teller and is really good at keeping your rapt attention. We also had a woman who guided us up through to St Ann's and she was very good as well. I think that her particular route was not as interesting as the Bastion Square route that both Martin and a much younger guide took us through. The younger guide appeared to be an apprentice of sorts and still trying to find his voice as a guide so he was maybe not as credible sounding as the two older guides.
Overall, its a great way to see another side of Victoria and if I had one minor concern, it would be that the tour does not end where it starts and that is peculiar... particularly when we ended on the dark grounds of St Ann's which is nowhere near the inner harbour where the tour assembles. So, wear our walking shoes!
