The weather changes on a moments notice in Yellowknife. So don't use weather predictions to guess if you will see the lights. Most nights they are visible, just some nights they're stronger than others. Sean's tours book far in advance, so if you don't have a reservation, you probably won't be able to go with him.

We booked Sean for 2 nights. Great auroras both nights. One woman who was traveling solo and had spent a week in Iceland with no luck. Her comment _"I've seen more in the first 5 minutes than I saw in a week in Iceland". We rented winter clothes on Sean's recommendation - well worth it. Totally comfortable for hours outside even though it was -44. Really.
We did dog sledding for 2 days too. We stayed at Super 8 - don't - it was less than ordinary. The Heritage museum in town is great.
A point and shoot camera won't give you good photos. A DSLR is a better choice. Sean will help with photography and can lend you a tripod if you let him know ahead of time. Extra camera batteries are a must.
Hope that helps.
