About
Memorial University Botanical Garden is the province's only botanical garden, consisting of 44 hectares of cultivated gardens & nature trails, surrounding beautiful Oxen Pond. The trails and flower gardens are open seasonally, May - November. The Garden was established in 1971 as a center for botanical, horticultural and environmental research and education, and has been developed to display plants native to the province plus cultivated plants suitable to the local climate, and to provide access to native habitats through a system of hiking trails. Recognized for advancing and enriching sustainable relationships among people, plants, and the environment, the Garden seeks to foster an appreciation of Newfoundland's natural history in the development and future of the university and the province. The Botanical Garden is located at 306 Mount Scio Road, just minutes from downtown St. John's and north of the main Memorial University campus. It is located within Pippy Park.

Even if you are not a huge plant lover this is a great place to visit. Lot of beautiful flowers and trees and shrubs. Nice walking trails. Wear comfortable shoes as you can chose to walk many trails. Small gift shop and cafe too.

So easy to walk through the many beautiful themed gardens. Lush flowers blooming, many unusual plants, and little gnome 'houses' are tucked into clever little spaces. Be sure to stop in the Postmaster's Garden Cafe for a delicious lunch.

We were there in late May and things were just beginning to bloom. We found the garden areas were quite small. Most of the area is natural forest with trails around the lake. We enjoyed the mini greenhouse and the late spring blossoms. Many trails were hilly so some exertion is necessary! The staff were friendly and helpful and there was a small gift shop as well.

The trails are lovely and the representation of Newfoundland botanical biodiversity is excellent. Given the short growing season, the beauty and diversity of the gardens in August are striking.

Beautiful and diverse flora, just enough to get a taste of the province's natural environment. The gardens are lovely. Trails are well maintained and signalled and the lookout provides an amazing view. The staff is very helpful too. Can't wait for winter to be over and visit again.

We took a self guided tour of the gardens to understand the local fauna of Newfoundland and Labrador. The trails are well marked with explanations of the trees, flowers, mosses, lichens and grasses. It is a great place for forest bathing and if you have not experience a moss cover landscape, this is the place to be. Useful to bring along sturdy walking shoes, field glasses, and camera. You can spend as little as a couple of hours or a full day. There is an exquisite café on site serving regional cuisine. Well worth the visit.

We stopped by on a rainy afternoon, but we had our raincoats so we spent about an hour and a half wandering through the gardens. It was very pleasant. The gardens aren't large or concentrated, but instead are small and spread out along several walks and short trails.
