- Mike from Rival TownNiagara Falls, Canada1,123 contributionsFun area! This place was definitely always live! So much going on with a lot of fun people. We always enjoyed walking through here and drinking. It reminds me of Hess Village back in Hamilton, ON except way better!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 12, 2024
- Inspiration71746685 contributionsGeorge Street, still the lively fun place to enjoy yourselves. It was a long weekend getaway for us, and it was over 3 decades since we had been to St. John's. George Street was on our list. No disappointment here. We truly enjoyed the meandering listening to the local tunes echoing from the doorways of the many pubs and eateries. Special mentions: Venus and Sara were awesome at Greensleeves and made my birthday extra special! As well, they tuned the TV to golf for Hubby, so he was content! Happy Hour Caesers... wow, Sara knows how to make 'em! Arin and Glen at Bridie Malloy's were fantastic staff, and the "Moose Burger" was delicious. We usually don't like gamey meat, but it wasn't an issue with the chef's preparation. The Martini Bar on Sunday was less busy than Saturday so we opted to try a couple. Mine was made exactly the way I like it. You can sit on an upper deck as well as one at street level. Overall, enjoyable and something for everyone; including a sweet little lad, shades on, "driving" his hot little red car down the street while Mom and Dad sauntered behind. What a way to keep him entertained. (Street closed for pedestrian travel. )Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten July 23, 2024
- Thomas VOakland, California18,963 contributionsThe Irish PubsThis is my favorite part of town because it is the best location for the famous Irish pubs with very good live music. We had dinner at O'Reilly's and wandered around. Honky tonk but safe and great fun.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 7, 2024

Weeknights are much calmer than weekends. George street has a lively vibe and hosts locals and visitors of all ages. You can get screeched in easily for about $25 at several bars. Some charge cover, some do not. I highly recommend visiting Christians Pub (and getting screeched in there) as well as the Shamrock pub. I felt very safe even into the late hours of the night. Lots of live music. The street is closed off to traffic. Relatively clean, quite a few homeless begging for change.
COVID-19: some locations were taking contact info for contact tracing, some had staff wearing masks, others had no masks and no social distancing whatsoever. It varied by the bar.

George Street is the well-known party zone in St. John's. The short street is lined with pubs, bars and restaurants and comes alive at night with live music and lots of people. If you go in the day, you can enjoy a drink on an outdoor patio and watch the clean-up from the night before and the preparations for the evening to come. There are interesting murals, statues and other decors too.

George Street has always been a favourite of ours when in St John’s. So much great music in so many bars. Celtic music, rock music, country music as you walk along George. Each bar has music and some without a cover charge. If you love music you will love George Street

Don't go unless you are under 25. Cheesey College Bar atmosphere. Two guys fighting in the street- one knocked unconscious and the other ripped his shirt off and flexed down the street while 15 girls swooned. Not Newfoundland's greatest...
DEFINITELY don't come with families/kids/teens.

Love George Street and the people there that make it great. From "Lotties" to the "Cotton Club". This magnificent street is a great experience to behold (although it may be dangerous after 3am), George Street will always have a place in my heart!

Great street! It has it all for a good time on The Rock.
Some of the pubs don't have great food though... some of them do but there are more pubs with bad food than great food.
I highly recommend eating BEFORE heading out there... there are plenty of other options around town.

I mean if you are in St. John's, you have to visit the infamous George Street. To be honest, I'm not quite sure what the hype is. Lots of old pubs mainly, that could use a sprucing up. Not comparable to the bar district in Dublin and I actually prefer Water Street for better food and nicer pubs. It wasn't even as busy as Water Street while we were in town.

For anyone reading this who hasn't been to George Street, my heart goes out to you.
I mean one street of nothing but pubs, dance clubs and the best sausage dogs you have ever had. Marti Gras is on the way and I've got my costume in the works (sexy Snow White).
So get on the friggin'go and come for a party on George.

Our usual trips consist of tropical vacations. But for a change we decided to tour Canada. We did Niagra Falls, Beautiful british Columbia, the Canadian Rockies in Alberta... and then Newfoundland. WOW...... WHY DIDN'T I GO SOONER... IT WAS SOOOOOOO MUCH FUN! While arriving in a newly renovated airport we were greeted with a twisted...but catchy irish accent and a friendly nod. we headed into the capital city (st. john's). Everyone was going about their daily business and we pretty much went unnoticed and blended in with the small crowd. But as soon as you mention that it was your first visit to "the Rock" we were overwhelmed by friendly folks who offered to give us some helpful pointers about dining, pubs, and things to see. We were even offered back to a few homes for some traditional food..... in which we actually did. Only in a place like this would you get away with going home with strangers... but once your there you'll find out for yourself just how open-hearted, genuine, and tight knit this culture really is. while at "these stangers" home... who felt more like long lost family.... we had some of the most amazing meals.... yes.... I said mealSSSS!!!! the first day was Cod Tounges....which I thought was just amazing.... a little salty for the untrained but tasty all the same. the next sunday was a traditional "jiggs diner" ....again they love the salt (obviously ....they live off the ocean for the most part). another meal you have to try is fried bread dough which they call "toutons".... they were sooooo good. I really like the molasses rather than the pancake syrup on them.
while there we did sooo much, Whale watching, bird watching, saw the lighthouses, visited the most easterly point in North America, learned soooo much aboout the oldest city in Canada. It really is beautiful.
But the best part by far was GEORGE STREET. The last weekend of July ( or it could of been the first week of august) there was a festival called GEORGE STREET FESTIVAL. We haven't partied like that in years. they close off all the strrets and we were permitted to roam the streets drinking, listining to the live Bands and mingled with locals. We met the most amazing people. there are actually multiple streets housing bars in the basement, main level and up stairs... they are mainly row houses with places to look and go in every window and door. we were surprised when we were in a pub looking for the bathroom when we opened a door to a dance club.... this place has nothing on Mardi Gras. the people party here like it's Mardi Gras EVERYDAY....and Afternoon .... and Night!!!!
We stayed in St. John's (the Fairmont....with a beautiful view) then we stayed with friends we met in the sity's suburbs Conception Bay South.... Beautiful... you can see the ocean from the mainhighway which is miles and miles and miles long. and 40miles/ hour so you can enjoy the view.
I LOVED THE PEOPLE AND THE FOOD IN NEWFOUNDLAND!!!

you have to stop in to Quidi Vidi brewery. great brewery where you can buy a case of their in house made beers and have a few right there on the deck, or their upstairs is a tap house where they sell them as well. Friday nights they have a Newfoundland style kitchen party there with music and everything. very popular so come early if you want to get your pick of the seats! lots of tours going on when the cruise ships are in town but more of a locals spot on the Friday evenings.

Hi, Elnora. What would you like to know about this attraction?what time on George st. is a better time to go there in august
Written March 3, 2018
It is a very short street with a handful of bars. Early Aug would be busy with tourists and late Aug busy with university students returning to school.

I am heading to St. John's Nov 30 - Dec 2nd. Shopping, Pubs and Music, any suggestions?

Depends on what you are looking for. There are bars that cater to younger crowds and there are those that cater to older clientele. There are also bars that serve food and those that do not

Hi!
What are the prices like on George Street?
Looking for the typical cost of:
A beer
A wine
A meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner)
I'm planning a trip and trying to budget it out.
Thank you for your help!

We will be attending the Festival this summer and hoping you can help with my question. I see that there are tickets for sale for performances. Are these tickets for that performance or is it for access to the street? Not sure whether to order tickets ahead of time as not sure exactly what they are for. Sent an email to their website but no reply.
Hope you can clarify for us
thanks
Lori
