Boyle Tours, a historical walk around St. John's, is a great way for visitors to see the beautiful city. Jed was a wonderful guide with lots of wonderful stories mixed with historical information. The walk was well paced, lots of time for questions and discussion. I would highly recommend this to new visitors to the beautiful old city.

Jed was an excellent story teller. As a local he had all the good stories with some he was present for due to his age as a retiree. The history is astounding and at time unbelievable! We had a little one in a stroller, and the tour was suitable for this situation. The tour was informative, and an appropriate pace for walking.

A great way to start your trip in St. John's. The guide, Michael Boyle, is filled with stories and historical anecdotes. From the Government Building to the Jelly Bean Row Houses, he leads the group up and down the narrow, hilly streets of St. John's.

My wife and I booked a walking tour with Michael Boyle. We chose it because he was highly rated on many websites including Tripadvisor.
Whenever we visit a city for the first time, we always try to go on a walking tour. It gives us a feel for the city and its way of life. We found that it is very difficult for a tour guide to pitch his/her talk at the right level. Everyone in attendance want something different from the tour. Some tour guides go deeply into the history of the city, citing many battles and baffling us with dates, great for historians, but not for us as a first introduction to the city. Others move along at a frantic pace, briefly pointing out various landmarks Of course many pitch it at the right level for us. Michael Doyle falls into this category and he does it in a very entertaining way. I could go on to describe the way in which he makes it entertaining but that would spoil the show for you.

Pros
Right amount of detail (for us)
Great knowledge of his city
Highly entertaining with a quirky sense of humor
Perfect timing
Looks the part with his top hat etc

Cons
Wished the tour went on for longer.

First of all PAT S. Thanks for taking time to make such insightful comments on the immense value of all historical walking tours and of course- on my own tour of St Johns.Indeed you hit the nail on the head and it is a balancing act in that today many people on the tour are looking for a unique interesting and enjoyable experiences. Recorded history is in the archives - our tours are not your old boring history classes at High school or University. In a way we are seminar on the street. Thanks for your great observations and readers will see that personal service is something we aim at For example -we are really keen to keep all tours to a maximum of twenty five people and that means booking ahead is really very important. And you are correct the tour could be a bit longer. Indeed we are looking at adding one more stop for next year. For example it will be the 100th anniversary of the first Trans Atlantic flight from Newfoundland to Ireland in June 1919.We will cover that on the tour. Thanks again so much for your comments. Michael B

We started off by showing up a few minutes late and instead of taking off he added a little historical story for the group and waited for us,,such a gentlemen. Couldn’t get enough we could have listened to him for hours, he provides historical facts with colourful deleivery and little known insights.

We thoroughly enjoyed Boyle’s walking tour of St John’s. Michael is as colourful as the houses of St Johns. He is charming and knowledgeable about the stories and history of St John’s. He reenacts historical moments with great flare leaving us with lasting memories. The tour group was small and the whole experience was wonderful. We highly recommend this tour

Our July 1 Memorial Day/Canada Day evening walk is a always special one. Many thanks coco57 for taking the time to provide such positive feed back. We had a small group but a very interactive and super interested group. I really enjoyed your observations and questions. A new feature of the tour was the special statute in Bannerman Park to remember the soldiers coming home from the war. I appreciate your amazing comments but I am merely the guide and as you say our historic city is the main character with the colourful houses.I am happy to help provide enjoyable cultural and historical experiences.. We booked a tour with Michael somewhat last minute near the end of our two week trip around Newfoundland, and we are so happy we did! It was a drizzly day but our entire group had an excellent time and didn’t even notice the weather. Michael knows a ton about the city, and can deliver an excellent dramatic re-enactment. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to learn about the history of St John’s and see some of its most colourful side streets!

What a fine start to our vacation on the Avalon Peninsula! When Michael Boyle met us for the start of the tour wearing his bowler hat, I knew this was going to be fun. The tour was not only fun, but so chock full of Newfoundland history. Walking the unique and historic streets of St. John's on a lovely, sunny, summer's day was a step back in time. Michael's very knowledgeable and informative narrative was beyond awesome---a terrific orientation to what turned out to be a top highlight of our Newfoundland trip. One tip: Wear comfy walking shoes. Thank you, Michael, for your lovely tour. Highly recommend!

First of all Mary Jane -thanks for taking time to reflect on your enjoyable experience with Boyle tours. Our tours are about presenting history in a dramatic way..No stodgy university history lecture here - because it vital to have an interactive tour. Questions and observations from the group add life and excitement to our tour. Now I must say I cant always provide a sunny day but we do provide an educational and memorable experience of this place we call home. THANKS
