The Harbor Ferry is a no brainer if you have a couple of hours to spare. For less than $3 Canadian, you can ride across the bay to the compact neighborhood of Dartmouth; if you keep the transfer you receive when you enter, you can use it for the return within a couple of hours. Such an inexpensive way to see the city's skyline from the water and get access to another neighborhood. The ride is smooth and the ferry operates continuously in a very efficient, no fuss manner. Access the ferry terminal from the harbor waterfront boardwalk, just north of the Maritime Museum.

The Halifax has 2 terminals in Dartmouth. The Alderney ferry leaves every 15 minutes on both sides for the 10 minute trip 2.75 CAD and 2.00 CAD for seniors. Price includes a transfer for return trip on short stays. The other Dartmouth terminal is Woodside which is about every half hour. The Ferries are very quick and efficient and leave promptly. Lots of seating.

An enjoyable way to visit Dartmouth without having to bother with parking. The Ferry runs very frequently during the day and evening with crossing taking approximately 15 minutes. The cost is reasonable at $2.75/adult and $2/senior one-way. Be aware that payment is EXACT CHANGE ONLY (no credit cards). There are change machines available in the terminals.

If you're looking to visit Dartmouth from downtown Halifax, taking the ferry is a fantastic way to go. The ferry ride between Halifax and Alderney (Dartmouth) takes just about 10 minutes and is super affordable at only CAD 2.75 for a round trip. Just a heads up, though - the payment system is a bit old school, so make sure to have the exact cash on hand.
It's truly a wonderful experience to take in the amazing views of the vast ocean and the beautiful Halifax waterfront during the ride. I highly recommend it!

What a great way to view the Halifax harbour! Unfortunately for us it was very foggy the day we went, but still an easy cheap way to get a view of Halifax from the water. You need exact change--$2.75 Canadian. Ask for a return voucher and hop on. We had a great lunch at a creperie in Dartmouth, too rainy to explore more than that.

We took the ferry over to Dartsmouth for Evan's seafood. The ferry was inexpensive, $2.75 per adult. Ensure you have correct change, however, if you are traveling in a group, you can pay together. There is a 2 hour transfer so if you are done with Dartsmouth within 2 hours, you can use the transfer and ride back to Halifax.

On a warm summer evening(after the sun has set), take the ferry from Halifax to Dartmouth to view the light of the Halifax skyline. Make sure you get a transfer when you pay your fare, for the return trip back to Halifax. A fantastic view for s tiny amount.

For an afternoon's enjoyment I boarded the Halifax ferry, in Halifax, and took my mini-cruise over to Dartmouth. The view from the ferry was fabulous and the fresh air invigorating. From there I bought a coup of tea and took my picnic lunch over to Ferry Terminal Park next to the Alderney Landing Ferry terminal. There I had a delightful picnic lunch, sitting on a bench beside the waterfront watching the ferries and other boats pass by and took in the view of the Halifax waterfront. Thereafter, I returned on the ferry to Halifax after having a most enjoyable and relaxing afternoon. The staff at both ferry terminals were very friendly and hospitable, the ferries, themselves, were spotless and the ride very affordable - a most enjoyable "voyage".

Halifax is on 1 side of the harbour and Dartmouth the other.
Driving across one of the two bridges or going via Bedford Hwy is long and often backed up during rush hour.
The ferry is cheap and takes about 10 minutes...you cant beat it.
You can sit inside in cold weather or up on deck during good weather.
.
My kids looked forward to taking the ferry to Halifax and spending the day on the waterfront, every summer.Such a treat!

I take the ferry on a fairly regular basis, both to Alderney Landing and to Woodside. I am a senior so the fare for me is a toonie, the regular adult fare is $2.75. It is a great way to see both skylines, Halifax and Dartmouth, especially if you ride on top. There is always shipping and pleasure boats on the move. You get a nice view of HMCS Dockyard and any RCN ships in port. It only takes about 10 minutes for the crossing, so if you get a transfer when you pay, you can explore for about an hour, then use the transfer to ride back, so you are only paying one way. If you don't want to take the ferry, the transfer works on the buses also. In the summer it is a nice way to decide if you want to see more.

Are there accessible parking spots available at the woodside ferry terminal?
Written July 13, 2024
I hope someone can help me!!
I’m cruising from Boston to Nova Scotia, P.E.I.and Quebec. I’ve been told that if I’ve had a DUI or drug charge that I could be denied entry into these ports. My DUI and drug (possession of less than 1 oz of marijuana) charges were from 2003. Over 20 years ago. Will I be denied entry?

We shall arrive on 13/9 after having completed NW Passage and would like to spend 2 or 3 nights in Halifax in a central location suitable for walking around town and catching bus tours before flying off to Europe. Can u recommend 1 or 2 suitable hotels. Holiday Inn pricing normally fits us. Thanks. Gc
Written January 8, 2020
There are at least 10 hotels right downtown. Most are with the Marriott chain but different amenities and prices. No Holiday Inn downtown but a few blocks away the former HI is an Atlantica which is probably still at the HI price point because it’s not downtown. The map should help showing its location in terms of the others.

Can one park a 28ft class C RV in the Dartmouth ferry parking lot?
Written August 26, 2019
Unfortunately not as the Dartmouth terminal is right in the down town area and parking (for anything) is hard to find. However the Woodside terminal has a mall about a block away with a good parking lot.

Hi,
How safe is it to park in and around the Alderney Ferry Terminal in Dartmouth
Written February 5, 2019
well, I live in Toronto, and when you are in Halifax people driving come to a full stop in order to let pedestrians cross the road, so I think it is safe like any other place to park. Enjoy, relax
