About
The Peter Lewis Gallery is a unique downtown heritage space, home to the work of artists who find inspiration in the colourful elements and brash landscapes of Eastern Canada. Peter's own work is informed by an impressionist's eye, detailed settings from here in his home province and those he has been inspired to capture during his international travels.

Peter Lewis Gallery
Love of Newfoundland
Jean A. Vachon
ST-JOHN, NL - Walking on Church Street in St-John, Newfoundland with my wife, I found pleasure in photographing the colorful Victorian houses on this street when we came upon the Peter Lewis Gallery.
Curiosity and a beautiful painting in the window prompted me to visit the gallery.
Overlooking the city of St-John, the four story house is an art treasure.
Upon entering I saw an artist talking to a group of people about his creation in progress, a scene from St-John.
Alone with the artist, I took pictures of him and his paintings before interviewing Peter Lewis in person and meeting his wife Tracey.
Biography
Of English origin, the artist admitted to travelling all over the world and being first an elementary Phys Ed teacher and a long distance runner before discovering his true interest: painting.
This interest developed later in life.
Inspiration
Raised in a family of eight in St John, he was mostly inspired by impressionist painters such as Van Gogh, Monet and Pissarro. He also admires the paintings of Canadian artists Tom Thompson and A.Y. Jackson of the group of seven.
Obsessed by the island of Newfoundland where he grew up, he now paints full time, scenes of St-John and fishing villages. The culture of this land constantly guides him in his artistic creations.
He most often works large scale with pallet knife, brush and oils to represent colourfully in a “blurry and poetic way” the Newfoundland scenery.
After the sharing of these informations, I took an immense pleasure in admiring the architecture of the building and the numerous wonderful paintings decorating the premises.
The Peter Lewis Gallery was a bit like visiting St-John and Newfoundland condensed in an attractive house!

We were walking around town and passed by this gallery so we took a look at what was displayed. Some very well-made paintings, set in frames, ready for sale.

This is a pleasant three story gallery in a previous house. The art work is beautiful and largely focuses on Newfoundland by artists that are local and from away. There is also artwork with themes from off the Island.

Parking is difficult to find nearby. The collection was a new show by the shop owner Peter Ellis and two others. The art definitely captures the feeling of Newfoundland.

If you have not traveled along the South West Coast of our Province then you have missed something that is stunning in it's beauty -- a location that should be turned into a Marine Park. As one who has traveled here with fellow hikers and being dropped off for 6-7 days of coastal hiking you are given the rare experience of the Beauty of this area. Peter Lewis ( I did not know he was the one I lined up several rows back to run the Tely 10) has accomplished in his painting this relatively unexplored regions of this 'isolated' area of the province. Through his paintings we relived some very fond memories, one in particular for me. IT was looking along the coast early one morning as the sun rose and seeing what I thought was a stretch of Big Sur in California. It cost nothing to view these paintings and I am sure his capturing of the vista of the area will grace some lucky walls. Definitely worthy of a visit.
