Prelude Lake is a water lover’s dream. The largest developed park on the Ingraham Trail, it has numerous facilities to enjoy and 79 campsites to choose from (67 non-powered and 12 tent pads). There is a sandy beach where you can enjoy a wide range of water activities: swimming, canoeing, wind surfing and water skiing. Thank you. Staff Bruce was very accommodating and Debbie was very helpful.
We had a wonderful 6 night stay ! The sites are large and clean. Main shower area was fantastic with solar power !
No Power at sites . So some of the generators are running until 10 at night.
The beach is great for kids , lots of boats at the launch ! We did a lot of hiking the nature trails .

This hike has lovely views but is challenging for anyone with weak or sore knees. Lots of rock scrambling and large up and down places. Need to take time and extra care with intentional foot placement.

This is were we got the best view of the Aurora.
The lake was frozen, it was night time so didn't see much of the lake and it was -46.
But the view of the Aurora at midnight was amazing.

There is no gate and no security so vehicles can come and go off the highway or to cabins bordering the campground 24hrs a day.
I took my family camping at prelude last weekend (weekend of June 4). There were partyers riding around on ATV's and in the back of trucks from about 11 pm until a final hurrah at 2:30 am which included blasting music and doing a drive by of each of the camping loops.
Eventually my family had to pack up and leave in the very early morning and come back the next day to get our gear.
It seems like the partyers were cabin owners which can seemingly come and go from the access road 24hrs a day. The park does not feel safe for young families.

This was the first of two hikes we did off the Ingraham Trail (which is the name of Highway #4). It was our first taste of the boreal forest and Canadian Shield and it did not disappoint. The rocky terrain, Jack Pines and various lichen were beautiful. We are young seniors and found this 2.5 km hike a bit of a workout despite our fitness. The walk is up and down over huge smooth rock, sometimes on a fairly steep incline, so if you are not fit or sure footed, you might think twice about trying it. The view of Prelude Lake is very nice. Pay attention to the blue markers to stay on the trail.

Prelude has both day use as well as regular use campsites that are great for adventurers, families, friends. There is a information booth with some snacks and friendly staff. There are some year round residents as well. Canoe rentals are available for nature lovers or fishermen can get fishing licenses. This is great place for summer fun and Aurora Viewing in winter. Been coming here for years prior to 2016 and enjoyed every minute of it. Come explore some of the north's great natural wonders.

This is a nice short walk. It goes mostly over big rocks and little bridges. When it's wet it can get a bit slippery. It's suitable for kids as well.

We rented a cabin down by the prelude lake park and it was one of the best decisions that we made in our life. Northern lights could be seen from this park no problem. Also during the day there were a number of hiking trails within the park to keep us moving. This place taught me the real definition of what rugged beauty is.

Prelude Lake is 31km from the city of Yellowknife. The campground is really nice. The view of the aurora is great from the granite formation in loop C site 5 of the campground.

My husband and I were in Yellowknife on a convention and our hosts brought us out to their cottage on Prelude Lake. We met up at Prelude Lake Territorial Park where our group were shuttled across the lake in pontoon boats rented right on site by our hosts. The area where the boats launch from has a number of docks, washroom facilities and a nice beach. Since it was the end of August, many of us were dressed in warmer clothing and yet there were people sunning and swimming at the beach! The lake is beautiful and if you have an opportunity to rent a boat and get out on the water or just go for the day to use the beach, you won't be disappointed! The scenery is beautiful and the water crystal clear.

Hello all,
Does anyone know if Prelude Lake Territorial Park has canoe or kayak rentals available?
Thanks!

Hi Chris,
I am planning to be in YN first week of FEB. Great to know that you had great views of Aurora from the Prelude lake area. Did you just wait in your car until the lights appeared? Any tips for the -40C weather?

I'm planning a travel trailer RV visit to Yellowknife in August 2017, hoping to camp at Prelude Lake park. Do you advise a necessity of reservations or will we be able to find a space without a reservation in that time frame?
Written April 7, 2017
I would advise you to get a reservation as that is the peak camping season. There is a lot of people that only camp for a couple of days and there may be some spots available during the week. Go to the camping NWT website to see the sites availability, there is also a picture of each site which may help you decide which one best suits your needs. I hope you enjoy your stay and check out the many sites that the Ingram trail has to offer.
