The views were amazing. Parking is impossible. Unless you’re gonna be parking on private property which is a big no-no. The ocean is massive and yet again it was a windy day. Welcome to Newfoundland . Wonderful, Newfoundland . It was nice to see “the battery” from across the port …so beautiful.

A nice walk and a great spot to watch a ship going in or out on a nice day. There is minimal interpretive information about the Fort.

Not alot to see at Fort Amherst, but it is a pleasant walk and forms part of the East Coast Trail. Nice view of The Battery and Signal Hill.

Such a cool little lighthouse and support buildings. This is the quintessential Newfoundland picture!

Fort Amherst kf which only a plaque remains offers a Nice view of the harbour of St John’s .
Several hiking trails start here.
There are no buildings to tour only a plaque remains of the Fort that stood here.

Took a nice little stroll out to Fort Amherst this evening. Weather was great. Short little hike to get to the lighthouse from the parking area along a paved road. Nice view of the Battery from this area. Peaceful to sit for a bit and watch people walking the Signal Hill trail wondering how they ever made that trail. Things you don't think about from that side. Nice view of St. John's Harbour area. Walking trail access as you walk up the road. Nothing to do here but a nice, peaceful evening stroll all the same and take a few pictures.

Gives an entirely different perspective of the harbour and view of Signal Hill. And the stories of how the lighthouse keeper was supplied in its earlier years was revealing. Of course, the view out to the Atlantic and down the coast to Cape Spear are added bonuses.

I love lighthouses. This lighthouse is the traditional red and white Canadian lighthouse with a scenic view of the bay. The view is very nice with a panoramic view of the harbor and you can see Cabot Tower from here. The first lighthouse was built here in 1810 and there is remains of a fort built to protect against German U-boats in WWII. The problem is that the road to get here is a bit narrow. Then you have to park about 15 minutes away and walk the rest of the way up a hill. There is a private home across from the lighthouse. It is very nice that they allow people to come here to see it on their property but the path to walk here is actually a private driveway. When you get there, it is a nice view but you can’t go inside and the fort is fenced off. I didn’t see much information about it. To me, I would rather spend my time at Cape spear or Signal Hill.

This lighthouse is well viewed from the other side of the inlet up by Cabot Tower. After parking and walking a fairly long way up an incline, you arrive at a reasonably small lighthouse but with good views of Cabot Hill and the coast in the other direction.

There is not a lot to see. The site is not well maintained. The lighthouse is not impressive, is small, and is not open.

This could easily be skipped given all there is to do in the area.

We visited July 2 2019 and wasn't going to walk to the top , however after chatting with another visitor we changed our mind s and so happy we did, it was worth the uphill trek for two seniors and we would recommend anyone going to make sure they do it also. Got some amazing photos.
