We arrived in Halifax on October 25, 2019 aboard the Serenade of the Seas - as promised, our driver/guide, Lem was waiting onshore. I'm an amature genealogist of Acadian heritage and was so looking forward to this tour. It did not disappoint! The commentary was excellent -- I learned so much. We made all the stops advertised on this 6+ hour tour, and several unplanned ones based on my personal interest. Lem even brought us to the "birthplace of hockey" after I mentioned that my grandsons are hockey players. Maybe a little pricey, but...you get what you pay for...so worth it.

Great day with Terry Jesty - thank you :) Our 6 hour tour included everything we wished to see, including a very pretty drive out to Peggy's Cove, Fairview Lawn Cemetery, Citadel, drive around Halifax and a stroll through the Public Gardens (which was optional), and also a stop at Acadian Maple Products (great free tastings, an ideal stop for very reasonably priced presents for folk back at home, and a great presentation about the production of maple syrup). It was very easy to find Terry just outside the cruise terminal for the beginning of our tour, and he gave us a lovely introduction about him and the day ahead. Throughout the tour, Terry was excellent at providing all sorts of information and historical facts. This is a great way to see Halifax and the surrounding areas with someone who 'gets to know you and your interests' and get off the tourist-beaten track. Terry was also great at avoiding the crowds, especially at Peggy's Cove :), and great at finding perfect places to take some good photos. The vehicle was clean and comfortable and Terry was prepared with a plan for the day, water etc.. Would have no hesitation in using Halifax Tour Guys again nor recommending them. Thank you!

One thing important to know about Halifax Tour Guys, is that they try to match your interests to your guide, whenever possible. So if your particular interest is photography for example, be sure to let them know so you can have as personalized an experience as possible. My husband is a historian, so we requested a guide with a strong knowledge of both local and world history. We were fortunate enough to have Lem, one of the owners of the company. To say that Halifax is a city with a past, would be a great understatement. We began our 7 hour tour with Lem with a drive through the city. Halifax is a city of beautiful, eclectic architecture. The Victorian homes reminded us of San Francisco, except they were freestanding. Each home we viewed had a fascinating story to tell. We continued on to the replica of an Africaville Baptist Church, now a museum, which relays the story of the settlement of former slaves who escaped to Halifax through the Underground Railroad. The Titanic cemetery was a sober reminder of the tragedy that occurred in April of 1912. When the ship hit an iceberg south of Newfoundland, the men of Halifax were called into action to search for victims. They were faced with the grim task of recovering and identifying bodies. Of the 330 they recovered, 15O are buried here. Lem told us stories about some of the victims, that I will never forget. We could have spent the entire day in Halifax, but wanted to see Peggy's Cove. The drive there was beautiful, filled with the colors of autumn, as Lem continued to regale with stories about the area. When we arrived at Peggy's Cove, we were greeted by the sound of bagpipes. Peggy's Cove and the lighthouse were absolutely stunning, but, as we had predicted, very crowded. The cove reminded us of our beautiful California coastline - the buildings the the held the restroom and gift shop were very much like touristy Fisherman's wharf. Lem gave us some time to take pictures, and buy lobster rolls. (We had talked earlier about perhaps stopping at a restauranteur lunch, but had simply run out of time. And in hindsight, this was the right decision, because we would far rather have had more time on tour, than eating in a restaurant.) The drive from Peggy's Cove back to the cruise terminal was about 1/2 hr to 45 minutes. Time flew, however, as we basked in the beauty of the passing scenery, and our conversations with Lem. He is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge, but more than that, a very interesting person to get to know. Halifax was one port where we considered not booking tours, but we are so glad that we did. We have found that booking private tours with locals, gives us an experience and insight into the local community, that we could not get on our own, or on a large bus tour. If we return to Halifax, we would not hesitate to book another tour with Halifax Tour guys.
