- juniper yToronto, Canada33 contributionsA colourful gem.Very beautiful layout of the land. An enjoyable setting with a feast for the eyes. Although we didn’t sit down for tea, it would be wonderful . The friendly volunteers told us the historic background of the place , that adds a lot to the experience. Truly amazing to see such well cultivated garden , tend by volunteers with fondness of the plants and place.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten May 6, 2024
- GREG SSeattle, Washington7 contributionsHighly recommendedWell worth visiting. Very pretty, well-done garden. Also worth having the Afternoon Tea. (Recommend the royal Abkhazi tea.) Easy to access by public bus in theory, though once I was on the bus it skipped the stop I needed--apparently that particular does not have the stop in its route, so ask before boarding.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten July 10, 2024
- Kalia Z72 contributionsBeautiful visitIf you were thinking, this is going to be another Butchart Gardens it’s not. It is a very well preserved park in a residential area. There is a tea house for an inner city garden. It is beautiful not a lot to do around there besides this. Best time to visit spring.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten July 13, 2024
- mskafishWylam, United Kingdom21 contributionsBeautiful small gardenThis is an adorable urban garden run by volunteers who work hard to develop and maintain it. It is inspirational. A must if you like gardens. The gardens are stunning and the incorporation of the stone and plants is just wonderful. It also has a tea room in the old family home and a small gift shopVisited July 2024Travelled soloWritten August 2, 2024
- KjayKlamath Falls, Oregon655 contributionsA tranquil, 1-acre oasis, “Victoria treasure”!This woodland/wildflower garden sequestered in a residential neighborhood (at 1964 Fairfield Road) offers an uncrowded, unique garden experience – blending natural & enhanced landscapes into an artistic tapestry. Native ferns and Garry Oaks dazzle, along with the Gargantuan rhododendrons snaking skyward, tranquil lily ponds reflecting darting dragonflies, lichen-splotched boulders warming slender lizards & wizened Bonsai trees, & eye-catching flowers brightening footpaths that serenely circle to secluded resting spots. Definitely a place to slow your pace, and immerse yourself in the tranquility of Nature. Street-side parking is limited, but you can park on side streets, and easily walk to the garden entryway – where there may be several tables with native plants or tulip bulbs for sale. Admission is by donation, and a friendly volunteer will greet you, & provide a flyer for your self-guided walking tour. We enjoyed two hours wandering around – photographing the flowers & wild birds (over 20 species noted there); and talking to other visitors, as well as chatting with the very knowledgeable, volunteer garden staff. When we visited in September, the Golden-crowned Kinglets & Anna’s Hummingbirds were most enchanting! At the Summerhouse, be sure to browse through the wonderful photo books that identify (by season) so many of the featured flowers & trees. And don’t forget to look in the eloquent Gift Shop by the Teahouse. Our favorite were the handcrafted porcelain pins of cats & dogs – with “22-carat gold lustre”, created by artist Winnie Tam. In 2000, The Land Conservancy of British Columbia acquired Abkhazi Garden “to protect this local treasure” – which is truly a memorable Victoria experience, off the beaten path, and not to be missed!Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 23, 2024

After reading reviews I was excited to come here for a post wedding brunch. I emailed to book a reservation for 12 adults 3 months ahead of time and was told that I would have to: give a visa to make a reservation, preorder all food (was told not aloud to add anything when we’re there), each guest has to order the same thing, 18% minimum tip, not allowed to stay past 1.5hours (which I don’t mind, but just kind of rude to say). I asked how I could order that far in advance when their lunch menus are seasonal and not the same now as they will be then, and her response was that they are not able to cater to a group of 12 ordering lunch and we would all have to order high teas, because their kitchen is small… I asked if we could preorder 9 afternoon teas, and that way if a few people want something off the lunch menu they can decide day of, and I was told no. This was just poor business by the manager, we were going with a budget of $1000, we’ll be taking our business elsewhere. Oh! And their website says they can cater up to 45 people for sit down dining, apparently not.
It has me wondering if a group of 12 people walk in for a lunch do they just turn them away? The restaurant has 30+ seating so it’s odd that they have that much seating but can’t handle a group of 12 ordering at the same time. Oh well their loss 🤷🏽♀️

The walk (self guided) through the gardens is wonderful and full of beautiful plants of different sizes and shapes, all compressed into one acre in a residential area. The history is better laid out in the web site, but both the husband and wife were interned during WWII in quite different places and different circumstances. They had known each other before the war. They met again after thinking the other had died, and married and spent their time building their garden and their house. The house is quite revolutionary for the interior design at the time (see the dining room pictures) and being in the house is a mixture of pure domestic matters (period tiling in the bathroom), modern for the time design elements (indirect lighting in the dining room) and china from that era when they lived there. Our timing was at the end of the afternoon and we missed the opportunity to have tea and a snack there, but it's clear it would have been a lot of fun. Our snack was at the nearby DemiTasse, but that's another review.

Loved the afternoon tea; loved the gardens! This place is hidden in a neighborhood, and is so lovely! We had afternoon tea outside, and then toured the garden afterwards. No need for us to visit Butchart gardens... this was ideal for us, and much less expensive! The story of the Prince/Princess Abkhazi is also stunning, and how the neighbors take care of the gardens.

With a focus on nature, an exiled prince and WWII POW created an artistic masterpiece. Unlike butchart gardens arranged plants these plants are scattered with a natural look. Beautiful and well worth your time

If you're looking for a superb high tea experience overlooking a stunning natural garden this is the place. Not cheap at $55 per person but so far above all others that for a special occasion it's a treat. two kinds of scones blueberry and cheddar chive maple butter checkerboard sandwiches mushroom pate bison jerky maple butter tarts in Nanaimo bars and on and on...oh yeah😋

Lovely quiet gardens off the beaten track. We did not have time to stay for tea but the teahouse and outdoor seating area looked fabulous for a less crowded tea than The Empress Hotel. We saw a group of ladies on the patio having a beautiful time together looking out on the gardens. While we toured the small, well maintained grounds a young couple was planning the best spot for wedding photos. I can imagine anywhere in the garden would be ideal. The teahouse blends well with the natural surroundings as designed by the architect.

Peggy Abkhazi began the gardens in 1947. She came to Victoria after years interred at a Japanese camp in Shanghai. She and her husband Nicolas spent years creating a beautiful space where landscape and plants exist harmoniously on a hillside parcel near Cook Village. A place of quiet beauty, this gem is an oasis in an urban landscape and is well worth a visit.

Lots and lots of spring flowers, with the promise of many more to come within a week or two. The layout is very attractive, and the paths are easy to use. We didn’t seat for tea but may return for a light lunch here. The garden is delightful, and a second visit would be agreeable.

Bad service. We made a reservation by e-mail, which had been confirmed. At arrival we were told they only make reservations by phone. Because there was a party of 40 people there was no place for us. Their only excuse was that the kitchen already closed.
Very disappointing since we were on a road trip and not be able to visit another day. We looked forward to this high tea…

Should we choose High or Afternoon Tea? How much difference is there?
Written June 14, 2019
I would recommend their Royal High Tea over the Afternoon Tea. Admittedly we have only tried the former, but if I look at the difference in the courses for the two offerings on their web page it seems to me that the simpler version lacks precisely those touches of refinement (such as the smoked salmon blinis with crème fraîche) that made the High Tea experience so enjoyable. Even at $50 the High Tea is par for Victoria standards; the Afternoon Tea is ten dollars cheaper but life is too short.

We are coming for a cruise excursion and it doesn’t arrive until 6:30 pm, will we be able to enjoy the garden? We booked through the cruise line but I’m worried whether it will be worth it?
Written June 3, 2018
My wife and I went on the same cruise that gets into Vancouver at 6 and leaves like around 10 o'clock. By the time you get off of the ship go somewhere and then get back, you really don't have time to get your money's worth on any of the excursions. If I had to do it over again, I would either stay on the ship or I would get of the ship and have a taxi take me downtown to goof around for a few hours. There is just not enough time to do much else. The cruise ship stops there because US law requires they do so.

I am traveling with a group of 10 family members on a cruise to Victoria. We arrive at 1:00pm and depart for Vancouver at midnight.
We would like to tour the garden and have tea.
What transportation options are available?
Written March 17, 2016
Are you coming in at the cruise ship terminal? Cruise ships dock at the Ogden Point cruise ship terminal, Its is in the southwest corner of the downtown core. Abkhazi Garden is a longer walk along the shoreline sidewalk (beautiful walk in nice weather.), I am guessing an hour walk one way. Taxi ride for 10 might cost $20 per cab. To see the entire gardens can be done in an hour.
How long are you staying in Victoria and how long do you want to be in the garden. The drive for for is not far and with my SUV I can do the trip in 2 rounds. (depends what time your boat arrives, the weather and where else you want to go.
Abkhazi Gardens, 1964 Fairfield Road, +1 250 598-8096,
Prince and Princess Abkhazi along with designer John Wade came together and created a garden that took over 40 years to come together on a beautiful property overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains.

Is there anything blooming in early May?
Written March 6, 2016
It is currently early March with cherry, lotus, magnolia trees in full bloom. Daffodils and crocuses are up, tulips will follow. By May these things will be done but the garden beds will take over. Check out Butchart Gardens website for timing of displays.

I'll be there in early May. Will there be flowers then?
Written March 6, 2016
Definately!, The flowers are already out and there will be tons more. Absolutely beautiful. You will love it.

We have a scheduled visit through a tour on September 28. However, tour has set the tea and garden visit at 5:30 pm. I am wondering whether we will actually be able to see the gardens in the evening - are their lights? Thanks.
Written August 11, 2015
Hello from Victoria! I am a local tour guide. I just called Abkhazi Garden. Yes, there are ground-level lights, but - more importantly - they tell me they do not have any bookings listed for Sept. 28. Probably best to check with your tour operator. Hope this helps.
