About
Cut from the ancient rock of Signal Hill in St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador, the Johnson Geo Centre takes you deep underground to experience the story of planet Earth. Discover our planet's incredible history, discover the vast species of corals that live off our coast in the Gardens of the Deep exhibit, learn about the volcanoes, earthquakes, and natural forces that shape the very ground beneath our feet, and so much more. Explore the interactive exhibits on your own or join our interpreters on a guided tour. The kids will love playing in the Hibernia KidsPlace and experiencing our multimedia film complete with rain and lightning. Be sure to visit Geo Gifts to find the perfect keepsake. Then, take your learning outside with a walk through our Geo Vista Park. At the Johnson Geo Centre, we'll show you Earth from the inside, out! The Geo Centre is wheelchair accessible and offers free, off-street parking. Bus parking also available.

It was raining at signal hill so I thought I would stop in. It may be great for kids but I did not find it that interesting. Everything is underground and you get to see the different rock formations but there is not a lot else. I would recommend going to the Rooms instead if it is a rainy day, much more to see

We wanted to learn more about the geology of Newfoundland and that's exactly what we got. The staff were very friendly. The exhibit was well laid out. Social distancing was easy to maintain with the order of the exhibits. Worth a visit.

My first time to Newfoundland was a short trip I took on May 23 through 27, 2019. During the course of that trip I went to the John Geo Centre. I had just walked the Signal Hill trail and, on my descent, I stopped in at the Geo Centre. I am so glad that I did go, as there is a ton to see. You could comfortably spend about 2-3 hours there. It is a great geological wonderland. There are about 9 or 10 major attractions within the Geo Centre. For example, there is an ExxonMobil Oil & Gas Gallery that deals with the extraction of oil from Hibernia. There is a a fantastic exhibition for the Titanic called the Titanic Story. It includes a detailed account of the voyage. Other exhibitions include Our Future & Space, Our Solar System, Our Province, etc. It was all very informative. I was never bored.

I stopped off at the Geo Cafe after my tour for a really awesome hot chocolate.

For anyone travelling to St. John's, I would strongly recommend a visit to the Geo Centre.

What a great location built in the granite of the rocks of St.John’s. A visionary man created this Mr Johnson.
This is a place to learn more about the stony history.
Fine place for children too!

This is a wonderful geological interpretation center located on Signal Hill in St. John's. Inside and outside the center, the whole family will enjoy spending time here. 14 very unique attractions to explore in the underground attraction. Well worth the visit! :)

We spent several happy hours at the GeoCentre, the shop and cafe on a bitterly cold day. It was far more than just somewhere to keep warm, well worth a visit to learn the geology of the area. The Titanic exhibition is an added bonus.

The Johnson Geo Centre was ceded to Memorial University in St. John's was announced this past September and the University will be expanding the centre. The geology of Newfoundland is complex as a whole so the local geology around St. John's is well explained. Esso/Mobile have an excellent display on what the oil industry generates in products, services and the protection of the environment, the best programs in the world. There is also an excellent area describing the sinking of the Titanic. All very fascinating. The gift shop has some nice items and drinks are available. There is no cafeteria. Seniors prices or CAA/AAA discounts available. Well worth a visit.

This indoors location is by far my most favorable when it is the depth and Span information you seek re this Rock , this island we call home. They have done a superb job. When finished with the visit you can see lots of geological examples around Signal Hill, East Coast Trail, Cripple Cove / Cape St Francis ( volcanic Pillows ) etc.

We did not have as much time as we needed to do this justice. The geology information is staggering. I would have liked to spend more time on the Titanic exhibit, which unravels some of the myths surrounding the tragedy. A lot of "fake news" surrounds this event and the exhibit debunks it. It was fascinating.

Thank you for the review! We are so glad you enjoyed our centre. While we do cover a variety of topics from oceans to space in our interactive exhibits, the Titanic Story is certainly our most popular gallery! We hope you will visit us again soon!

This was a stop of the hop on hop off bus tour we weren't familiar with and were very glad we went in. We spent a surprising amount of time here. The displays were interesting and ranged from geological to offshore oil to what really led to the Titanic sinking. The gift shop had some interesting items, with many locally sourced which is always a bonus.
