The Whistler Train Wreck Trail
The Whistler Train Wreck Trail
4.5
About
A long-time favourite among hikers and mountain bikers, Train Wreck features graffiti train cars and spectacular views of Cheakamus River. The trail was built many decades ago. The Resort Municipality of Whistler's new pedestrian bridge creates a safe, legal access point. The bridge connects Train Wreck to the Sea to Sky trail, which is part of the Trans Canada Trail. Associated trail connections have also been built on either side of the bridge. The Train Wreck suspension bridge can be accessed off Jane Lakes Road in the Cheakamus Crossing neighbourhood at the south end of Whistler from two locations: the multi-use singletrack "Trash" trail or the double track Sea to Sky trail
Duration: 2-3 hours

- amymlongHouston, Texas217 contributionsBeautiful hike!My husband and I, along with two of our kids (22 & 18), took this hike on a recent trip to Whistler. It's a very easy hike and the bridge is awesome! It's in great shape and gives you incredible views of the river below. If you have a free hour in Whistler, you should definitely make the short drive to this hike - it's well worth it!Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten June 17, 2024
- Olufunto O3 contributionsGreat first hike experienceThe trail was easy, I went with a 2, 5 and 6 year old. Some parts were steep with high drops so we had to be careful. The trail took about 20 minutes to get there and 20 minutes back. Although I’m scared of heights the suspension bridge was not so bad. It was good to see the trains and read about the wreck. We’ll definitely go back when the kids are older.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 19, 2024
- Fairycakes158 contributionsIntresting short walkVery short and manageable route if you don't want a long hike. It's a well marked gravel trail and you can't really go wrong. There's a suspension bridge across the creak and a load of train wrecked carriages. Great for kids! If the first carpark is full there is an overflow futher up.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 20, 2024

...of my trip up the Sea to Sky Highway from Vancouver to Whistler. Well, maybe Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver competes. I love hiking, and I love street art and this place offers both. It's not really street art though - graffiti. If you get off the main trail and walk along the river, that even makes it more amazing. Great little waterfalls with the rushing water thrumming its thunderous song. I'm tripping. You know there was a nice group people out there - everybody having fun. A young man incessantly snapping shot of his kid. A real nice natural scene in beautiful weather. About 45°F. What great air! What great luck to be here. So happy I know how to make that luck happen.

It was awesome. Both the bridge and the train wreck. It is just something I haven't experienced so it's kind of a special experience.
Definitely something the whole family can do just now in Winter it was sometimes hard to find the path. We also should have worn snow pents and if you have... Bring your snowshoes. But definitely something you can do during bad weather or snow if you don't want to ride the mountain.

My husband had heard of this trail from friends so we made it a 'must do' when we spent Christmas in Whistler. It is a lovely trail, about a 30 minute hike to the train cars.... there are signs telling the story. The graffiti art is amazing and awesome to photograph with all the colour. There is a suspension bridge over the river which was also a fun experience. It was a little icy the day we went..... with a little more snow, I would suggest snow shoes. Great year round trail with options to hike other trails at the same time.

We visited Whistler recently and the Train Wreck was on our to do list, it is not well sign posted from the main road. On arriving at the car park it is a pleasant 20 min stroll to the Wreck with information boards on the way. Well worth a visit.

It's an easy hike and historically interesting but compared to many other choices in the area, merely OK. I prefer one of the lakes or up the mountain. There are also a lot of mountain bikers who share the trail. There aren't any great views but it is a pleasant walk through the forest.

Short, non-strenuous hike. Great for kids and those who don't really like hiking because it's short, and there's a train wreck at the end! Not well marked but all trails lead to the wrecked boxcars. Hike beyond them for some great views of the river.

Easy family friendly trail. Mini suspension bridge and ample shade to protect from blazing sun. No problem with mosquitoes or horseflies that may be found on other trail. Some cool graffiti on the train cars. Trails shared with mountain bikers on the first portion. No railing along the cliffs past the rail cars so care with little kids that like to explore on their own.

A little tricky to find but Giggle maps will get you there! We had our 7 month old baby in her hiking stroller and got to the end fine. Nice day hike with a very cool suspension bridge and the train carriages at the end. A must see!

Yes, I believe so. Should really be leashed though as many small children and some steep areas.

What’re the chances of bumping into a bear on this walk? I’m from the UK and doubt I’d be able to remember what to do if I saw a bear.
Written May 11, 2019
Not very likely. It's a fairly busy trail and bears usually stay away from busy people areas. If you do happen to be alone on the trail (unlikely) then just make a bit of noise and you'll be fine. They don't want to be near humans and will stay clear if they hear you coming.

So how easy is this? Would this be too much for a 6-month pregnant woman in February? Thanks
Written January 24, 2019
I’m imagining there is a lot of snow on the trail right now. Trail markers are very hard to see in the summer and may be harder in winter. I’m not sure if the bridge would be safe. Definitely not easy to get help if any needed. Out of an abundance of caution I wouldn’t recommend it.

Would this be a good hike to do this weekend ? Trying to find some good hikes/walks to do in November.
Thanks!

This is an easy hike/walk - just an issue of good footwear depending on rain or snow
Written January 13, 2019
Bikes are allowed, but it is a narrow trail and you will be dodging a lot of pedestrians.

Hi. can anyone advise on how long would it take for you to walk from Whistler to the train crash site? We are hoping to come in early April. Also, is it relatively flat as both my husband and I are not great with hills/loads of steps due to medical conditions. Thank you.

From the village it is best to drive to Checkamus which is the very first set of lights if you are approaching Whistler from Vancouver (Function Junction is the other direction at lights)
Drive into village looking are and park.
It is an easy clear walk to train wreck.

What’s the situation on the ground around end May - beginning June? Any snow? Possible to hike without any snow shoes?
Written December 25, 2017
Snow unlikely. Snowshoes required would be extremely unlikely because a path would almost certainly be beaten down.

Hi People, I tried to find this place today but failed. Regrettably, I have to rush down to Vancouver tomorrow but I might give it a last go tomorrow en route. Leaving from Sundial Place, how can I get there? Thanks in advance.

Driving toward Whistler on 99, stop at Function Junction. Find a place to park in town or at the parking lot at the Valley Trail across hwy 99. Walk along the railway tracks along the Checkamus River. This track is used, so use some caution. We saw a train go by while walking. You can also start the walk along Miller Rd. to the end and the cut onto the trail. If you do, don't miss the Pure Bread bakery for a treat. As you walk farther you can avoid some the tracks off and on as the trail goes in and out from the tracks. Then the trail follows the trail to the train wreck site. It's a relatively flat easy hike with some great views of the Checkamus River and it's many falls. You can't miss the wreck site. We did it with a walking 4 year old and two younger kids on back pack carriers.

Could you walk this trail while pushing a baby stroller?
