- Judy HPortland, Oregon143 contributionsSkip Butchart; go to AbkhaziLoved the afternoon tea; loved the gardens! This place is hidden in a neighborhood, and is so lovely! We had afternoon tea outside, and then toured the garden afterwards. No need for us to visit Butchart gardens... this was ideal for us, and much less expensive! The story of the Prince/Princess Abkhazi is also stunning, and how the neighbors take care of the gardens.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten July 7, 2023

- Cmpcga68 contributionsWould recommend garden tourWe toured the garden and even my husband who was iffy about the whole thing thoroughly enjoyed it. We spent over an hour wandering while waiting for our tea reservation. That was an adequate amount of time. Then we had the afternoon tea. The sandwiches and goodies were very good. I chose this place for the tea experience because it was significantly cheaper than the Empress. And I guess one does it for the experience because I can’t quite figure out why it’s so expensive for the amount of food you get.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten September 23, 2023

We had been here once years ago and got a beautiful gift card to go. The Royal High Tea was very elegant, tasty and, surprisingly filling. Loved the use of the old fashioned cups and plates. Service was very nice and they anticipated our needs.
The decor was lovely and local artwork is on display and for sale. Oh yes, did I mention they have a well-stocked and eclectic gift shop? I even bought myself a birthday gift 😉
All-in-all absolutely a must-see/do in Victoria. Even if you’re already a Victorian. We didn’t have time to see the gardens so will come again.

From the moment we walked into the gardens, we felt that it was well cared for and loved by the people who maintain it. The plants were all very healthy and there was a good variety of shrubs, trees and flowers beautifully positioned throughout the grounds. Worth a visit to get a bit of serenity and zen into your day.

A five-acre garden with lots of beautiful trees, shrubs and flowers, organized by Prince and Princess Abhkazi after the second world war and fortunately saved from developers in 2000. Now run by volunteers under the auspices of the Land Conservancy of British Columbia. Well worth a visit, especially before or after a visit to the Tea House.

A small but beautiful garden with a handful of short paths and loops as well as peaceful places to sit and enjoy. Admission by donation makes this a really great affordable stop while in Victoria (bring cash if you wish to leave a donation).

We loved meandering through the garden and seeing all of the interesting foliage and beautiful blooms. High Tea was a delightful bonus. The tea was delicious and the pastries were unique and enjoyable. Our tour guide was Realita (?) and our bus driver was Emily. We enjoyed the beauty of Victoria with our guides information.

Should we choose High or Afternoon Tea? How much difference is there?

I would recommend their Royal High Tea over the Afternoon Tea. Admittedly we have only tried the former, but if I look at the difference in the courses for the two offerings on their web page it seems to me that the simpler version lacks precisely those touches of refinement (such as the smoked salmon blinis with crème fraîche) that made the High Tea experience so enjoyable. Even at $50 the High Tea is par for Victoria standards; the Afternoon Tea is ten dollars cheaper but life is too short.

We are coming for a cruise excursion and it doesn’t arrive until 6:30 pm, will we be able to enjoy the garden? We booked through the cruise line but I’m worried whether it will be worth it?

My wife and I went on the same cruise that gets into Vancouver at 6 and leaves like around 10 o'clock. By the time you get off of the ship go somewhere and then get back, you really don't have time to get your money's worth on any of the excursions. If I had to do it over again, I would either stay on the ship or I would get of the ship and have a taxi take me downtown to goof around for a few hours. There is just not enough time to do much else. The cruise ship stops there because US law requires they do so.
Are the main paths and the tea house wheelchair accessible?

It is a rock and gravel path and some stairs at the cottage and also stairs if you want to dine outside of the house.

I am traveling with a group of 10 family members on a cruise to Victoria. We arrive at 1:00pm and depart for Vancouver at midnight.
We would like to tour the garden and have tea.

Are you coming in at the cruise ship terminal? Cruise ships dock at the Ogden Point cruise ship terminal, Its is in the southwest corner of the downtown core. Abkhazi Garden is a longer walk along the shoreline sidewalk (beautiful walk in nice weather.), I am guessing an hour walk one way. Taxi ride for 10 might cost $20 per cab. To see the entire gardens can be done in an hour.
How long are you staying in Victoria and how long do you want to be in the garden. The drive for for is not far and with my SUV I can do the trip in 2 rounds. (depends what time your boat arrives, the weather and where else you want to go.
Abkhazi Gardens, 1964 Fairfield Road, +1 250 598-8096‎,
Prince and Princess Abkhazi along with designer John Wade came together and created a garden that took over 40 years to come together on a beautiful property overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains.

Is there anything blooming in early May?
Karen A
Saanich, British Columbia70 contributions
It is currently early March with cherry, lotus, magnolia trees in full bloom. Daffodils and crocuses are up, tulips will follow. By May these things will be done but the garden beds will take over. Check out Butchart Gardens website for timing of displays.

We have a scheduled visit through a tour on September 28. However, tour has set the tea and garden visit at 5:30 pm. I am wondering whether we will actually be able to see the gardens in the evening - are their lights? Thanks.

Hello from Victoria! I am a local tour guide. I just called Abkhazi Garden. Yes, there are ground-level lights, but - more importantly - they tell me they do not have any bookings listed for Sept. 28. Probably best to check with your tour operator. Hope this helps.
