I discovered the Riel House after a long walk from Winnipeg downtown in direction to south. I intend to visit the house alone, without guides, because my interest was mainly in what could be seen from the XIX th century construction made in the so called Red River System (or post on sill). But the young people from the staff convinced me to do a guided tour ($5.00). I don’t regret because the quality of the very young and nice Métis girl that guided me through the spaces and objects of the house was astonishing. It was interesting to know the story of Louis Riel and his family and the specific history of the site. Riel never lived in the house built in 1880 but his body laid in state for two days in December of 1885. The house was acquired by Parks Canada in 1969 and is now available to visit from July 1 to September 1. I think it is a good idea to visit the Riel House as a complement to the many other sites connected with Louis Riel Life in the Winnipeg French quarter (probably the most interesting will be the St Boniface Museum). Finally an advice: don’t do the same madness I did when I decided to go on foot from downtown: the car, the bus or a bike are naturally the right options.

While Riel House was a well-preserved site in a nice location, it lacked vibrancy. Upon arrival the staff stuck to themselves in a group and did not engage the visitors to interpret the history. We were only approached to pay the entry fee and to pay for souvenirs.
Perhaps they make more of an effort with visiting school groups.
The grounds and gardens were well maintained.
Unfortunately we did not get a good interpretation of the Métis traditions.
After making the long trip from Toronto, we were disappointed.

My kids like coming here. On Thursday nights in the summer they have activities for kids and fiddling. Often there are days where there is free corn or bannock.

Learned so much about Manitoba and Riel, and at $5/adult for a guided and personal tour, you can't beat this attraction.

The history of Manitoba has changed alot over the years and especially from what my parents were taught in school to what I was taught 30 years latter. The staff are fairly knowledgeable however depending on who you get tend to... exaggerate the facts especially towards the Reil family members. Having done projects at a university level for terms papers a felt quite comfortable argueing a few points with them however a person who is not as familar with the material might take the version at face value. Just a note. I'm not sure if the house is still open they were taking about closing it after the summer of 2012.

This is the Riel family home depicted during the time Louis was brought to lay in state. Grounds garden maintained by period tools. Can be a quick tour or nice spot for a picnic.

We’ve been here twice. We went the first time for the Festival du Voyageur, and the second time for the Enigma Escape from the Fort games day. Both times we were very impressed by the authenticity of the area without it being boring or stuffy. The staff and the grounds make it a very fun way to learn about Canada’s history.

Riel,is "The Father of Manitoba". Riel is to Canada what Nelson Mandela is to South Africa, or what Dr. Martin Luther King was to the United States. His home is just a building, yes. It is what emanated from that building that it's preservation hope to preserve. Been past it many times. Note,my visit date is wrong

I went here in the off-season with the thought that there would be much more to see than there was. The site is small and only has the one building, which was closed when I was there. I'm not sure it would be worth returning to.

We were very pleased at how informative the guides (dressed in period attire) were in explaining both Metis culture and the history of both the house and the Riel family. Its a small site, but very interesting. The estate belonged to the Riel family and Louis Riel lay'd in state in the Parlour before finally being put to rest.
