We were going on a cruise that had a stop in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I never take the ship's large-group shore excursions, instead opting for a small-group tour with a highly rated local guide or tour company. My research led me to Halifax Tour Guys, which was very highly rated on Trip Advisor.
I emailed them and Lem Smith, the owner, answered right away. I also spoke to Lem on the phone several times. He was very responsive to my numerous inquiries, made many helpful suggestions, and was willing to customize our tour to fit our available time off the ship and include sites that would interest us the most.
Lem has several guides working for him, but we were lucky to have Lem as our guide for the day. He was as knowledgeable about the history of the area as a college professor. On our drive from the ship, he conveyed the detailed history of the island from the early settlers, control of the area by the British and French through the years, and the economic changes that have occurred over the years.
We took the tour to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lunenberg, a town founded in 1753. Lem took us to some locations where we could get some photos with unique perspectives of the town and then drove us through the town pointing out many historic buildings and sharing some stories about many of the buildings and their earlier inhabitants.
Lem took us to a local restaurant on the waterfront near Mahone Bay (up the coast from Lunenberg) where we had a delicious lunch.
We continued to drive through several pretty coastal towns on our way back to Halifax. When we arrived in Halifax, Lem gave a tour of the city, including the Citadel and the Fairview Lawn Cemetery, where some of the Titanic victims are buried.
I highly recommend Halifax Tour Guys for a top-notch tour experience. You won't be disappointed.

Just returned from a cruise to Halifax on board the Norwegian Breakaway. Al was right there waiting as we disembarked and he was easy to spot with the pink sign. We toured around the city of Halifax, visited the Citadel in time for the cannon blast, Titanic cemetery, Peggy’s Cove, and saw many other interesting sites along the way. Al is so friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed his stories along the way. Do yourself a favor and book this tour. It was so much better than a crowded tour bus off the ship that offers little time at each stop. Thanks Al!! We will remember you.

Al was our driver and tour guide while in Halifax. He was so knowledgeable and interesting. He took us to Citadel Hill, the Fairview Lawn Cemetery (Titanic), and then to Peggy’s Cove. He also took us to a great restaurant where we had the best seafood chowder and lobster sandwiches. We also stopped by a place where a man told us all about lobsters! Al was very personable and we enjoyed our day with him so much!

The best tour guide ever, Lem was so knowledgeable and friendly. Booked a private tour for 12hours to see as much possible and Lems history of the different areas made it amazing. Took us places we didnt even think of along with all we did want. We were all amazed with our tour and can't recommend them enough. Thanks again Lem

Lem was an amazing. From the minute he came to pick me up he gave a detailed history of how Nova Scotia came to be settled. This was a private tour and different you would get from going on a big bus tours. This company likes to point out and promote and support the small local businesses in the area. Even just drive itself between stops is food for the soul. I wouldn’t hesitate to book with this company when coming back to Halifax. If you want to see something different this tour is definitely an amazing choice.
Also, important to point out that this tour company will do airport pickup and drop offs as well.

Lem Smith from Halifax Tour Guys was our driver for the day. He arrived early to meet us at the cruise terminal and drove us to Peggy's Cove. Along the way, he gave us a brief history of Halifax and Peggy's Cove. He answered any questions we had and was very professional! He gave us a couple of hours to spend around Peggy's Cove, then picked us up when we were ready to go. He got us back to our cruise ship in good time and thanked us for touring with him! We highly recommend his services and hope you all have a wonderful experience like we did touring Peggy's Cove!

Lunenburg is a beautiful coastal town and you could spend more hours there than your day tour schedule will allow. The return back to Halifax along the coastal road is just outstanding. Just a stop here and there to take in the views, the obligatory photos, have lunch. Fabulous. The 7 hour tour goes quickly but a collection of memories stored for ever
Thank you Lem for a safe drive, your knowledge of the area and your historical knowledge.

We had a private tour with Terry Jesty while visiting Halifax and what a fun, interesting day we had. Terry was so nice and knowledgeable and was easy to spot with his pink sign as we exited our cruise ship. We visited the Public Gardens, Citadel, the Titantic cemetery and Peggy’s Cove along with many other stops along the way. It was a perfect day in Halifax!

Lem gave us a fantastic tour of Halifax and Peggy's Cover, filled with knowledge and great stories. We were able to go at the pace we wanted and get out when we wanted to. We raved about the tour to the jealousy of everyone we spoke to back on board the ship! Would recommend to anyone visiting Halifax

Doug our tour guide was very knowledgeable. He took us to the cemetery where some of the passengers from the Titanic are buried. He spoke about some of the passengers that were on the Titanic. He took us to Peggy's Cove and we walked around a beautiful fishing village with lots of interesting shops. Doug took us to a local restaurant where we had lunch. I had a lobster roll and it was fantastic. My husband and I wish we could have had longer in Halifax. He dropped us back to our ship at Pier 21. We looked around the Pier (which is also a museum). We found out information on our ancestors that had arrived in Canada. It was extremely interesting.

We will be on a Cruise (4 Adults & 3 Children). Will there be anything within walking distance from the Cruise Port to do &/Or See ?

Yes there is plenty of tings to see and do within walking distance from the Cruise Piers. There is our immigration centre at Pier 21, the boardwalk that goes along our harbour front.
There are many restaurants, pubs, micro breweries and a distillery. For children there is the Discovery Center, Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, Old town Clock and Citedal Hill.
If you enjoy gardens, our Public Gardens are one of two remaining Victorian style gardens left in North America. It is a sixteen acre park filled with trees, plants flowers and shrubs from all over the world.
Thank you for your email and enjoy your time in Halifax.

Where did you book your private tour to Peggy cove and how much? Did the tour guide pick you up at the cruise terminal ?
Written March 26, 2019
We booked directly through them on line. I don’t remember the cost but it was much cheaper than anything you’ll get on the ship. We were picked up at the cruise ship terminall. Honestly one of the best tours of our cruise

There will be eight of us coming to Halifax on September 7th. Our ship docks at 7:00 am and departs at 2:00pm. We would like a tour of Halifax for approximately four hours. Please advise if there is a tour guide who can accommodate us. Thank you. Jan Fischr

We had a Coast Line Drive plus Peggy's Cove tour with Halifax Tour Guys. We were met at the cruise terminal. The charge was CAD60/hour/vehicle and the tour lasted 5 hours. The van can accommodate 6 persons. Have a nice trip.

Hi , There are two of us arriving on the Norwegian Gem on 9th October. We would like to do a trip to Chesters, Lunenburg , Mahone etc. Do you have any other people interested who could share the cost of the van. Can't afford to take the risk of booking it and having to pay full cost.
Thanks, Pam

What is the name and number of this taxi tours and does it leave earlier in the day? The Princess Cruise Ship offers a tour but is only available at 330p the day we are in port so we would miss dinner. From reading Trip Advisor reviews it sounds like you do not have enough time to visit the sites as you are rushed with a group of 40 on a bus tour. Is this tour on a small bus or car? Any suggestions from anyone would be helpful. I don't want to be late for the ship getting back. Thank you.
