About
The largest Neoclassical Roman Catholic Cathedral built by the International Irish diaspora in the 19th century, and the largest cathedral church in Canada. Begun as the dream of Bishop Michael Fleming (1792-1850) who became bishop 1829. He inherited a chapel holding 300 but needed to seat 10,000. Fleming made five round trips to England to obtain the land, after which the church took 14 years to build. The sermon at the opening in 1855 was preached by Archbishop John Hughes of New York, who returned home inspired to build St. Patrick's Cathedral. Exceptional stained glass windows by English, and French artists pre-date and survived the Great Fire of St. John's in 1892. The Basilica holds the best collection of neoclassical statuary in the western hemisphere by Hogan, Carew, Ghersi, and Aureli. The pipe organ is one of the largest in Canada with 4050 pipes and 66 stops, and speaks in an exceptional acoustic environment with 2.9 seconds of reverberation.

- oriel bToronto, Canada182 contributionsWhat an impressive site!We visited during Covid times so it was a bit tricky to get inside. During the day they only allowed visitors from 11 to 12 noon and for masses you had to register online. Luckily we were there just before 11am and were able to go inside wearing a mask of course, and walk around the Basilica. It is absolutely beautiful! The ceiling, the altar, everything was just breath taking.Visited August 2020Written September 10, 2020
- Floyd SCedar Rapids, Iowa368 contributionsImposing and beautiful, well worth a visitFranciscan Irishman Michael Fleming wanted to build a church large enough to seat all the Irish Catholics in St. Johns. He succeeded. Built between 1841-1855, when it opened in 1855 it could hold 2,500 worshippers and was the largest church building in North America. I visited twice, once to view the gorgeous interior, ornamental plaster ceiling, and have a free tour from the knowledgeable tour guide, and also to attend Sunday service.Visited August 2023Travelled soloWritten August 19, 2023

Indeed, the young tour guides are exceptional in sharing their knowledge and histories and faith of the people who came fishing here from other countries. Such a lovely cathedral it is and well worth a visit!Visited July 2022Written August 4, 2022

This Church is a piece of history and very well preserved with some amazing stained glass windows. The only problem was that you could not go inside which was to bad.

Went for dinner out with friends to celebrate life since covid times
Look forward to eating locally in a small village
The service was not there but on arrival no greeting ignored at all in fact ignored
Most of the menu was not available no fish except fried
Lasagne no !! Beginning to think why did we choose this venue
Nothing will bring me back to dine or recommend to friends
Very disappointing

Super beautiful church. So worth a visit. It was not open for visitors yet, so we went to Sunday mass and took in the views after service. Simply breathtaking!

The ceiling and the stained glass windows are not to be missed. Also, we had an informal tour and historical background from one of the parishioners who was there in the afternoon that we visited. Frankly, we may not have gone there, except that it was raining, and I feel lucky that we were able to see it. Also, the sculpture of the Veiled Virgin is in the convent next door, and that is definitely not to be missed; it is one of the premier artworks in North America.

Found this church on the Ecclesiastical Walking tour. This one has some notable architectural differences from others which makes the tour informative.

During my trip to St Johns I also spent time visiting the Basilica. I have visited before in winter 2018 so it was lovely to see in the summer sun. As well as taking time to observe my faith, I took a stroll looking at the history of the building and speaking with some of the staff, one of whom had good, (and passionate), insight.

I go to churches for the music. The pipe organ here is fantastic. The architecture is awesome. I went to the 11am mass on Sunday. A great experience!
