Host Alan Melanson takes visitors on a candlelit journey through one of the oldest cemeteries in Canada and educates them on the history of Annapolis Royal and Fort Anne while entertaining visitors with the stories of some of the people whose names are inscribed on the tombstones and grave markers, including the oldest tombstone in Nova Scotia that dates back to 1720.

Mr. Melanson has been hosting this tour for 20 years, and it shows. He is extremely knowledgeable and very entertaining and had our entire group captivated with his stories.

This tour is a definite must-see for anyone visiting the Annapolis Valley.

Alan, the tour leader, is the very knowledgeable and enthusiastic past president of the local historic society. The ridiculously small fee for this 90+ minute tour (C$10= US$7.5) is donated to the society and he frequently points out items on the walk that monies have paid for.
Alan is bright, passionate and speaks like an actor. All 16 of the folks who showed up that night- it is THE thing to do in this charming town at night- seemed to have a great time schlepping with candle lanterns in a cemetery in the dark.

We have been on four ghost tours now and this was one of the best. Alan, the local historian, has been doing this tour for many years and he keeps things moving and interesting. He shares his knowledge of the area and the cemetery in a way that captivates his audience. It's not scary for the young and just edgy enough for the grown ups. Do not pass up this adventure because other ghost tours you have been on went sour. This is the real deal!

The tour guide, also a native, dresses up in ear appropraite attire and hands out candle lanterns for the tour, which is about an hour long and not spooky at all. Very kid friendly. Its a short history lesson about the city and some of the patrons in it at the beginning of its time. Highly recommend, but definitly wear bug spray!

Myself and my family thoroughly enjoyed this tour, even my 3 year old. Its not scary, its just a fun fact filled tour of the graveyard and the history of annapolis royal. Alan was great, such a nice man, even remembered us the next day at the farmers market. He was full of information and he really knows his history. Thanks for a great memorable evening, highly recommended!

Travelling to Nova Scotia our teen requested a Ghost Tour night. We were staying 10 mins from Annapolis Valley and found this tour. We loved it. The lanterns, our guide and the history made it an amazing evening. Definitely worth visiting!

Your graveyard tour guide Alan Melanson is a local treasure who has conducted these tours for many years as a member of the historical association. It's not a ghost tour; Alan tells the stories of several of the resident graveyard occupants in such a unique manner through his delivery of levity, sincerity, and respect. Above all it's about the rich history of the region and its occupants. As you assemble, each person gets a candlelight lantern to guide you through the cemetery. We toured on a recent cool and clear October night, a perfect night for a graveyard tour. Hopefully he tells you about the moose nose soup! Alan downs a traditional graveyard garb to enhance his appearance and story telling. Cash only! We bought his post card at the end as a memento. All proceeds go to the historical association. Wonderful, You gain an appreciation for how cemeteries talk to us about the preservation of history.

This tour is a MUST. For an amazingly nominal fee, you get to experience the history of Annapolis Royal through the people who lived and died there. The Candlelight Graveyard Tour is not scarey - it is presented by Alan Melanson who is a 10th generation Acadian. Dressed in period costume, he provides each tour guest with a candle lit lantern as he guides them through the cemetery. Since we had visited the habitation during the day, each persons history came to life with Alan's story telling. You HAVE to attend this tour if visiting Annapolis Royal

We really enjoyed this unusual tour. The costumed guide (unfortunately I missed his name) is himself an Acadian with long family roots in Annapolis and an excellent way of explaining the history of the town while weaving in the stories of the occupants of the graveyard and the adjacent fort. He knows his subject very well and explains it with humour and compassion for the people of the time.We learnt a lot about Acadian life and death...I wish all history lessons were as fascinating.
The tour started at 9.30 pm and everyone was given a candle-lantern. I liked that the guide took so much care to make sure that all members of the group were safe and waited for everyone to catch-up before starting on a new topic.

An interesting tour of the cemetery by candlelight but a little over crowded with 50+ people on the walk. Definitely an informative tour but if you are looking for a "ghost" tour this is not for you.
