About
Since 1982, McCarthy's Party has specialized in delivering tours of Newfoundland and Labrador. Committed to providing you with an authentic experience, we offer a total immersion in the culture - Newfoundland and Labrador style. Visiting people in their homes, chatting with fishermen, enjoying teas and lunches with community groups... whale watching, puffin and iceberg sighting, experiencing the culture... learning about the way of life, the language of the sea and the songs of the ocean Our slogan "Let The Locals Be Your Guide" sums up one of the great qualities of our escorted tours. Our guides grew up in the province and are the best source for information on the culture, history, music and language that make this area so unique. They know off the beaten path locations where our groups see the spectacular scenery and wildlife of Newfoundland. Your local guide will provide you with an authentic Newfoundland experience that will be both educational and thoroughly enjoyable

The tour was so good , we only ventured a couple hours a few days out of St John’s but what we saw was absolutely beautiful . Our guide, Dave Welshman was amazing . He entertained us and was a wealth of information (both for the tour and for doing things on our own ). I would highly recommend this tour and if you get Dave as your guide , even better !

It was definitely one of the best guided tours if ever been on. Everyone went the extra mile to make this company a success. Tom the guide was so knowledgeable and very funny.

Newfoundland emptied my bucket list. My wife, a daughter and I had the time of our lives exploring "the Rock". Luckily for us we hired Tours by Helen to show us the wonderful Province. She gave us an incredible experience that has continued with us months later. Seeing the views, learning the history, mixing with some of the world's greatest people and just plain enjoying ourselves. We answered "Why did you come here?" by saying the PEOPLE who lived up to their reputation as being as good-natured as any group in the world. One gentleman, Jerome, said that we are small but have great history. I totally agree. The entire trip still swirls through me after being exposed to the raw beauty, the graciousness of the Newfoundlanders and the fun everywhere. It had been on my mind to visit for 15 years and am so happy to have explored Newfoundland. We are again indebted to Tours by Helen for her expertise, knowledge and perfect personality. We were with Helen every single day and felt that we became friends by the last day. I'd go back in a second!

We did the three hour city tour and I would recommend as a team building event if you are in St.John's and have a free afternoon. Our tour guide, Larry Hann, was very informative and passionate about the city. He has lots of history to share and made it a memorable trip.

We spent first full day of our mother/daughters Newfoundland trip on an Irish Loop tour with our guide Steve. It was excellent and we had such fun seeing the spectacular sights and meeting the locals at our stops. Five stars all day long!

My husband and I did the 5 day tour , it was exceptional. Dave was our tour guide , we were really impressed with his knowledge of St.Johns, Newfoundland. He had a great sense of humour.
He was also very helpful with giving us ideas where to go for dinner.
We would highly recommend Dave.

Our group did two of the tours in the four days we had in St John’s. The first was the half day city and Cape Spear - it was awesome - saves a ton of time because you are immediately oriented! The second was the Irish Loop, a full day full of wonderful vistas and information. It was a little late in the year so some things were closed but we thoroughly enjoyed it. Shout out to our tour host Larry Hann - we had Larry both days and he was both full of information and a hoot! Thanks a lot!

Great tour! A nice way to see the city and surroundings if you do not have too much time.
Our tour guides Larry Hann and Steve Watson were great - they told us some local folk stories in addition to the history of the sights we saw.

Such an incredible tour! A nice way to see the city if you're pressed for time. My tour guide (Steve Watson) was great - he told us some local folk stories in addition to the history of the sights we saw. 10/10 recommend.

What size is the group for your 12-day tour?
McCarthysParty
St. John's, Canada2 contributions
Years ago our Mother set the standard of 36 people in a 57 passenger coach. The coach provides a great ride and lots of leg room - especially with so many open seats. The number is ideal for social engagement as you will get to meet all the crowd. Its a great party size that still allows us to use more intimate dining locations, smaller washroom breaks and quick loading and debarking times
Thanks for your interest

Are half day tours on large buses, or are they small group tours.
McCarthysParty
St. John's, Canada2 contributions
Hi 268pasha,
They are small group tours. Our largest vehicle is a 23 passenger mini-coach and we have multiple 15 passenger vans. We never fill the vehicles to capacity, preferring to leave some empty seats so the guests will have plenty of room and enjoy all the benefits of a smaller group. Our half day tours run every day, with a minimum of 4 people.

How close does the boat get to the puffins on the Bird Island tour? Do we get off the boat on the island? Can you get good photos? We will be there in late summer 2019.

Hi, Thanks for your email and a great question. The response above is quite accurate and the bird island tour inspired me to purchase another camera. I used to carry a camera all the time but abandoned it when the new smart phones offered such wonderful camera options. Its only in situations like this where you really need the long lens but its only for the purpose of true intimacy. We actually get within meters of the birds but for those really good close shots a camera with a 75-300 lens works really well. All the bird photos posted on our trip adviser site are taken with a camera rebel from the bird island boat tours. But if you're only taking pictures with your mind - we get more than close to the islands. Thanks again

We will be spending one day, from a cruise ship, in St. Johns. Would one of your tours be possible? Which would you recommend as this is our first time in St. Johns.

If our cruise ship cannot make it into St. John, will our prepaid fee be returned?

We will be aboard a cruise ship in late September 2018. Several years ago we did this same cruise & the ship could not get in due to weather. If we prepay for a tour of St. John & Cape Spear with McCarthy’s party, will we be credited or is this a hassle trying to retrieve?
McCarthysParty
St. John's, Canada2 contributions
Shouldn't be any problem at all. You will be refunded right away.

Hello, we are interested in seeing the following highlights:
The Spout (a wave driven geyser), icebergs, lighthouses, cliffs, sea stacks, Berryhead Arch, cliffs, whales, waterfalls. Would you be able give me a quote for 4 people?
Thanks,
Cathy

Hello and thanks for your inquiry. Though I have to admit, this is tough to address on a forum since we would have to design a custom itinerary to accommodate such a trip. Please call our office at 1888 660 6060

We are looking for a last minute trip for a family of 3. Wondering if the multi-day trips are kid-friendly with a 5 year old and can accommodations be made for this permutation in the lodgings used.

The best answer I can give is to call the company direct. I found them to be very forthcoming when answering my questions.
Are there tours of Icebergs or is it out of season

There are still icebergs to be seen around Newfoundland's coastal areas. I'm not sure if there are any near St Johns... you could contact the tour provider directly
