I booked two tours, one a city tour and the second to (hopefully) view the aurora. I did the city tour on my first morning and can heartily recommend both the tour itself and doing it as soon as you can after arriving. Mike was an absolute mine of information - he covered so much on what was a comprehensive tour, stopping when we wanted and providing real insight into the history of Yellowknife with lots of snippets I doubt you'll find anywhere else in one place! It was a thoroughly engaging and interesting couple of hours and well worth the time.
I'd had the good fortune to spend two days with Sean Norman (seperate review) who provides a Northern Lights 'chase' so it was a welcome rest to join Margaret and Bill at a lakeside cabin, warm and snug for when the lights were being their elusive self and a quick walk outside onto a frozen lake when they appeared. Its such a beautiful and peaceful setting, perfectly quiet and just mesmerising to stand and watch the most amazing phenomena. Bill provided valued guidance on camera techniques and without sounding like an advert, I can recommend his book 'Aurora Up' that id bought in advance to build excitement before my trip.
MBT clearly put a great deal of effort into making sure that their tours have that little something extra and shoudl definitely be on your shortlist.

We booked a city tour and rented winter clothes for 5 days and were extremely happy with everything. Margaret and Amanda (mother and daughter team) were extremely helpful with everything, from the very first time I contacted them via email with a million questions to the last day when we returned the clothes. The communication was great from A to Z. Amanda delivered our clothes to our hotel and spent a great deal of time with us making sure everything was perfect and comfortable. Amanda was extremely accommodating and prompt. The clothes and boots are top quality. This is A+ service. We were very impressed and would highly recommend anyone staying in Yellowknife for a few days to rent their winter clothes from them. As for the city tour, that was excellent. Our guide Laurie tailored our tour to what we wanted to do and see. She was also very accommodating. She made this tour very personal and we felt we were visiting family while she was taking us around to discover Yellowknife. It was the best tour, ever! Thank you Laurie!! Having a personal tour like this for just the two of us was such a treat and so much better than being bussed around with a big group. We would highly recommend taking a city tour with My Backyard Tours.

Amanda is brilliant! She responds promptly to communication, is clear about costs and options.
We rented winter clothing from them (much needed here in the winter months) and she came back not one extra time, but two after we needed a size up in boots for my husband and a roomier jacket for me. She came with a smile on her face and a friendliness that made the whole experience a pleasure.
We would absolutely use My Backyard Tours again. Thank you!

The group of young ladies that look after the business are wonderful: very serious, accommodating, reliable and helpful.
They helped us In our last day in Yellowknife finding for us an Aurora viewing tour in a matter of minutes. The tour we hired for our last day cancelled on us at 4:45 pm. I called many known tour operators and because we were a big group, nobody could accommodate us in such short notice. I called My Backyard Tours to find out if they had an Aurora Viewing tour. They did not have it, but she told me that she was going to find me something, to stay put. At that point I thought we were going to stay in the hotel on our last night. She called me back In 30 minutes, she had convinced an operator to take us that same night with a couple of hours notice. We were a group of 10 people. I am very grateful!

We booked two nights of aurora viewing, a city tour, and winter clothing with My Backyard Tours. Amanda and Margaret from My Backyard Tours were attentive, professional and custom-oriented. We enjoyed our stay in Yellowknife thoroughly. The highlight was the two nights of aurora view where we had clear night skies, and great aurora activities. The cabin by the lakeside was such an outstanding setup with the home-baked cookies, the hot drinks and the slide show, and the proximity to the frozen lake.

Rented Winter Clothing for 2 weeks of Winter Training. This is a great family owned business that is run by Amanda and her mother, we had a large group that rented from her and they were able to handle all of our different sizes and requests. They were also able to meet us for pickup and drop off at our hotel location which was super convenient. Highly recommend if you are in need of winter clothing for a variety of activities (northern light viewing, snowmobiling, winter camping).

Amanda and Margaret were wonderful! Our Yellowknife adventure had been on the Bucket List for the past 3 years. From ordering to returning our clothing everything was unbelievably easy. Amanda delivered our clothing to our Airbnb to insure everything fit properly for everyone in our group. We were never remotely cold, and we definitely spent more time outside than inside during the week. Amanda was extremely helpful, providing recommendations and advising us thorough our week to insure we had a spectacular time. Our Yellowknife City Tour provided us with an overview of Yellowknife that included hot tea and cookies during a rest stop on the Ice Road. A trip to Yellowknife is definitely back on our bucket list. And we know Amanda and Margaret know how to keep us warm. We have My Backyard Tours number!

This was a once in a lifetime experience! I wasn't sure how things would go as my timing was off-season. The team at My Backyard was amazing and I saw, learned and experienced so much. Bill was a wealth of knowledge, Amanda brought her beautiful energy and Jessica even made homemade pastry. I left feeling grateful, inspired and renewed AND with stunning pictures i will cherish forever.

My friend and I visited Yellowknife in March of 2023. We rented winter gear from My Backyard Tours and also joined them on a tour, for a night at their cabin to see the northern lights. Though the weather the night of our tour was uncooperative and we didn't get to see the northern lights that night, we had a wonderful time at the cabin with Margaret, Amanda and two other guests. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable, warm, and well-fed. Margaret baked a variety of yummy treats for the night and even made a special dessert for my friend's birthday. It was a fabulous and memorable night despite the lack of aurora, thanks to Amanda and Margaret.
On our first day in Yellowknife, when we needed to exchange our boots for a larger pair, Amanda came over immediately. She spent a lot of time showing us the best places to see the northern lights and giving us tips and information about local restaurants and attractions. She spent time answering all of our questions and helping us plan how to best use our time.
I HIGHLY recommend My Backyard Tours! Margaret and Amanda will treat you like family and will make sure your experience is a memorable one. Would definitely choose them again if I'm back in Yellowknife!!

We would highly recommend taking the city tour with My Backyard Tours. This was our first full day in Yellowknife and Mike, our guide gave us a wonderful intro to the city and surrounding area. Having lived here for many years, Mike was a great ambassador for the city. He took us to see so many different things all the while telling us stories of the history of the area.

Hello. Thank you very much for your email and interest in our tours. Wonderful news that you are coming to Yellowknife. Regretfully we do not offer tours in Spanish. There is another tourism operator in Yellowknife who might be able to provide this service. Please email me and I can send you this companies contact info. November is typically known to be cloudier as things start to freeze up here. Saying that there can still be nights with some good aurora, but if possible, I would suggest you might want to consider coming another month. There are more "other things" to do in Yellowknife once we have winter. Please check out our website and Facebook pages as we have a lot of our information there and send me an email. Everyone we asked said that December to March is the ideal time. We were told that if you stay for 3 nights, you will most likely see it at least in one of those nights. We were there for 4 nights and we saw it in 3 of those 4 nights.

If you book a tour with Margaret you won't regret. We booked tours with 3 different companies. This our favorite aurora tour by far. They had the best refund and cancellation policy.
