Majestic Anglican cathedral church in downtown Fredericton was consecrated in 1853. It is built in the Gothic Revival style. I did not go in – it was closed when I passed, but I did view the interior online. The cathedral was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1983. It is the only Cathedral in Canada that is not itself a parish.

When visiting a temple, you expect at least to see someone. It is a beautiful place, but lacks life. Unfortunately.

We stopped in on a cool, cloudy day and we really enjoyed our visit. The stained glass windows are beautiful and the pipe organ is magnificent. The curator gives guided tours and also plays the organ. He gives a great history of the church and the first bishop. Apparently the church is also haunted. The houses around the neighborhood are lovely and worth a drive around the block as well. Well worth the time spent to see this church and area.

We had a 4.5 hour layover in Fredericton on a flight back from Halifax to Toronto. After a short (15-18 minutes taxi ride) downtown, we had a fair bit of time to poke around. This started as a bit of a "let's make lemonade out of lemons" approach to the layover. What we discovered of Fredericton delighted us and inspired us to want to plan a much longer stay next time!

Our final "bit item" in our short layover was a noon-hour concert here. It is part of a regular summer series. For being a relatively small town, Fredericton did itself proud with the number of people who showed up for the concert. The 17 July 2015 concert was a bit bizarre because a squirrel had shorted-out a transformer, cutting power to much of the east-side of the city. The concert, thankfully not requiring electronic amplifiers, proceeded under a combination of light filtering in through the clerestory windows and candles! It is a priceless memory!

This church is an exact copy of a church in England. It must feel at home in the rain. Not being one to encourage copying in general, this copy is in the right place. The people for who it was built must have appreciated this building that reminded them so well of home.

The building is gorgeous and full of history, with lovely and uplifting atmosphere. The surroundings are beautiful too. After the afternoon concert on a Friday you can take a tour of the cathedral and then stroll along the river and across the bridge to the north side of Fredericton. Support the cathedral to preserve and celebrate out history and culture, and this wonderful landmark of Fredericton.

Unusual to be able to walk in with no one in the church. Built in the 1850’s and modelled after a much older church in England, the stained glass in particular is very beautiful. Located near the Beaverbrook Gallery continue walking down the river along Woodstock Way to see some beautiful homes.
